The district of Strathfieldsaye was proclaimed in 1861 and named a Shire on the 17th September in 1866. It remained a shire until amalgamation in 1994 when it became part of the City of Greater Bendigo. The shire was located 8 km to the south- east of Bendigo and covered an area of 601 square kilometres and extended from the Calder Highway to the Coliban and Campaspe Rivers. The pair of photographs of Mr Henry and Mrs Mary Jane Giles was made by the International Art Company, the price was 30 shillings and the choice of frame was Rosewood. It is part of the Giles Collection, which also includes a photograph of the couple's daughter Christina Giles, who died in 1899 aged seven years. There are many 19th century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by, Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with Warrnambool and the Giles Family history. Items donated by the family have come to be known as the “Giles Collection”. Many items in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage were donated by Vera and Aurelin Giles and mostly came from the home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton) who married in 1880 and whose photos are on display in the parlour. Henry was born at Tower Hill in 1858, and was a labourer on the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater before leaving in 1895 for around seven years to build bridges in NSW. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook and she attended Mailor’s Flat State School and where she eventually was to become a student teacher. After which she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, had once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family consisted of six, some of the children were born at Mailor’s Flat and later some children at Wangoom. They lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, and this is where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940.This photograph is locally significant due to its association with a local pioneering family. The Giles family collection is of social significance at a local level, because it not only illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill during it’s establishment. But the Giles collection also gives us today a snapshot into what domestic life was like in early colonial times prior to Federation. The photograph itself is of added significance as we can see the faces of the family whose lives the collection represents . Ernest Leviny (1818-1905) was born in Georgenberg (Szepes-Szombat) Hungary. He went to Budapest as a youth to become an apprenticed silversmith, then travelled as a 'journeyman' across Europe living and working in Vienna and Paris between 1843-1846. He then set up business in London for six years before embarking on journey to the Australian goldfields arriving in 1853. With a lack of success mining for gold, Leviny established business as a jeweller and watchmaker in Castlemaine and between 1854 and 1862 found time to create major decorative works in gold and silver for which he is best remembered. After retiring from business in 1863 he purchased the house, Delhi Villa, married Bertha Hudson (English-born Tasmanian) in December 1864 and together they had ten children, later renaming the family home Buda (after Budapest). He died in 1905 purported to be the wealthiest gentleman in Castlemaine at that time. Two works made by Leviny are held in the collection at the National Gallery of Victoria: the Silver Standing Cup with Cover c1859 (or Saint Cup), and a Gold Bracelet with inset garnet and diamonds c1860.Albumen, sepia toned 'carte-de-visite' photograph of Ernest Leviny in 1866. Joseph Ebery was a Congregational minister, born 1858, died November 3, 1947. Ministry was as Wesleyan Home Missionary ?–1897; Congregational churches – Dover (Tas) 1897-1907; Tamar St Launceston 1907-1909; Devonport 1909-1914; Gatton (Qld) 1915-?; Redcliffe (Qld) 1921-1927; Beechworth (Vic) 1927-1930; Hughesdale 1930-1934. Was a Wesleyan lay preacher at Allandale and Woodbridge (Tas). Obituary - "… For ten years carried on an energetic evangelistic ministry, riding his horse over the roughtest roads in his scattered district, which was 25 miles long, and visiting even the southern-mosst home in the island (Tasmania)" As a Wesleyan Home Missionary he was not allowed to marry. The Congregationalists had no such restrictions so he joined the Congregational Church and married his Emily. Alexander Peacock was born in Creswick, Victoria in 1861. Upon leaving school he mined and was legal manager of mining companies in Ballarat. In 1882 he joined the Creswick branch of the Australian Natives' Association (ANA) and became branch secretary. He stood for parlimnet in March 189 and was elected to the Legislative Assembly representing Clunes and Allandale. Peacock assisted in the establishment f the Clunes Branch of the Ballarat School of MInes which opened in 1890. He was one of the Victorian delegates to teh Federal Convention in 1897. He laid the foundation stone of the new SMB Classroom building in 1899 while MInister for Public Instruction. This note has the names of British/Australian soldiers who served in WWII written in English on both sides. Five Yuan note from the Central Bank of China. David Miller (Dave) Mair (1879-1938) married Lily Vipond Deakin (1890-1945) in 1910. