This book was given to Bill Rogers for his 8th birthday in 1927. Arthur George (Bill) was the grandson of Joseph Rogers, a Warrnambool plumber, and the son of Arthur and Agnes Rogers. Bill Rogers (d. 1995) worked in the advertising department of the Warrnambool Standard for nearly 50 years. He married Lorna Steller and they lived in MacDonald Street in South Warrnambool. This book is of interest as it belonged to Bill Rogers, a Warrnambool resident in the 20th century. It is also of interest as an example of the type of present given to an 8 year-old boy in the 1920s. This is a black leather covered book of 208 pages. There are two sections – The Book of Common Prayer and Hymns Ancient and Modern. The cover is partly detached from the binding and there is gold lettering on the front cover and spine. This book was written and produced by Edward Vidler, Born in England, Edward Vider, a writer, publisher, journalist and editor, was in Geelong in the 1880s where he produce a commemorative volume of that city. In Warrnambool in the early 1900s Vidler was Secretary of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures and of the Warrnambool and District Progress League. In 1907 he produced ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. In 1907 he also organized the project that produced the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board. Later Vidler lived in Melbourne where he edited magazines and published his own and other writings. He was interested in the promotion of the arts and was a keen naturalist. He was a foundation member of the group that established the Maranoa Native Gardens in Balwyn.These books are of the utmost significance as ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ is a seminal work in the history of the Warrnambool – second only in importance to Richard Osburne’s History of Warrnambool published in 1887. ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ is noted for the accuracy of Vidler’s research, its complementary value to Osborne’s history and its presentation of historically valuable material that might otherwise be lost. The photographs in the book are of excellent quality and of great historical value and continue to be scanned and copied today. This book of verses has been written by Ethel Lucy Newcombe (nee Forrester) The daughter of Lucy Sorrell and James William Forrester, she was born in 1874 in Warrnambool. As a Matriculated student she taught at the Warrnambool St. John’s Hall Private School for Girls in the 1890s. The proprietor of this school was her friend, Grace Newcombe and Ethel Forrester, especially talented in literature and music, composed a Cantata, ‘Austral’s Sunny Year’ for the annual school concert in 1898. In 1902 Ethel Forrester married Dr Frederick Newcombe (Grace’s brother), a medical missionary in India. His father Ebenezer Newcombe was well-known in Warrnambool as a timber and hardware businessman. Dr Frederick Newcombe died in India in 1905 and Ethel Newcombe spent the greater part of her later life in Melbourne. She died in 1971. The identity of Arthur, the recipient of the book, is not known. This book is of considerable interest because it was written by Ethel Newcombe who was born and educated in Warrnambool and the book is thus is associated with both the Forrester and the Newcombe families in Warrnambool early in the 20th century This is a soft cover book of 32 pages. This book published by the Australian Red Cross Society has been written by Joan and Daryl Lindsay. The book features the work of many Australian artists in the 1940s. The inscription shows that the book was a prize awarded to Joyce Goodall, a pupil at Warrnambool Technical School. This school commenced in 1913 in Timor Street, Warrnambool, a site now occupied by T.A.F.E. Warrnambool Technical School moved to a Caramut Road site and is now called Brauer College. The book was the James Swan Memorial Prize. Swan had a furniture business in Warrnambool. He was a City Councillor (1922-1936) and Mayor (1926-1928) and Swan Reserve in Raglan Parade is named after him. The donor of the prize, Mrs R. Pattison, was the daughter of James Swan and the wife of Ralph Pattison, Warrnambool Librarian. The winner of the prize, Joyce Goodall (Mrs Joyce Milne) was a member of the Goodall families which have been in the Warrnambool and Mortlake areas since the 1860s. John King was the first Head Teacher of Warrnambool Technical School and remained in that position for 29 years. This book is of interest as all of the names mentioned in the inscription plate in this book have a place in Warrnambool’s history. This is a hard cover book with the pages unnumbered. The cover is yellow with black lettering and the front cover has an emblem of the Red Cross and a laurel wreath in red and black. The cover is partly torn and has been mended with adhesive tape. The contents of the book are largely pictorial and illustrative with some text. This book was published in 1952 by the Australian Poetry Lovers’ Society. This group was based in Melbourne and was founded in 1934 by George and Ethel Fielding. In 1973 a member, Harry Hastings Pearce, wrote a history of the society. This 1952 volume contains two poems by Thomas Terrington (born 1897) - ‘Henry Lawson’ and ‘Stella’. Tom Terrington was a well-known local poet and writer from