January 1869 at the first land sale in Cowes, John West bought Lot 1 for £45 . In the 1870's he built the first Chicory Kiln on Phillip Island. With his brother, Solomon, he started the General Store next to the Chicory Kiln in Thompson Avenue. This work pays homage to Solomon J. Solomon’s Ajax and Cassandra. Andrew Potter’s painting tells of the subsequent event. Cassandra is undoubtedly a Trojan War casualty, symbolizing the personal pain of widows and rape victims. The flow of the fabric is the allegory of bloodshed, while the empty jar suggests displacement of refugees. Cassandra’s body, as mother earth, is a metaphor for the peaceful landscape that is desecrated by acts of war. The artist uses these iconic figures to exemplify and demonstrate why peace is always better than war. This work was awarded second prize in the 2009 Lucato Peace Prize. During that year Andrew Potter was undertaking the first year of a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Fine Arts) at the University of Ballarat’s Arts Academy. This item was runner up in the Lucato Peace Prize, and is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Collar and hem of the garment are lined with black velvet. Sleeve hems also lined with a band of black velvet. Hock and eye fasteners provide centre closing. Twelve small, black buttons (decorative) have been sewn vertically along the centre panel from collar to hem. Boning has been inserted into both of the side seams to shape the jacket. Darts, with decorative stitching, have also been used to tailor the front of the jacket around the centre closure panels (Three darts on either side of the centre closure panels). This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. Dr Geulah Solomon's 4 volume book "Caulfield's Heritage" Vol 1 p 35 "...an elaborate double-storey spreading mansion which brought together several architectural styles to create a fairytale castle effect...". This medal was presented to the children of Victorian Wing - Warrant Officer and Non Commissioned Officers Academy Soldier who have served on operational deployments. As these young children endured an operational deployment of a parent who spent many months away from home in a foreign country representing the Australian Army. Following operations include Bougainville, East Timor, Indian Ocean, Solomon Islands, Meddle East Area, Afghanistan and Sinai.Presented by the Government to children whose parents had served overseas Silver medal with pale green, yellow, orange and deeper green ribbon. Five men in suits with high collars and bow ties pose with three ladies in evening dress. To the far left are Aaron Solomon and Annie Rose Drummond, and to the far right is John Irwin. Aaron Solomon (1870-1936) was enrolled at the RVIB school in 1878, after losing his sight at 6 years of age. He first began participating in concerts in September 1884, at an exhibition of talent that was held by the Institute and the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute, to raise awareness of their work and achievements. He then became a regular performer with the entertainment troupe and travelled around Victoria singing and playing piano, even after his discharge from the Institute in 1892. In 1894 he formed his own troop of players and toured around Victoria, Tasmania and New Zealand. This consisted of two females (Tilly Aston and Maggie Mulvogue) and three males (Charles Bartlett, John Irwin and himself). In 1896, Annie Drummond, Nellie Andrew and William Snell replaced the Aston, Mulvogue and Bartlett, and W.W. Spicer was appointed as manager with his wife acting as an assistant to the ladies of the group. In 1897-1898, H Forder replaced William Snell. On a return tour to New Zealand in late 1898, Thomas Andrews - brother to Nellie - joined the troop and Fred Hunter replaced H Forder. This was the first time the troop numbered eight people, who were also present when Annie Drummond married Aaron Solomon in Hamilton, New Zealand on Feb 3, 1899.