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Lily initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Dave walked across the gardens to work at the MCG. He never drove or owned a car. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street. Electoral roll details: 1919 1922 24 Louise Avenue, Mont Albert 1924 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert Dave Mair was a very keen sportsman. A special luncheon was held for World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached French waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. Legatee waiters included Lucky Luscombe George Woodward and John Stevenson (President in 1993). This photo was used to promote the 1993 WWI widows luncheon. W.P. Fairlam Auction Rooms was located on Charman Road, Cheltenham, Victoria. The Fairlam family were a prominent family among early settlers in the Cheltenham area. While William Percy Fairlam ran the auction rooms, his son Richard William Percy Fairlam ran a photography business next door. Surrey Hills Golf Club operated from 1892-1908 then moved and became Riversdale Golf Club. The game was played across paddocks from Trafalgar Street, Mont Albert to Whitehorse Road and down Victoria Crescent to where Box Hill TAFE is now located in Elgar Road. There were problems with cows eating the tee flags! The clubhouse still exists as 30 Trafalgar Street. The Surrey Hills Golf Club was founded by Mr Hugh W McLeod in 1894. The first president was Mr A W Harston. Mr William Meader was the first honorary secretary and the club champion for several years. Another notable identity was Mr. Harry Culliton, who contributed golf notes to "The Argus" for many years. Harry Culliton (clerk; later bank manager) married Christina Mary Rothwell of Surrey Hills in 1897. They initially live in Canterbury Road before moving to 'Bayview' in Harding Street. They had 3 sons. The eldest Kenneth Rothwell Culliton married Molly Fanny Arthur in 1940. They continued to live in 'Bayview'. Molly was a foundation member of the Surrey Hills Historical Society.The image is significant in documenting the Surrey Hills Golf Club, no longer in existence, but also members of early Surrey Hills families. Jocelyn Hall indicated in notes that the gentleman could possibly be an estate agent. This was confirmed by a grandson of the original owners. (REF: Email 1/8/2020) The original photos is thought to have been a publicity photo for the real estate agency. Carl Theodore Offszanka (1874-1944) was born in Germany. He is listed in electoral rolls at 44 Guildford Road from 1915, occupation furrier, with his wife Ida (nee Schade, 1882-1963), also born in Germany. They were married in Victoria in 1908. In later electoral rolls at the same address are Erna Helena (b 1913; d 1996) and Maria Eliese (b 1910; m Benedict Francis Rieusset in 1936). Both daughters are listed as typists. Also listed is Bernard George (b 1914; d 1987) who in later electoral rolls is described as a process worker. He served in the AIF in the Second World War. Not listed is Carl Bernard b 1909. The Offszanka family lived at 44 Guildford Road from 1913 until post-1980; they came to Surrey Hills from Richmond. Their home was called 'Westfalia' (ref: 1919 electoral roll), presumably after the region in NW Germany. It is not known when Carl and Ida migrated from Germany. This home has had a 2nd storey added to it in late 1990s. According to a family descendant (REF: Email 1/8/20 from grandson) Carl Theodor Offszanka purchased the home in 1913 for £616. He also purchased the adjoining vacant block of land at 42 Guildford Road and ran a large orchard on it before later selling it. This appears to have been between 1920-1930. The family continued to occupy the house until after 1980 when Erna Helena and Bernard George are listed in the electoral rolls. Our property register lists Erna Helena Offszanka as the last member there. She died on 5 May 1996. The Offszanka family occupied this home from its beginning for over 70 years.