Framlingham. He has been described as a ‘rhymster of flair and skill’. He was a self-taught person with little formal education and he worked at various jobs until he took over the general store at Framlingham in his middle age. He also recorded some of the history of Framlingham, a small settlement about 24 kilometres north east of Warrnambool. The identity of ‘Fred’ in the inscription is not known. This book is of interest because it contains two poems written by Tom Terrington, a local 20th century writer and poet. This is a soft cover book of 50 pages. The cover is green with black printing and an image of two kookaburras on the front cover. The book has poems by 18 writers and a black and white photograph on page 10 of the late George Fielding. This cook book has been published by the Friends of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village Inc. This group do volunteer work at Flagstaff Hill, publicize the activities and historical collection at the Village and raise funds to carry out improvements and new installations. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village was established in 1975, initially as a private venture sponsored by a group of businessmen in Warrnambool but it was later taken over by the Warrnambool City Council. It operates as an historical park and a tourist venture every day of the year except Christmas Day and has a night Sound and Light Show called ‘Shipwrecked’. The historical collection at the Village features many important shipwreck relics from the area, with the most important being the ‘Loch Ard’ ceramic peacock. The cook book is a tribute to the local women of the past and there are many recipes collected from the ‘Grannies’ of yesteryear. The tea rooms at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village are called ‘Stella Maris’ (Latin for ‘Star of the Sea’) and call to mind both the maritime heritage of the area and the name of the Australian Catholic Missions to Seamen which still operates. This book is of interest as a product of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. It has been edited by John Lindsay who was one of the founders of Flagstaff Hill in 1975 and is today a Life Member and Helen Sheedy who has also been connected with the administration of the Village in the past. This book was a prize awarded to Miss Middleton, a pupil at Ormiston House College, East Melbourne in 1887. The Principals of the school were the Misses Singleton and their father, Dr John Singleton was a practising doctor in Warrnambool from 1860 to 1865. He had an important influence on Warrnambool, establishing several Total Abstinence Societies and campaigning for improved health conditions for pastoral workers in the district and the aborigines at Framlingham. In Melbourne Dr Singleton and his wife worked tirelessly for the underprivileged. He established many institutions for the less fortunate, including the Prisoners’ Aid Society, the Children’s Hospital, lending libraries, cottages for widows, shelters for homeless men and women, a society for the protection of animals and the Collingwood Free Medical Dispensary. He died in 1891 at Ormiston House, his daughters’ school and home. It is not known which of the Singleton daughters ran the school and no information has been found on Miss Middleton. This book is of considerable interest as it has a close connection to Dr John Singleton, important not only in the social history of Melbourne but also in the history of Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 160 pages with 16 pages at the back of the book of advertisements for other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is brown with a sketch of a young man and lettering in gold and an ornamental floral pattern on the front cover. The gold lettering and the ornamental floral pattern are also on the spine. The book has 13 chapters with ornamental scrolls and initials at the beginning and end of each chapter. There are also some full page black and white sketches in the book, with the one at the front of the book covered by a piece of tissue paper. The book plate at the front of the book is white with a gold border pasted onto the page and handwritten details have been added in black ink. This letter book (1922-6) was found in the old Mackay Taylor building in Kepler Street. The Secretary of the Presbytery of Mortlake in the early 1900s was George Mackay who established his legal business in 1891 and merged with the business of James Fletcher in 1893 to form Fletcher and Mackay. In the 1920s J. Taylor joined the business which was known from then on as Mackay and Taylor and this firm existed until the 1990s. George Mackay was prominent in Warrnambool civic and community affairs and was Secretary of St. John’s Presbyterian Church for many years. The Presbytery of Mortlake was an administrative district committee established in 1862 and included the Presbyterian churches of Port Fairy, Tower Hill, Wangoom, Allansford, Warrnambool, Woodford, Hexham, Caramut, Mortlake and Terang. The committee consisted of the local ministers, some elders and other church representatives and met monthly or quarterly to discuss church business that affected the region. This letter book is of some significance as it indicates the type of business carried out by a district church council – properties, missions, individual church problems etc. It also shows the community work of George Mackay, a prominent Warrnambool resident at the time, and the book contains his signature, many times over. The book will be of interest to researchers. This is a ledger with dark blue binding and binding reinforcements on the spine and corners. The inside covers are lined with thick paper in a mottled blue and black coloured pattern. There are 250 pages with entries up to page 54. This scrapbook contains hundreds of auction sale notices for Warrnambool properties (and some more distant) dating from September 1941 to March 1972. In some instances the newspaper article noting the details of the sale and articles recording the result of the sale are included. The names of many of the real estate firms of the period form part of the advertisement. It provides a significant research tool relating to properties in Warrnambool and information to interpret the type of buildings available during this period. The firm of Henry J. Jacobs & Son, Auctioneers & Real Estate Agents was located at 146a Liebig Street with the known dates 1937 to 1964, and at 81 Liebig Street from the 1960s. Henry Jacobs' Frank Jacobs, also worked in the business. This book has been indexed in Houses and Properties Index.This scrapbook is of considerable local significance as it gives a great deal of information on people, properties, prices and sales in the timeframe (19401-1972). It is invaluable to researchers as it contains not only the details of the auctions at the time but also extra information on the owners and buyers and sellers, the names of the properties, the frequency of sales of properties of the time and the names of estate agents operating during the period. This is a printed invitation to the opening of an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat in June 2015. The exhibition was of the art works and calligraphy of James Meek. It was curated by Joan Luxemburg who is writing a book on James Meek’s life and work. James Meek was an important 19th century fisherman, fish curer, accountant, writer, gold explorer and calligrapher. His art works are prized for their historical content and their illustrations of the work of a calligrapher at its best. This card is important as it concerns the art works of James Meek. He was important in the history of Ballarat, Peterborough and Warrnambool in the 19th century. In the latter town he was a well-known punt operator, a gold explorer, a writer and lecturer and a fish company operator. Several of his important calligraphy works were produced in Warrnambool. It has been meticulously compiled from a variety of official war records and local information and is the most comprehensive work available on the records of World War One enlistments from Warrnambool and district. Australia’s military involvement in World War One was highly significant and a most important event in the history of our growth as a nation and our newfound place on the world stage. This book tells the story of the Rev. William Hamilton (1807-1879), a pioneer Presbyterian Minister in the Western District. He studied at Glasgow University, became a Presbyterian Minister and came to Australia in 1837. He spent some time in the Goulburn area in N.S.W and then moved to Kilnoorat in Victoria in 1846, building a manse and a church at Darlington and later two churches at Mortlake. He retired from active ministry in 1873. This book is significant in that it was written by a Presbyterian Minister in 1946 and gives details of the life and work of a local pioneer Presbyterian minister, the Rev. William Hamilton. This book is a novel written by Wendy Scarfe. Born in 1933 Wendy Scarfe was educated at Melbourne University and Melbourne Secondary Teachers’ College. She has taught in Australia, England and India where she worked for the Gandhian Movement. Her final teaching post was at Warrnambool High School (now Warrnambool College). She has published many novels, biographies, volumes of poetry and other works dealing with social issues. Several of her published works were co-authored with her husband Allan (dec. 2016) This book is of considerable interest as the author is a Warrnambool resident and a noted Australian writer. In ‘The Lotus Thorne’ she has drawn on her extensive knowledge of India and its customs and social and economic issues. This copy is a discarded library book. This is a soft cover book of 226 pages. This Bible belonged to Thomas Wong Ch(e)ong who was the catechist at the Warrnambool Chinese Church in Ryot Street, Warrnambool. In 1892 Thomas Wong Cheong was appointed by the Foreign Missions Committee of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria as the catechist to the Chinese community in Warrnambool and district. The Chinese Church in Ryot Street was established in the early 1890s and continued until the late 1920s when the numbers of the local Chinese community had declined. Thomas Wong Cheong and his wife worked tirelessly in the Warrnambool district until his death in 1923. No information has been found on James Yee Keet. This is a book of high significance because it belonged to Thomas Wong Cheong who holds an important place in Warrnambool’s history because of his work with the Warrnambool Chinese community over a period of 30 years. This is a