Bottle, Sheldrick Pale Ale, Early 20th Century
Walter Sheldrick, a butcher and publican, established the Warrnambool New Brewery at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets in 1868 as a company. The business was known as Sheldrick and Co. and after Walter Sheldrick’s death his son, Richard, managed the company until his death in 1893. In 1894 the business was sold to John McGee and Company until this firm sold to the Ballarat, Melbourne, Co-operative and Carlton and United Breweries in 1922. This Pale Ale bottle, therefore, was bottled before 1922.This bottle is of considerable significance as it is one of the last products of a prominent brewery in Warrnambool and is now nearly 100 years oldThis is a brown-coloured glass beer bottle with a long neck and no stopperOn oval shaped paper label ‘Sparkling Pale Ale, Sheldrick and Co. Personal Effects, wash bowl and water jug, 20thC
A washstand was a standard piece of furniture in many Victorian bedrooms. On it stood a jug of cold water, a bowl, and a clean rag. The person washed first thing in the morning, immediately after rising. Most bedrooms were cold, chilly places, especially as the sash windows were kept open at the top and bottom (regardless of weather) to allow good ventilation and reduce the risk of illness. This meant in winter most people kept their nightclothes and worked on one part of their body at a time. The art of a stand-up wash was to pour water into the bowl. The soaked flannel was then rubbed on each part of the body, and rinsed. Once the water became too soiled it was discarded into the slop bucket and more water poured into the bowl. Working methodically, all of the body was cleaned, with each part being scrubbed and dried before moving onto the next bit. This wash bowl and jug are typical of the equipment used for personal bathing 19thC and early 20thCA large bowl and jug used in the bedroom for personal hygiene 19thC personal hygiene, water pitchers, jugs, bowls, porcelain, moorabbin, bentleigh, cheltenham -

Postcard, Troops camped at the Pyramids, Egypt, 1915
This postcard was sent by "O.G." to J. Gawler on 7 February 1915 from an Army camp in Egypt. The postcard appears to have been hung up by a thumb tack as there is a small hole at the top centre of the card. This item is representative of the letters and postcards that were sent home to war by servicemen during the First World War and was a way to maintain a connection to their loved ones during difficult and uncertain times. Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. This postcard also records places for those who didn't have cameras. This type of souvenir would have been familiar to the first Legatees as they had served in World War 1 and many had passed through Egypt. The front image of the postcard is a photograph of a camp of white canvas tents lined up in rows in front of a pyramid. Several soldiers can be seen walking throughout the campsite. On the reverse is a message written in black ink. There is also a small hole in the top centre of the postcard.Message on reverse of postcard is dated 7.2.15 and says: "This is a view of part of Mena camp where the 1st Australian Division has been camped. We have had fine weather and very cold nights. Weigh nearly 11 stone now. O.G." Addressed to: "Mr J M Gawler, Collins St, Melbourne"world war one, war correspondence, souvenir -

Rolling pin, Glass rolling pin, Early to Mid 20th century
Rolling pins have been found to have existed in several early civilizations and glass pins were especially popular in the first half of the 20th century. They were mostly filled with very cold water or ice when pastry dough was being rolled but sometimes they were filled with hot water, depending on the food preparation being rolled. They could still be found in some kitchens today. This item is retained as a reminder of a household item that was used in the past but may still be of use today. This is a clear glass cylindrical object with two glass handles at each end. One end is enclosed and the other is open and this end would have originally had a stopper of some kind, probably a cork. The letter ‘M’ is embedded into the enclosed end. ‘M’household items, history of warrnambool -

Bottle, H O Wilkinson Chemist, Early 20th century
This bottle was used in the pharmacy business of H.O.Wilkinson. He had a chemist’s shop in Liebig Street, Warrnambool (number 119 Liebig Street today) early in the 20th century. The dates found for this business are from 1906 to 1914. Wilkinson also had pharmacies in Melbourne and Maryborough. His cough mixture, Wilkinson’s Pectorine, selling at two shillings and sixpence a bottle, was advertised as ‘the finest preparation for the cure of stubborn coughs and colds’. This bottle is of considerable interest as it is one of the few items in our collection associated with an early 20th century Warrnambool chemist, H.O.Wilkinson. This is a clear glass bottle with a rectangular body with curved edges, a circular-shaped neck and a moulded circular top. The stopper is made of cork. This glass has been purchased by a visitor to Warrnambool as a utilitarian souvenir of the visit. Tourism has been an important business in Warrnambool for over100 years. Today the visitors come in winter to see the Southern Right whales at Logans Beach and other coastal areas and in summer they come for a beach holiday. This glass is retained as an example of the mid 20th century tourist souvenirs obtainable in Warrnambool. This is a small glass tumbler, oval-shaped. Rug, Possum skin rug, early twentieth century
For the First Peoples of south-eastern Australia, making possum skin cloaks has long been a culturally important practice. But during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, possums and other native animals were also heavily hunted by white colonists who coveted their warm and fashionable furs. This rug, made from fifteen possum pelts, was used in a Brighton home during cold winter months in the 1920s.Possum skin rug made from 15 rectangular cut pelts mounted onto a brown wool felt with cut scalloped edges. possum skin, rug, fur, 1920s -

Ruler, G T Le Couteur Chemist x 2, Early 20th century
These rulers have been distributed by the Warrnambool chemist, George Le Couteur as advertising tools for his business. George Le Couteur operated a pharmacy at 78 Liebig Street, Warrnambool from 1896 to 1908. Born in Warrnambool in 1856 Le Couteur was educated at the Anglican-sponsored Warrnambool Common School No. 691 and then spent four years at Beechworth Grammar School. He was apprenticed to the Warrnambool chemist, Michael Ryan and then worked as a chemist in Kyneton and Melbourne. When he returned to Warrnambool he took over the business of Frank Uren in Liebig Street, building a second storey on to the building. He was very active in community affairs in Warrnambool. He left Warrnambool in 1908 to open a pharmacy in Hawthorn, Melbourne. When he retired in 1935 he was the oldest registered chemist in Victoria. The information hand printed on the back of one of the rulers has an historical inaccuracy in that J.A. Bromfield was not the first known chemist in Warrnambool. These rulers are of interest because of their connection to the pharmacy business of George Le Couteur He was a prominent person in Warrnambool in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These two oblong wooden rulers have imperial measurements ( to 12 inches). There is black printing on both sides advertising a Warrnambool chemist. One ruler is much stained and has a piece missing on the centre top edge. The other ruler has information on one side hand printed in black ink.‘With compliments of G.T. The Otways area of Victoria, at the time of writing, was an underused area for bushwalking. In the past, people have considered these ranges unsuited for walking because of the thick forest cover, cold and muddy conditions for much of the year, and the steep slopes. Some of the perceived difficulties are actually attractions and that it is possible to enjoy them with a forward planning and up-to-date information to guide the walker. The Geelong Bushwalking Club have included some useful but brief articles on basic aspects of bushwalking.Walking the Otways.
