Henry Christian (c.1809-91) was one of the first settlers in Kew. He arrived in Victoria with his wife Agnes and son Orlando in 1855 on the Gypsy Queen. He established a rope-making business in Bulleen Road by 1858 but was declared insolvent two years later. In his final years, he was celebrated as one of the oldest living settlers of the district. His son, Orlando Henry Beater Christian (c.1853-1930) became a member of the Hawthorn Band and a foundation member of the Willsmere Swimming Club. Orlando and his wife Elizabeth had four children: Henry Beater (1886-1962), Ada Susannah May (1888-1962), Orlando Julius (1891-1917) and Lilian Adelaide ( -1956). Ada married George Herrick Washfold, and had four children: Lilian Mavis, Orlando George Barnard, William Edwin and Henry Clifford (the husband of the donor).An item from an outstanding and diverse photographic collection, assembled by members of the Christian family of Pakington Street, Kew, comprising professional and amateur photography, depicting individuals, natural and settled environments and the interactions between these worlds. Many of the photographs vividly capture the worlds of three generations of men - Henry Christian, his son Orlando Henry Beater Christian, and his grandson of Henry Christian. The most important photographer was the youngest, Henry Christian, who was a keen explorer, not just of his immediate environment but also of the Victorian wilderness. His major opus is contained in two albums in which he records, sometimes in majestic detail and on other occasions the intimate features of the natural world. His photographic travels during the 1920s, often in solitary ramblings but on other occasions with companions, recall the heroic landscape photography of an earlier era, pioneered by Nicholas Caire. In addition to their aesthetic value, the albums are historically significant records within the State of Victoria, of what is now a distant point in time, and of places that have become radically altered through human intervention. The road on which they pause is surrounded by fenced and cleared farmland, stretching away to the distant hills. It is presumed that the subject of the photo is Elizabeth Christian (nee Schoberg) and three of her four children. Hilary Bennet Mason (born 25/12/1911 in North Melbourne; died 16/3/2008) married Olive Marjory Muridge (B 20/7/1915; D 26/9/2001) on 30 September 1940. They has one daughter, born in 1947. Hilary had a number of occupations in his lifetime. His daughter referred to him as a tram conductor. The family lived at 7 Charles Street, Surrey Hills from c1960, having purchased it from William Stanton (Stan) Philp, a baker, and his wife Eileen. The title originally extended over 2 plots. The Philps sub-divided the land and built a new house for themselves at No 9. No 7 Charles Street had a well under the kitchen window; the house was extended in 1971/72; it was sold after Hilary Mason died in 2011. [REF: Personal communication from the donor; Alan Holt property register and online research.] The handwritten timeline refers to the area having been "called Irish Town as Catholic's were in the majority." Most of the writing is that of Hilary Mason, although some blanks have been filled in by another (unknown) hand. There is also an entry by John Whitford, who moved into a new home on the corner of Charles and Arthur Streets in 1982. The last entry is dated June 1996, when Hilary Mason would have been c 85 years old.This is a unique piece of social history reflecting the closeness of this small suburban street.A standard lined exercise book, brand is HEADLINE, which contains a mixture of handwritten entries and pasted in and loose ephemeral items. These include house advertising flyers, newspaper clippings of a general nature and death notices, tickets, etc. The handwritten notes mostly pertain to a timeline of residents and their comings and goings to and from Charles Street in Surrey Hills, but also include some reflections on social history. Memories of other residents of the street are recorded. The Breeden family came to Surrey Hills in 1905, first to Guildford Road, then Middlesex Road where Horrie Breeden lived as a boy. He sometimes used to help with milking at the adjoining Kenneally's dairy in Highfield Road. Sometimes he and his brother drove the cows from there to Schneider's property near Florence Road on the way to Surrey Hills Primary School. The cows would graze here until the boys took them back after school. At other times he would deliver milk from the Croydon Road dairy (Isherwood's or Bovill's) to St Joseph's Boys Home before school. Horrie became an apprentice in woodwork / carpentry at Vine's timber yard before serving in World War 1. Horrie's father died in 1919 and in the same year he bought 3 cows and established his own dairy on his mother's property on the corner of Goodwood Street and Boisdale Road. In the 1920s Horrie built the first house in Goodwood Street. He went on to build others in the street including his own at No 7 Goodwood Street. He did all the joinery and internal fittings for this. Milk bottles such as this one that include the name of the producer or retailer are historically significant as they represent the period in Surrey Hills' history before milk production was centralised. Mac's Shortbread Co dates its history back to a family bakery in Abbotsford opened in the 1860's producing bread for the goldfields. This eventually became McAlpine's Flour. This business was sold in 1960 and the family then purchased a cake shop, leading to building a biscuit factory. (This is thought to have been the Surrey Hills site). The company outgrew this and moved to 5 Tate Drive, Kerang. (Further research required.) Australia adopted metric units of measurement in July 1974, so this object was manufactured after 1974.This tin is material evidence of the small area of industrial activities that once existed in Surrey Hills.A cylindrical tin with a silvered interior and the outside finished in a white enamel paint, on which there is a geometric design incorporating a butterfly.On a label incorporated in the design: "Mac's / MAC'S SHORTBREAD CO. 1 NORFOLK RD./ SURREY HILLS, VIC. Dr Rose was a member of the Surrey Hills Medical Centre for approximately 50 years. Norman was the son of Maurice Rose (1889-1963) and Gertrude nee Gordon (1891-1972) and was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, UK, on 15 September 1916. Norman had an older sister, Irene. As with many migrant families, Maurice departed from London for Melbourne