leather-covered book with four gold Chinese characters on the spine and the back cover (the front cover for Chinese readers). The leather on the cover extends over the pages and folds inwards to almost enclose the pages. The pages are gilt-edged. The inscription is handwritten in blue ink. The book contains a fold-out map of the Mediterranean Sea area and all the text is in printed Chinese characters. This book subtitled, ‘A Story of the Amazing Ability and Fidelity of an Australian Black Tracker’, has been written in the late 1930s by Edward Daniel Oakley (1877-1962). He was the fourth child of Thomas and Eliza Oakley who had the farm, Oakbank, near the mouth of the Hopkins River, Warrnambool (Otway Road area today). Edward Oakley first worked at Saltau’s shipping office in Warrnambool then ran a dairy farm, Halifax, near Cudgee. He later had wheat farms in the Grampians area and at Willaura before returning to Warrnambool in 1923. He built a row of shops in Liebig Street and opened a boot and shoe store. He was instrumental in persuading Fletcher Jones to open a shop in Warrnambool. After he retired he researched and wrote the story of Jimmy of Murrumbar. This book is of high significance because: 1. It was written by a local Warrnambool businessman, Edward Oakley. He and other members of his family were prominent residents of the city in the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries 2. It was written in the late 1930s and tells of the story of a young aboriginal boy, one of the early writings appreciating the talents and worth of young aborigines. This is a hard cover book of 181 pages. A buff-coloured dust cover has been pasted over the hard cover and it has a black, grey and white illustration of a young aboriginal boy being chased. This illustration is repeated in black and white on the second page. The titling on the cover is in red and black printing. The front cover has become almost detached from the pages. This collection of short stories by Mary Gaunt has been edited and published by Bronwen Hickman. Mary Gaunt (1861-1942) was a writer of novels, travel books, short stories and other articles. She was known internationally for her writings in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Born in Chiltern, Victoria, she was the first woman to study at Melbourne University, travelled extensively in West Africa and China in areas rarely visited by white women and published 26 books. From 1894 to 1900 Mary Gaunt lived in Warrnambool where her husband, Hubert Lindsay Miller, was a local doctor. Some of her writings were produced while she was in Warrnambool and some have local content. This book, although a modern reprint, is important as the only collection of the short stories of the internationally-known author, Mary Gaunt that we have in our collection. Mary Gaunt not only lived and wrote in Warrnambool for some years but also used local places, people and events in her writings. One of the stories in ‘Life at Deadman’s’ (‘The Humbling of Sergeant Mahone’) is based on the events in the late 19th century when whisky was being made illegallyin the Nirranda district. Mary Gaunt apparently had met the real main character in this saga. This is a soft cover book of 178 pages. The cover is yellow with an image in sepia tones of Mary Gaunt. This book, written for girls by the English novelist, Bessie Marchant, was given as a prize to Claire Gilbert. She was the daughter of Roy and Miriam Gilbert and lived in Coulstock Street. Her father worked at Swintons Store in Warrnambool. She would have been at school in the 1940s. She married a farmer, Ainslie Crothers. It is presumed that ‘Y.W.L’ stands for ‘Young Women’s League’, but no Warrnambool group with this name has been found (apart from a Young Women’s Association run by the Presbyterian Church in the 1920s). This book is of interest as it belonged to a local girl, Claire Gilbert, at school in the 1940s. This book was a prize given to Arthur Rogers in 1928. Arthur George (Bill) Rogers was the grandson of Joseph Rogers, a Warrnambool plumber and the son of Arthur and Agnes Rogers of Warrnambool. He worked in the advertising department of the Warrnambool Standard newspaper for nearly 50 years and died in 1995. It is presumed that the school that awarded the prize was South Warrnambool State School No. 1902. This school was established in 1877 with the first Head Teacher, Mrs Eliza Clarke. It was closed in 1994. The donor of the prize was South Warrnambool Football Club. This club was established in 1902 and has competed in the Hampden Football League since 1933. It is a successful club with many of its players going on to play in A.F.L./V.F.L teams. This is the second edition of a book published originally in 1851. It is an early work concerned with the recording of aboriginal languages and was published in Geelong. The author, Daniel Bunce (1813-1872) was a botanist who went on journeys with aborigines in Victoria in 1839 and later in 1846 joined Ludwig Leichhardt’s second expedition in his attempt to cross Australia from east to west. This was unsuccessful. Bunce’s experiences in 1839 and in 1846 enabled him to write his book on aboriginal languages. In 1858 Bunce became the Director of the Geelong Botanic Gardens and designed and planted out the gardens. No information has been found on Noel