Photograph - colour, Clare Gervasoni, Furphy Water Cart, 2014, 01/11/2014
The water cart was in itself a complete invention of John Furphy and was first made in the 1880's. At the time no similar article was used in Australia. Few houses of the time were designed to collect rain water from the roof and hence, water needed to be collected elsewhere and transported for stock and domestic use. The method of carting water was then confined to horse drawn drays or sleds with mounted wooden barrels or casks. At the same time the growing demand for agricultural implements, led to the establishment of a foundry with a furnace to cast components rather than the time consuming task of forging. This became the catalyst for the efficient production of the robust and mobile water carrier known then, and now, as the Furphy Farm Water Cart.Four colour photographs showing a tank made by Furphy and Sons, Shepparton.furphy, shepparton, water storage -

The Victoria Tower made landfall after a voyage of 85 days from Liverpool, and headed towards the Port Phillip Heads pilot boarding ground. It had been an uneventful voyage despite some contrary headwinds (causing the long voyage) and problems with the compasses, that could not be relied upon. The weather was hazy, with gale force winds and heavy rain squalls. Reaching the pilot ground Captain Kerr fired rockets and burned blue lights to attract attention, but met with no response. Sighting the Cape Shank lighthouse he sailed towards it, then wore the Victoria Tower onto a port tack in a westerly direction. No soundings nor observations were taken, as Captain Kerr was confident he was on a safe course and knew his position tolerably well. Footwear - Child's boot, 1940s
This small shoe (or boot) was found at Rosebrook, a small settlement between Warrnambool and Port Fairy, after the 1946 Western District floods. These floods are regarded as the worst in the history of European settlement in the Western District. At least five lives were lost, many small settlements and towns were isolated resulting in food shortages, onion and potato crops were ruined, 20 bridges were destroyed or damaged, roads were swept away, hundreds of farm animals perished and road and rail services were disrupted. The floods were the result of a very high rainfall in five successive days (658 points of rain in one 24 hours) and there was more flooding a week after the first major impact of the rains. A link to a major weather event in the South west. This is a small child’s brown shoe made of leather with a lace-up upper part (no laces) and a leather sole. The sides of the upper part of the shoe have broken away at the edges. As the shoe has been water-logged (it was found after the 1946 Western District floods) it has become hard and brittle. warrnambool, rosebrook western district floods, 1946, 1940's shoe -

Photograph, R. Preston, Kawarren: an UP goods train, 1958, 14 December 1958
Kawarren was an early timber and limestone loading point. Timber was shipped in by Watson and Facey, Condon Brothers, and Coppock, amongst others, some of which had tramways up to 6.5 km long to the station. Bushfires roared through the area in 1939 and made the area unworkable. An outcrop of limestone existed near Kawarren but it was not until the railway was built that it became workable. 360 metres north of Kawarren station two then three kilns were erected, and later a shed and covered area over a short length of the rail siding in order to prevent rain damage to the lime while it was being loaded. Sluicing was introduced, and the tramway was extended further when the quarry ate deeper into the hillside. Limestone traffic of around 2,000 tonnes each year kept the station busy until the trade ceased in 1957.B/W. On the 14 December 1958 at Kawarren an UP goods train shunts on the siding. Work on paper, Alan Sumner, Preparatory Drawing for 'The Four Seasons' Window, 1985
The gouache was presented to Cr Jill O'Brien, Mayor of Kew in 1983-4, who was instrumental in the purchase of the window. The same Kewriosity article, referred to in the physical description, states that the window was originally commissioned from the artist by a Kew timber merchant, and following ownership by successive owners found its way back to Kew. The framed photograph is part of the Jill O'Brien collection which was gifted to the Kew Historical Society following her death in July 2016. The collection includes important primary sources relating to a number of areas in which Jill O'Brien made a significant contribution including the establishment of the Villa Alba Museum, local government, the Kew Historical Society, the Yarra Bend Trust, and the arts.Framed gouache on paper of the design by the artist Alan Sumner for his window, The Four Seasons. The window, now in Kew Library was purchased to commemorate Kew's 125th Anniversary. An article in a contemporary issue of Kewriosity states: The window is approximately three metres in diameter and divided into one central and four outer panels. Clockwise from the top is Autumn with sinuous lines in yellow and brown, then winter in cool blues and mauves with lines and circles suggesting rain, snow and hail. Spring follows in the bottom left quadrant with organic ovaloid shapes richly coloured and lines evoking growth. Then to the top where summer explodes with the colours of fire and blue of the sky at the height of summer. Memorabilia, Two tickets to the Children's Centenary Picnic, Victoria Park, 1934, 1934
1934 was the year that Victoria celebrated the European settlement of Victoria. Events were planned through Victoria. In Kew a children's picnic was planned. The following newspaper report records what happened: KEW CHILDREN'S PICNIC. Owing to rain the picnic which the Kew Centenary celebrations committee had arranged for children resident in the municipality, which was to have taken place at Victoria Park yesterday, had to be postponed. The organisers decided to forward to the various schools the luncheons which had been prepared for the children and hurriedly made arrangements for their entertainment at a picture theatre. Needless to say the theatre was crowded to capacity, in addition to special pictures a punch and judy show was provided and a number of aborigines who are in Melbourne for the Centenary gave, exhibitions of native dances and corroborees. The trophies for the sports events are to do competed for at a later date. I say, what about a few lines, Herb, as it's a long time since I heard from you. Had a good fruit return this season, Herb. See you've had a dose of rain this year. Hear from Fred pretty regular. Wangaratta Tin Kan Band
The Wangaratta Tin Kan Band, a significant part of local folklore, was formed mainly for the purpose of raining funds for the district hospital. The original drum was a discarded carbine tin, hence the band's name Tin Kan Band. The band was formed in 1914 by Syn Emery and was active until 1935. Music was important in this era for public and social functions. The instruments played were tin whistles, mouth organs, accordions, banjos, violins, guitars, drums, wash boards and anything that would make a musical sound; they often made their own instruments such as one string fiddles. Each band member had their own distinctive costume. The band members were mostly business men and shop owners who used their talents to entertain at public functions. They organized sports meetings, dances, concerts and anything that would help the hospital financially and in the depression of the 1930's; they were the mainstay that helped keep the hospital going. Photograph - Army Survey Regiment’s Fortuna Lions Football Club Grand Finals, Seymour, Victoria, 1983
This is a set of seven colour and black and white photographs of Army Survey Regiment’s Australian Rules football team – the Fortuna Lions aka “Fortuna Fumblers”, taken at Seymour and Bendigo Victoria in 1983. The Fortuna Lions competed in the Puckapunyal Area Football Association for several years from 1978 to 1984 and in 1983, fielded a great team it managed to reach the Grand Final. Held at the neutral ground at Kings Park, Seymour, the match was an incredibly exciting and bruising contest played in damp conditions and ended in a draw. Dave Lawler’s spectacular mark was a highlight. Due to heavy rain during the following week, the Grand Final replay was held the following week in even heavier conditions. The Fortuna Lions prevailed in the replay with an emphatic victory. The team’s leaders were Eddie Jacobs (coach), Rhys De Laine (captain), Greg Else (vice-captain), and Ken Slater (manager). Refer to items 6244.27P (black & white) and 6245.26P (colour) for other photographs taken at the two grand finals. This is a set of seven photographs of Army Survey Regiment’s Australian Rules football team – the Fortuna Lions aka “Fortuna Fumblers”, taken at Seymour Victoria in 1983.
