Grace Mitchell was probably best known for her Eltham shop at the corner of Mt Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace's memories covered many local identities who were patrons of her shop between 1954 and 1971. From the elevated position of her shop and home Grace was able to view a varied passing parade of Eltham events from ERSILAC, Easter and Eltham Festival parades passing on their way to Eltham Lower Park, circuses in Wingrove Park (then Bremner’s Reserve), roadworks and other happenings. Bremner's Reserve was renamed Wingrove Park c.1970 This photo of her daughter Jenni was from a series of images presented by Grace Mitchell at a Society talk 10 March 1993 on the theme of “My Eltham”. ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ was written and published in 1907 by Edward Vidler. It is a seminal work on Warrnambool’s history. It is noted for its historical accuracy, its complementary value to Osburne’s History of Warrnambool published in 1887 and its presentation of historically important early photographs. Edward Vidler, born in England, was a writer, historian, journalist, editor and publisher. He was in the Geelong area in the 1880s where he produced a commemorative volume on that city. He was in Warrnambool in the early 1900s where he produced his book ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. He also organized the establishment of the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board with the portraits of 204 pioneer men from the area. John Ward was a pioneer settler in the Warrnambool area. He was a Councillor (1880 to 1911) and Mayor and had a shop at the corner of Jamieson Street and Canterbury Road. He was an historian and wrote articles on aspects of early Warrnambool and a comprehensive history of Methodism in Warrnambool. Thomas Wicking was a noted Warrnambool historian in the second half of the 20th century. These two copies are most significant. Originals of this book are rare and the book is of key importance in the recording of Warrnambool’s history. This cheque book was found in a shop on the corner of Sturt and Camp Streets, Ballarat by a builder around 2004. The English, Scottish & Australian Bank Limited was founded in 1852 by Royal Charter in London as the English, Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank. The bank opened its first Australian branch in Sydney in 1853. Australian banknotes were printed by the bank and issued at branches in Sydney, Adelaide, Hobart and Melbourne. In 1893, the bank was renamed the English, Scottish & Australian Bank following the financial upheaval. The bank was one of 16 banks which supplied blank note forms to the Australian Government in 1911 which were superscribed as redeemable in gold and issued as the first Commonwealth notes. The bank took over the Commercial Bank of Tasmania Limited and the London Bank of Australia Limited in 1921 and the Royal Bank of Australia Limited in 1927. This image was one of a series taken by Harold Millane in the late 1940's. They were printed onto post cards. Mary Millane, Harold's wife, printed captions on each negative with Indian ink. This illuminated address was given to H.H.Smith, the Warrnambool Mayor, for his work with soldiers returning to Warrnambool and district during and after World War One. On the same occasion Smith was also given an armchair by the mothers, sisters and wives of Warrnambool returning soldiers. Henry Huntingdon Smith (1857-1941) started his own bakery business in 1885, firstly near the corner of Fairy and Koroit Streets and later building his own shop at the corner of Lava and Fairy Streets (Monaghans Pharmacy today). Smith was one of the most admired men in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century. He was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1918 to 1937 (Mayor for two terms) and served continuously on the Warrnambool Hospital Committee for 39 years. He visited patients at the Hospital twice a week. He took a particular interest in the welfare of returning soldiers and it was said that there was not a returned man or woman whom Smith did not greet on his return to the district. Smith also was a tireless worker for the Methodist Church as an office bearer and a Sunday School teacher. Smith was also Vice President in 1937 of the first Warrnambool & District Historical Society. This document is of particular interest as it is a good example of the type of illuminated address produced during the early years of the 20th century. It also shows clearly the respect and love that Warrnambool people had for Henry Smith, a great volunteer worker in the community. This is a piece of cream-coloured parchment paper with a margin ruled in black ink and handwriting in blue and black ink surrounded by red ornamental scrolls and flourishes. The paper has an address to H.H.Smith and is followed by 74 names and the date (1920). The paper is inserted into a piece of red leather cloth. This has folded edges and an ornamental gold pattern around the front edges and a gold border around the back edges. There are two holes at the top of the folder and these have metal surrounds. The backing folder is rounded at the top edges. ‘Warrnambool, 6th December 1919. To H.H. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) was a travelling hawker who opened a business in Liebig Street, Warrnambool in 1924. In 1931 he opened The Man's Shop at the corner of Liebig Street and Koroit Street. He sold suits and overcoats tailored in the work rooms upstairs. In 1948 his factory known as Pleasant Hill was opened in Flaxman Street in Warrnambool, the site of an old quarry. In 1951 the company Fletcher Jones and Staff was formed with the staff owning 51% of the shares, By the 1970s Fletcher Jones and Staff had become one of the largest clothing companies in Australia with 55 shops and 3000 employees. In 1992 the Warrnambool City Council bought the factory and gardens with the site now a tourist attraction. Although the name is retained today for trading purposes the original Fletcher Jones company has been dissolved. The screen is a representation of the Fletcher Jones factory post 1967. It a wool tapestry by Martin Prider who was a painter and caretaker what the Fletcher Jones factory. He lived in one of the Fletcher Jones cottages on site. (Robin Boyd Age Small Homes Scheme, today Heritage listed.)This is an interesting memento of the Fletcher Jones company and the factory. It was done by a local resident and features the famous Fletcher Jones gardensTapestry fire screen in a rectangular light timber frame depicting