Hallowill. This book is of antiquarian interest as an early dictionary of aboriginal languages and as a book written by the botanist, Daniel Bunce. This is a hard cover book of 60 pages. This is a book produced by Rex and Bernice Battarbee and contains reproductions of aboriginal art work, including the work of several of Albert Namatjira’s children. Reginald (Rex) Battarbee (1893-1973) was the son of George and Mary Battarbee who lived in East Warrnambool at a property called ‘Skiddaw’. Rex’s sister, Florinda was a local artist who was his first teacher of art. Rex became a well-known artist, depicting mainly the Central Australian landscape. He is credited with discovering and fostering the artistic talent of Albert Namatjira, the best-known of the early Australian aboriginal artists. This is one of the few mementoes we have of the artist Rex Battarbee who was born in Warrnambool and spent his early years in this city. This is a hard cover book with the pages unnumbered. This is an Irish-Australian novel written in 1922 by Doctor Gerald Baldwin (c.1868-1942). New Zealand born Dr Baldwin was in Warrnambool from about 1900 to 1915. He took over the medical practice and small private hospital of Dr Thomas Scott in Banyan Street, Warrnambool. In 1915 he disposed of the hospital to Sister Ingpen who renamed it ‘Alveston’. Dr Baldwin then practised in Richmond, Melbourne. He wrote novels and plays, with his best-known work being the novel, ‘In Racing Silk’. As well as the novel, ‘Grey Town’, the Historical Society has an original program of a performance in 1914 by the Warrnambool Dramatic Society when Dr Baldwin was in Warrnambool. The program featured a play written by Dr Baldwin, ‘Father O’Flynn’, set partly in Dublin. This book is important because it is a novel written by a local doctor, Gerald Baldwin . He had considerable success with his writings in the early part of the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 262 pages. This book contains selections of the convict stories written by Price Warung, 1864-1911(real name William Astley). He was a journalist and writer who worked for a great number of newspapers throughout Australia and began an important association with the Sydney ‘Bulletin’ in 1890. In this period he write the powerful works for which he is best known, ‘Convict Days’, a series of four volumes of stories about Australia’s convict system. The major theme of these writings is the sordid nature of the convict system. Astley became heavily involved in the Federation campaign, firstly as the Secretary of the Bathurst Federal League and then as the organizing Secretary of the 1896 Bathurst Convention. This Convention is considered by historians to have given the Federation campaign a new and vigorous vitality. In 1898 Astley wrote most of the official articles publishing the ‘Yes’ case for the Federation referendum. In 1883 Astley was in Warrnambool, working as a journalist for the Warrnambool Standard newspaper and examples of his journalism can be found in the papers of this time. He wrote lengthy reports in a free-flowing and attractive but verbose style. His two articles on the well-known horse stud and hop farm called ‘Bryan O’Lynn’ appeared in the Standard in October 1884. This book is of considerable interest as it was written by Price Warung (William Astley). Not only is he of importance in Australia’ history but also he has his place in Warrnambool’s history as a journalist for the Warrnambool Standard in the 1880s. This is a 1918 Day Book listing some employees/contractors and the day-to-day tasks undertaken by them. There is a separate page for each employee. The book lists such tasks as ‘carting from the Quarry’, ‘tarring Raglan Parade’, ‘tarring at the Gardens’, ‘screening Liebig Street’, ‘working at the Ladies’ Baths’ and ‘general patching’. The names of the employees/contractors include Niven, Thompson, Jewell, Walters, Mooney, Rodgers, Williams, Dunne and Gee. The name ‘McKenzie’ on the first page is the only clue to the identity of the employer/overseer and so far his identity has not been established. The jobs listed suggest that he was either an employee of the Warrnambool Council in the Public Works area or a contractor hired to do the same sort of work. This note book is of great interest as it lists workers and the jobs covered by them in 1918 in Warrnambool and it will be of greater significance when the identity of McKenzie is established.This is a note book with ruled blue and red lines. This book contains the story of the Australian Companies of the Imperial Camel Corps in the First World War. The authors are George and Edmee Langley. George Langley (1891-1972) was the principal of Warrnambool High School from 1924 to 1940. He and his wife Edmee were prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool during that time. George Langley served with distinction in both World Wars and rose to the rank of Brigadier in 1944. He intended writing the history of the Australian Camel Corps but died before he could complete the work. Edmee Langley, herself a talented journalist and writer, used her husband’s collection of letters, diaries and writings to publish Sand, Sweat and Camels.This book is of interest as it was written by George and Edmee Langley who were important Warrnambool residents in the 1920s and 30s.
