From 1884 College Cups were donated by the Old Collegians Association for the outstanding athlete amongst ‘present boys’ and ‘past boys’. One cup was awarded to the outstanding old collegian athlete. John Mercer Walker (BD 23/02/1888) attended Ballarat College 1899 - 1904. At the Annual Sports Day almost the entire athletics program was devoted to the heats associated with the awarding of the College Cup (Senior) and the Old Collegians Cup. Competitors had to run in three handicapped races over 120, 250 and 440 yards respectively. So high was the regard for the winner of the Senior Cup that Old Collegians would refer to past events as happening 'in the year X won the College Cup'. The Ballarat Old Collegians Association notes in The Minervan 1913 that "each year the Association presents to the College Sports committee the College Cups (Senior and Junior), the Old Collegians Cup and the Veterans Plate. Raymond Dawson Vaughan attended Ballarat College under Principal Major John Garbutt until 1909. He was one of the first students to enrol in the new Agricultural Science Course at Ballarat High School in 1910. he completed this course with credits and high honours. After leaving school he was involved in agricultural and pastoral pursuits at Lorcan in the West Wimmera. Ray served in WW1 and was killed in action, aged 25, on 9 June 1917 at Messines. His plaque in No 2041 in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour. Henry Youle Hind (10/11/1894 - 15/05/1979), son of Henry Dalzell Hind and Alice Louise nee Evans, Victoria Ave, Ballarat. He entered the school in 1910 as a 16yo (peer year 1912). The Senior Cup was a prestigious award for the winning athlete at the Ballarat College annual sports program. It is obvious from written records Two cups were awarded to students – a Junior Cup and a Senior Cup. One cup was awarded to the outstanding Old Collegian athlete each year. This particular trophy was returned to the school and used as a House competition Cup in the Senior Boys Boarding House during the 1980s. After 1980 the trophy was removed from the Boarding House by persons unknown but returned during the 1990s. After repair in 2003 the Senior Boys Boarding House used it as a perpetual Trophy until 2005. The Hind family contacted the school and requested a photograph of the trophy in 2005. Edmund Fox Moore (7/4/1884 - 4/10/1917) entered Ballarat College 6 March 1899 (peer year 1901). Son of Edmund Notley Moore and Josephine nee Fox, of 'Myra' Sturt St, brother of Otuel Alan Moore (peer year 1903). Previously studied at Haileybury IV Form. Edmund served in World War I and was killed in action in Belgium in October 1917. This item is the 1900 Ballarat College Senior Cup which was won by E F Moore. The Senior Cup was awarded to boys who were good 'all-rounders'. Alexander Rushall established a fund to encourage boys to study for higher education. He set up a scholarship which is still available today.