the Fletcher Jones Factory Gardens. The screen has two timber feet, non relective glass and appears to be a wool tapestry. The image of the gardens is after 1967 as the silver ball is included and that was erected in 1967. Dust coat worn by Mr Frederick Alister Jennings when he managed a family grocery store circa 1948 at 510 Point Nepean Road, East Brighton. Frederick was born at Nagambie, Victoria in 1909 and died in Brighton in 1979. He was the son of Hugh Edwin Jennings and Alice Constance Warren. He married Margaret Jean Hughes in 1934 and served in the Second World War. He lived at 1 Valda Grove Brighton. Frederick was a commercial traveller as well as his time spent managing the store in Point Nepean Road. It is believed this coat dates from his time at the store c1948 - 1955. The store was owned for many years by his father-in-law W. G. Hughes and was one of a group of shops near the corner of Centre Road. In 1944-45 the group of shops included Fletcher’s fuel merchants, a haberdasher, butcher, fruiterer, grocer, Brighton East post office, a ladies’ hairdresser and Hughes’ grocer. In 1950 Hughes’ grocery store was between a service station and the Commercial Bank on what had been renamed Nepean Highway. The business was sold to G. S. Archibald Crofts (1875-1942) was born in India and came to Australia in the mid 1890's. He married Mary Keene i 1899 and in 1905 opened his first grocery store in Sth Melbourne. Eventually there were 137 Crofts stores including one in Bendigo. In many cases these were the first self-serve grocery stores. Crofts was also heavily involved in the South Melbourne Football Club and was its president 1933-37. Situated at 965 Main Road adjacent to the Eltham Railway Station, the Country Art Store was originally a hairdresser and Tattersalls agency In 1968 Pam Robinson and Caroline Shenton opened a small shop on the corner of Main Road and Napoleon Street. Four months later a damaged fire hyrdant flooded the store and ruined all their stock. The pair moved to the former hardresser shop at 965 Main Road, adjacent to the Eltham Railway Station, opposite the Stationmaster's house and opened the Country Art Store and adjacent gallery. At the time the only other shop selling pottery was the Potters Cottage in Warrandyte. During the 1970s the gallery was the Wiregrass Gallery. In 1993, after 25 years operating the Country Art Store, the pair decided to sell up and move to warmer climates. During the course of their business a number of craft shops and galleries opened and closed in Eltham. One such shop was Bimbadeen, next to Ansell and Muir's chicken shop opposite Eltham Lower Park. That business run by Don Brown, then a local artist was taken over as River Clay run by Leo Haanappel and Coeny Dommers but ultimately sat in a flood plain and was demolished. When the Country Art Store became available in 1993, Leo Haanappel and Coeny Dommers took it over. The premises became Platform 3095 cafe around 2015.Old Property at Eltha Station E. Walter John Howell was born in the Buckland Valley 30.11.1871 he died in Bright 13.05.1930. Walter "Watty" ran his Blacksmith shop opposite the Alpine Hotel (corner of Anderson and Wood sts) from 1893 until his death in 1930. He was also proprietor of the Ovens Valley Coach Factory in Ireland Street, near the site of the present library, for a numberof years before World War 1. From 1893 he resided in Cobden Street (no.37) The medals were for attaching to a watch chain and were presented by his grandsons, Keith Edwards and Ron Howell (both born in Bright) in November 1994 The Medals were presented by the Bright Fire Brigade which has been a local volunteer organisation scince the C1870s The Howell family were one of the first families to settle in the Buckland Valley and many descendants live in the local area Reference to the Ovens Valley Coach WorksQuarto size ridgid card with information regarding the medal hand written in black ink. Anniversary best of eight men W. Howell 11-5-94", the reverse is blank except for a small 69.

Emma was one of the first white children born in the Barrabool Hills (Geelong) to parents Richard and Elizabeth Phillips. Emma Eliza Jane Phillips was one of the first white children born in the Barrabool Hills (South Geelong) in the Port of New South Wales on 25/04/1844 and died at "Gracedale" Yendon 12/10/1925, age 81. Emma was the daughter of Richard Price Phillips and Elizabeth Anne Goodenough. Richard, originally a coach plater, was the licensee of "The Thistle Inn", a small hotel on the corner of Corio and Yarra Streets. Elizabeth appears to have had a dressmakers shop around the corner in Yarra Street. Emma married Thomas Watson in Ballarat in 18--? Thomas William Watson was born in Harston, Cambridge, England on10/11/1838 and died at "Gracedale", Yendon, Victoria, Australia 27/04/1920, age 81. He came to Australia seeking gold but instead of finding a fortune he worked for the Victorian Railways. After living in Sebastapol and Ballarat North they settled on a small farm at Yendon named "Gracedale" They were married in Ballarat at Saint Paul's Church of England in Ballarat East. Emma sang in the choir and was a member of the Ballarat Philharmonic Society. They first lived in Sebastapol, then Crompton Street, Ballarat North before building a house at Yendon. Thomas and Emma had 10 children, five boys and five girls, also rearing 3 grandchildren. This bottle was used in the pharmacy of Sambell and Son of Warrnambool. John Sambell opened the Hall of Pharmacy in Fairy Street, Warrnambool about 1890, taking over the business previously managed by Edward Griffiths. Sambell was a chemist and dentist with previous business experience in England and Victoria. By 1919 John Sambell’s son, Herbert had joined the business, trading as Sambell and Son (though John Sambell had died in 1906) and the shop was located at 151 Fairy Street. The Sambells then built new shops on the north eastern corner of Koroit and Fairy Streets and occupied the corner position. In the late 1930s Sambells moved to 90 Fairy Street and the business became known as Sambell, Son and Granddaughter, with Herbert, the son, dying in 1943. This bottle is of considerable interest as one of the few items we have associated with the important Sambell family pharmacy business in Warrnambool. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular-shaped body with curved edges, a circular-shaped neck and a moulded circular top. The top is chipped and the inside of the bottle is a little discoloured. The name of the chemist is embossed on the front of the bottle.
