William (Billy) Bird No VX113169 2/14 Batt AIF. Refer 1601. William Bird was born on the 15th of April 1924, enlisted in the AIF on the 19th of October 1942 when he was 18 years of age. HMAS BENDIGO (J187) was an Australian made "Corvette" which served throughout WW2 until 'paid off' on 27 September 1946. The Bendigo Military Museum also holds the last ensign of HMAS BENDIGO, it has a large number of auto graphs. We also hold the wooden crest and Battle Honours Board, this is on loan for 5 years. Refer to Cat 4546 Ensign.1. This is a medium size ships bell. It is cast from Brass. It has a protrusion on the top with a hole in it, used for mounting. The words HMAS BENDIGO 1941 are engraved into the side and painted black. The exterior surface has a few pits, but has been polished numerous times. The interior surface is rough cast, with a large quantity of dints, where it has been struck by the clapper. 2. This is the clapper. There is a steel hook under which is a weight of steel. Under that is a ring. Suspended from the bottom ring is the rope handle. This is an excellent example of navy rope work. At the top of it is a metal ring. Under that is a white and red stylised crown. Under the 'headband' of the crown is a white rope handle with blue inserts. At the bottom is a large rope "Ball" with numerous rope threads of about 180mm length.ww2, ran, hmas bendigo

A brass stud and leather loop secure the free end of the belt tongue. A pair of brass rings are attached to the top edge of the belt for the attachment of the shoulder strap. A pair of squared “D”rings and a brass flat hook are located on the lower edge of the belt on the left side for the attachment of a sword frog. .2) Brown leather shoulder strap is attached at the front and rear of the belt by a brass stud and eyelet. Adjustment via a brass buckle. .3) Brown leather sword frog stitched on both sides with a brass “D” ring attached to the top. A brass post is placed at the centre where the supporting straps meet in a V. From accompanying interpretive sign,"Early life jackets and life- rings were made using cork for bouyancy. A poignant reminder of the risks facing seafarers". Triangular and rectangular pieces of cork are from old life jackets. Curved piece with canvas remnant and white paint is a section of an old life ring. The piece with hole and split is a float off a fishing net. As cork is also used to provide buoyancy to fishing nets, further information on these fragments, such as their degree of rarity, and the historic use of cork for buoyancy in relation to lightstations and rescue equipment would be helpful. They will have second level contributory significance if it can be established that they are historically associated with the functions of the lightstation. 1. Triangular shaped piece of cork, has holes and cracks. 2. Rectangular shaped piece of cork, has large holes through piece. Remains of white textile covering on two sides (long sides). Piece is slightly convex. 3. Rectangular pieceof cork. Corners are rounded . Rough pitted surface. 4. Tube shaped section of cork. Has hole through middle with split in one side extending to hole. Around outside there are even lines extending horizontally.

Hames are attached to a horse collar used to distribute the load around a horse's neck and shoulders when pulling a wagon or plough. The collar often supports and pads a pair of curved metal or wood pieces, called hames, to which the traces, which attach to the wagon or plough, of the harness are attached. The collar allows the horse to use its full strength when pulling. This pair of hames would have been used on a farm in the Orbost district. Horses were a vital part of the agricultural industry in Orbost before the mechanisation of farm machinery. This item is associated with that time.A pair of all metal horse hames, flat and angular shape. They are held together by a metal chain. Each has a hook attached and a metal ring at the end. This is a badge issued to members of the Warrnambool Racing Club for the 1956-7 season. Race meetings have been held in Warrnambool since the early days of European settlement, from 1848 on, with the Warrnambool Racing Club formed in 1854. The present day race track was first used in the late 1850s. The most important meeting of the Warrnambool Racing Club is the May Racing Carnival held over three days with the main feature being the well-known Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase. This is a local badge and is retained as an example of a member’s badge of the Warrnambool Racing Club in the mid 1950s. This is a round metal badge with gold lettering on a black background and a black, green and gold image of a horse and rider clearing a hurdle. This is one of four bottles in our Collection that were recovered by a local diver from the quarantine area just inside the Port Phillip Heads. Ships were required to pull into this area to check for diseases etc before they could head up to Melbourne. Quite often they would drink and throw the bottles overboard. Handmade glass bottle, manufactured in 1850's - 1900's. Glass bottles and glass jars are in many households around the world. The first glass bottles were produced in south-east Asia around 100 B.C. and the Roman Empire around 1 AD. America's glass bottle and glass jar industry were born in the early 1600s when settlers in Jamestown built the first glass-melting furnace. The invention of the automatic glass bottle blowing machine in 1880 industrialized the process of making bottles. In 2019, plans were made to re-introduce milk glass bottle deliveries to Auckland in early 2020. The earliest bottles or vessels were made by ancient man. Ingredients were melted to make glass and then clay forms were dipped into the molten liquid. When the glass cooled off, the clay was chipped out of the inside leaving just the hollow glass vessel. This glass was very thin as the fire was not as hot as modern-day furnaces. The blowpipe was invented around 1 B.C. This allowed molten glass to be gathered at the end of the blowpipe and blown into the other end to create a hollow vessel. Eventually, the use of moulding was introduced, followed by the invention of the semi-automatic machine called the Press and Blow. In 1904 Michael Owens invented the automatic bottle machine. Before this time most glass bottles in England were hand blown.