on 27 October 1927 on the ‘Ballarat’ ahead of his family, who sailed on the ‘Bendigo’ on 8 May, 1928. Norman was 12 years old. The family lived in a number of locations including St Kilda, Balaclava and later Elwood. Norman attended Wesley College, following which he enrolled at the University of Melbourne, where he studied medicine, graduating MB BS in 1939. For unknown reasons, post-graduation Norman moved to Perth in March 1940. It was at the Fremantle General Hospital that he met his future wife, Helen Beatrice (Betty) Mackie, and began training in anaesthetics. When World War 2 was declared, Norman enlisted in the army. He was attached to the 2/13th Field Ambulance (AIF). He served in the Middle East and Borneo. Upon their return to Melbourne after the end of the war, Norman completed hospital rotations as a Resident Medical Officer at the Alfred Hospital (1946-1947) and at the Royal Women’s Hospital in 1948. Norman was a close friend of Dr Bill Vorrath, which probably explains how he came to join the Surrey Hills Medical Centre in either 1948 or 1949. Although technically a General Practitioner, Dr Rose focused on Anaesthetics. He was often on call for the Emergency Department at Box Hill Hospital and he also taught many students how to administer an epidural. In 1972, under the so-called ‘Grandfather Clause’, he was registered as a Specialist Practitioner in Anaesthesia. Dr Rose’s long service to Box Hill Hospital was recognised with the award of Life Governorship of the Hospital in 1978. Dr Rose married for a second time after his first wife Betty died in 1997. He retired in 1998 or 1999 and died in 2010 in his 94th year. Information from the donor by email gives: Norma Pryde is identified as the girl in the second row on the far right. Her parents Norman & Hilda Pryde lived at 50 Broughton Road, Surrey Hills. The home was named 'Strathaven' after the town in Scotland where Norman's father came from. Norman & Hilda were married in 1923. Norma was born in 1924. Norman worked for Moran & Cato so the family moved around a lot for his work and is thought to have rented out the house from time to time. During some time in the 1920s they were listed on electoral rolls in Nyah West and then in 1942 they were listed in Hamilton. When the war ended they came back to Melbourne and in the late 1940s built a home at Blackburn. Norma married John Cleak in 1947 in Camberwell. He had multiple copies of this photo, which may have been obtained with the aim of distributing them to other platoon members. Leslie George Lobb - born 15 July 1920 in Box Hill; married Elizabeth Annie Stephenson in 1954; died 14 Nov. 1997. Leslie became a service station / garage proprietor at 352 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert a business he took over from his father. An associated mechanical business operated under the name of Leo Green Motors, at the same address. The family lived next door at 354 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert. Leslie's father Harry Lobb had operated at an adjoining property (350 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert) as a fuel and ice merchant, before installing a petrol bowser to service the expanding motor car industry. The house at 354 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert was removed and relocated by the family in 2000 to Mirboo North, Gippsland, Victoria, where it still stands.The photo is a touchstone to local servicemen who served in World War 2.A B&W / sepia photo with a narrow white border of 25 men in uniform. This photo was taken at the opening of the footbridge by Sir Winston Dugan in 1936.South Surrey Park was developed on land which had been the property of the Kleinert family. Their land extended from Union Road to Essex Road. They ran horses, ducks and fowls and Emily Kleinert grew flowers. Alan Holt research: Lot 6 was sold to Martin Klienert by Karl Richter in 1860 together with a portion of another adjacent lot. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. In a formal document, William declared he was the son of Martin "who purchased land in 1860, died in 1898 and the land has been continually occupied by father and family since. It has been cultivated as a market garden; when not being used for gardening it was let for cultivation and grazing." William died in 1939 and the property passed to his sons Martin and Ernest. The family sold the land to the Camberwell Council in the 1950s.This photo is significant as it shows the transition from rural to urban land use in Surrey Hills.Black and white photo taken in the area later known as South Surrey Park. This photo was taken by Victor Cattoni of Ingham in Queensland when he was in Melbourne on his honeymoon in 1953. The donor (his son) knew of no connection between his father and the Conlon family. Victor and his wife, Julia, travelled to Melbourne on the 'Mananda', which had been converted into a hospital ship in 1940. Victor was a motor mechanic and business man in Ingham and later a sugarcane farmer at nearby Abergowrie. Conlon's bread factory was located at 410-412 Canterbury Road on the corner of The Avenue. The site was purchased in 1927 by Michael Conlon and the factory built in 1928/1929. The original Conlon bakery was at 108 Union Road. This became to retail shop until the 1940s with the family involved in both the bakery and the shop. The photo is representative of the era when home deliveries by horse and cart were made by local traders including the baker, green grocer and dairy man. The photograph features the Administration building of the former Sunbury Asylum and its Ha-ha wall which are located in the Jackson Hill estate. In the early 1990s, many indoor and outdoor improvements were undertaken at the Bulla Primary School which included updated playground equipment. the children in this photograph are using one of the pieces of equipment that was installed in the school ground at that time. The children from Bulla and MIckleham schools were attending a school camp at Beechworth and one of the activities was hiking in one of the nearby hills. The children from Bulla Primary School were taken on an excursion to Gellibrand hill Park which is a short distance from the School. The emphasis on the day's excursion was to identify the native fauna in the park as well as the vegetation.The property was originally settled by the Greene family in 1843. In 1980 the State Government purchased the property and it is now one of the state's parks where the natural vegetation has gradually been restored on the property.
