Report titled "Creation of a State Electricity Commission", and "History of Provincial tramways before Act No. 3845 - 1929". Outlines the context of the SEC Act of 1919 which did not include tramway operation by the power or electricity supply authority - was seen as a Municipal concern. Gives the alternatives that were considered, including the agreement with the Municipal Councils of Geelong, Ballarat, and Bendigo. Photograph - Black and White - cable tram alarm signalling device - set of three
Photograph shows the device used to send a "telegraph" signal to the winding or engine house. They were positioned along the track and enabled the tram crew or a cable tram worker to send a signal about the cable. The crew member would set the pointer and depress the trigger. This sent the signal which was recorded on a telegraph tape, indicating the signal and the location of an incident. Installed by the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. Certificate of Appreciation from the Mutual Benefit Society of the Employees of MTOCo to Mr T Edwin Wildie for services rendered to the Society. Dated Feb. 1914. Was signed by the President, Vice President, and secretary but these have faded. Comprises a group photograph of 28 men and at the bottom a portrait photo of Mr Wildie. Includes images of a cable tram set at Brunswick Depot, a horse-drawn Omnibus, the interior of an engine house and the construction of a cable tramway junction. Contains a copy of the agreement dated 23-8-1912 between the Australian Tramway Employees Association with the Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Company Limited, and a supplemental agreement dated 12-8-1913. In 1890 Bendigo's first tramway battery-electric carriages operated between Sanhurst and Eaglehawk. In 1892 Battery-electrics were replaced by steam tram cars on the Bendigo Railway Station track to Eaglehawk. In 1903 Electric traction overhead was inaugurated extending to Quarry Hill, Golden Square and Lake Weeroona. In 1913 Open cross-seat cars added for the service Quarry Hill to Eaglehawk. In 1945 Traction bogie cars replaced older cars. In 1947 Birney safety cars (dead man controllers) replaced older carsToast list for a Bendigo Tramways Division Retirement Dinner - A complimentary Dinner tendered to Mr Arthur Douglas on his retirement after 31 years as Secretary of The Australian Tramway and Motor Omnibus Employees' Association. The City of Melbourne issued a License or Licence for Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co (MTOCo) drivers (gripmen) or conductors under their Hackney Carriage by-law No. 110. The cost was 5/- or five schillings. This practice ceased during 1917. 1 - License No. 179, was issued to George A Barrett of Port Melbourne who was a tram conductor on the 16/1/1914. The Australian Tramway Employees Association commissioned in 1915, a banner for use in marches or events. It was painted in 1916 by George Grant with its first public appearance at the Eight-Hour Day Diamond Jubilee on 10 April 1916, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the introduction of an eight-hour working day in Victoria. The reference gives a detailed history of the banner, it significance and the background to its painting. It is now held in the collection of Museums Victoria. The ATEA was the forerunner to the Australian Tramway and Motor Omnibus Employees' Association, now part of the Rail Tram and Bus Union. Image provided by Museum's Victoria to the donor - Peter Jewell. Report prepared by the Tramway Board, the intermediate body between the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. (MTOC) and the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), examining the status of the special work (points and crossings), curves, depot entry tracks and other worn tracks for wear. This report looks at the northern half of the cable system. Prepared May 1916 with a second inspection during July 1916. Provides detailed layout drawings of each junction, crossings with other cable lines, railway tracks, curves, depot entry, and locations where cable pick up points were - a "wiggle" in the track. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Watering hole: the Queen's Arms Hotel was built by James Hamilton in Russell Street, Quarry Hill, in 1872 when Quarry Hill was sparsely populated. Within a year there was a regular omnibus service from this hotel to the centre of Sandhurst. A veranda was added later. The hotel architects were a mining engineer Robert Moffat, who spent three years in partnership with Joseph Brady in the early 1870s, meeting the needs of the mining industry. Looks at the life and work of John Garibaldi Roberts a supporter of the Arts and Chief Accountant of the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co (MTOCo) and later the manager of the cable tram system for the MMTB. He retired in 1923. Has photos of the family, John at his work desk in 1910 and the directors of the MTOCo. Item written by Caleb Cluff of The Courier. One of Roberts guests was C J Dennis, who wrote Songs of the Sentimental bloke" while staying at Roberts place in the Dandenongs which had been formed from disused horse buses.
