This mounted and framed photograph of a group of friends punting on the River Yarra has a number of historic and artistic associations. The photograph is primarily important as an informal photograph of the Australian baritone John Donald Mackenzie Brownlee (1900-1969), whose international career at the world's major opera houses from 1927 until his retirement in 1958 included singing at Melba's Covent Garden farewell in 1926, to recordings in the 1930s of a major series of Mozart operas in Glyndebourne Festival productions, conducted by Fritz Busch. Brownlee, born in Geelong, won the gold medal as champion vocalist at the South Street competitions in Ballarat in 1921. Moving to Paris in 1923 he began study with the French baritone, Dinh Gilly, making his operatic debut at the Trianon Lyrique in Montmartre in 1926. The most significant periods of his operatic career were with the Paris Opera from 1927 to 1936, and at the Metropolitan Opera from 1937 to 1957. After his move to Paris in 1923, he is recorded as revisiting Australia in 1928 as a member of the Melba-Williamson Company, and 24 years later in 1952. The photograph of Brownlee and the Gardners in a punt on the Yarra, while putatively dated to 1925, must be from earlier in the 1920s before his move to Paris, or later during the Melba-Williamson Company season. Before his move to Paris in 1923, Brownlee had lived in Belmont Avenue, Kew, where he must have developed a friendship with the Gardners. The photograph has additional artistic significance as it was produced at 'The Artorium', James Beament's design studio next to the Hawthorn Town Hall at 362 Burwood Road. With a home at 33 Uvadale Road (designed by Eric Nicholls, who managed the architectural practice of Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Grifffin from 1924 to 1932), Beament painted a number of significant murals for the Griffin practice, including those at the Capitol Theatre in Melbourne.A photograph of recreational activities on the River Yarra. The Rockingham Red Cross Centre in Kew provided convalescence and rehabilitation for war veterans suffering nervous conditions resulting from the Second World War. The building had been given to the Australian Red Cross by the owner of the house, Mrs Syme in 1940. In the early days of the centre, patients performed plays for fellow patients and staff members. This small box of theatrical makeup, or greasepaint, would have been used at the Centre on one or more of these occasions. The donor, Rosemary Lade, worked at the Centre as an occupational therapist, 1971-2 and 1974-7. During these years, play readings were held, but performances were not staged. The Rockingham Red Cross Centre closed in 1977, and following its closure, the donor retrieved the box of greasepaints from the Occupational Therapy Department. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories.This theatre costume was made Thea Sartori for her daughter to wear in a Ruyton Girls' School theatre production. It is one of a number of items donated to the Fashion Collection by Thea Sartori, which were made by, or for four generations of her family: her grandmother Frances Ethel Winifred Jones; her mother Dorothea Fush (nee Winstanley); by Thea Sartori (nee Morris), and her daughter. 1934 was the year that Victoria celebrated the European settlement of Victoria. Events were planned through Victoria. In Kew a children's picnic was planned. The following newspaper report records what happened: KEW CHILDREN'S PICNIC. Owing to rain the picnic which the Kew Centenary celebrations committee had arranged for children resident in the municipality, which was to have taken place at Victoria Park yesterday, had to be postponed. The organisers decided to forward to the various schools the luncheons which had been prepared for the children and hurriedly made arrangements for their entertainment at a picture theatre. Needless to say the theatre was crowded to capacity, in addition to special pictures a punch and judy show was provided and a number of aborigines who are in Melbourne for the Centenary gave, exhibitions of native dances and corroborees. The trophies for the sports events are to do competed for at a later date. It includes the following information: Miss Lillias May JERRAM Commandant No. 323 Detachment, Victoria [Citation] Loyal and able leadership and service during World War II Service: Joined No.323 (Kew) Detachment in 1937. Commandant in 1944. Miss Jerram did voluntary duty in casualty and wards at St Vincent's Hospital regularly for 6 years. Also duty at the Eye and Ear Hospital and A.R.P. Duty. Helped No.323 Detachment to raise funds amounting to 400 pounds for St. John Theatre at 115th A.G.H., Heidelberg. Blood donor. The Kew Light Opera Company was formed in 1952, and mounted a number of musical and variety productions each year until it was subsumed in the "Q" Theatre Guild in 1957. Most of the Company's performances took place in the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, Kew. The "Q" Theatre Guild was formed out of the Kew Light Opera Company in 1957. It marked the transition of the company that had initially been directed by Lance Nicholls to one directed by Beatrice Oakley. It continued to perform in the Kew Recreation Hall, but, with its demolition in 1960, and the opening of the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road, moved its productions to that venue. Productions of the "Q" Theatre Guild included The Geisha (1957), Maritana (1958), They All Do It (1959), Blossom Time (1959), Love's A Luxury (1959), There And Back & The Bohemian Girl (1960), Die Fledermaus (1960), Gay Rosalinda (1961), The Land Of Smiles (1961), Kisses For A Kid & Hansel And Gretel (1961), Die Fledermaus (1962), Monsieur Beaucaire (1964), Macbeath or The Beggar's Opera, and So To Bed.The scrapbook of annotated photographs, programmes, and newspaper reviews of which this item is a part was assembled by Marion Tilley, wardrobe mistress for, and performer in, productions by the Kew Light Opera Company and the "Q" Theatre Guild. It is significant as a remarkably complete document of theatre performances in Kew, Victoria during the 1950s and 1960s. The scrapbook, and the items individually catalogued within it, have artistic and aesthetic significance within the history of performing arts in Victoria in the middle of the 20th Century. They have social significance in that they reveal socio-cultural values and preoccupations during the period. The records also act as a history of arts activities in the Kew Recreation Hall and later in the Kew City Hall as entertainment and community arts and music precincts.Souvenir programme issued by the "Q" Theatre Guild for a performance of Franz Lehar's The Land of Smiles in 1961. Henry was a familiar persona in Union Road and around the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre for decades. He lived all his life within 3 kilometres of his radio shop. Son of Catherine and ‘Mick’ Jamieson, Henry was born in 1927 in View Street, Surrey Hills and was educated at Box Hill Grammar School. His father died when he was young and Henry took a job as a technical assistant with the Commonwealth Film Unit. Film was a life-long interest and he became a longstanding member of CATHS (Cinema and Theatre Historical Society of Victoria). Henry also had a profound love of music which was reflected in his work and hobbies. He joined Adrian Knowles, who had started his radio shop at 149 Union Road in the 1940s, and trained at RMIT as a radio tradesman. In time Henry took over the business. When 3MBS established in Kew, Henry was an enthusiastic supporter and volunteer. For some years Henry and a co-producer presented a prime time Saturday evening programme 'Bach to Bernstein'; later his distinctive voice could be heard in the early morning time slot, 'Daybreak'. Henry was also a staunch supporter of the Surrey Hills Historical Society and served as its President for a number of years. Henry died in 2011.
