Elizabeth WEBBER nee EDDY. c1851 - 1928, the daughter of James & ... EDDY was born in Cornwall cl 851. At the time of her marriage she was living at her father's home in Ballarat where James EDDY was a ginger beer manufacturer. Elizabeth, who was 21 years of age exchanged marriage vows with the Reverend Samuel Phelp WEBBER on 4th April 1871. The groom who had left Cornwall in April 1869, was 29 years of age.| The wedding rites, performed by the Rev. Richard WARREN, were those of the Bible Christian Church which at a later date combined with various branches of the Wesleyian to become at the end of the 19'h century, the Methodist Church of Australia.| During Samuel's ministry, he and his wife moved around Victoria - in the goldfields of Ballarat & Sandhurst, later named Bendigo; Horsham and Daylesford and a city parish in Fitzroy. He was also (sic) President Conference B.C.C.| Samuel died during the summer of 1897, on the 14th February, St| Valentine's Day.| It is thought by a family member that this couple had five children, three girls and two boys.| After his death, Elizabeth who was confined to a wheel chair lived with her children. While visiting a daughter in Adelaide she died on Christmas Eve 1928.| Elizabeth,' with a younger daughter made baby wear to augment their income. This daughter's daughter, Beryl married W. Established in 1880, the Eaglehawk Football Club was one of the first teams to join the Bendigo Football League and to date the senior team has won twenty eight premierships, the most of any team in the league. The Eaglehawk colours are represented by two blues, the light blue of Oxford University and dark blue of Cambridge University which is represented on this pin in the coloured enamel. This pin issued in 1925 commemorates Eaglehawk Football Club's 1924 win which was played at Kennington Oval against Rochester. Final scores were 14.17.101 to 8.9.57. The Bendigo Football League formally known as the Sandhurst Football Association was formed in 1881 and over the decades has grown to include some of the longest established teams in Australia including Castlemaine (formed 1859 - joined 1925) and Kyenton (formed1875 - joined 1947). The local municipal councils worked with the League to provide playing fields for the competition and the Upper Reserve now known as the Queen Elizabeth Oval continues to host many League games. In 1928 at the annual dinner it was noted by the Bendigo Football League that the 'grounds were not all that could be desired, but that they were getting along well with the councils'. Danish brothers, Moritz, Julius and Jacob Cohn arrived in Bendigo in 1853 and by 1856 started making cider and soft drinks, building a brewery 1880 to further extend their commercial enterprises and stock their hotels with their own brand of beer. Having sent Moritz's son, (also Julius) to Germany to learn to brew, the Cohn Brothers began to produce Excelsior Lager in 1882, which was traditionally served cold, the first time this had been done in Australia. Overtime the Cohn brothers expanded their operations adding cordials and in 1916 produced a non-alcoholic beer to satisfy the temperance activists. This label is associated with a non alcoholic larger originally named Tonic Ale but re-named 6 o’clock Lager after the temperance advocates succeeded in having pubs close at six o’clock. Cohn Brothers built an empire of breweries, cordial factories, hotels and liquor stores and ice works. In 1925 they sold the hotels and breweries to Carlton & United but continued to make their other products until the 1970s when the company became part of the Coca Cola Amatil Group. Jacob Isaac Cohn was born in 1830 (died 1911) in Horsens Denmark and entered the Sandhurst Borough Council in 1863 where he served as a member for three years, returning again in 1887 to serve as Mayor of the City of Bendigo from 1888-1889. Jacob Cohn was a great supporter of the Mechanics Institute, the Hospital and the Benevolent Asylum. It is believed that through his connection with the Mechanics Institute he exhibited some loaned engravings from the Dresden Art Gallery which were then donated to the City of Bendigo, forming the nuclei of the Art Gallery's collection. ROBINA MARSHALL was born on 30 November 1833 (Lerwick, Shetland, Scotland, United Kingdom as the first child of Andrew MARSHALL and Barbara GROAT).She had one sibling,,who died on 19 December 1919 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. In 1854, left Liverpool on the Stamboul on 18 May and arrived Melbourne on the 21st of August at the age of 20. She went to Bendigo to help her sister Lillian (possibly Gibson). While in Bendigo she met and married Charles Fox on 13 September 1855 in Sandhurst, Bendigo. and they had two children Charles and Edward. Charles FOX was born in 1857 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia (Ballarat East).He died on 10 April 1862. Edward FOX was born on 20 January 1862 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia (Ballarat West). When Edward was 4 years of age when husband Charles died. She then moved to Ballarat and at the age of 31, she married John Smith WATSON,son of William WATSON and Agnes Nance SMITH, on 30 November 1864. John Smith WATSON and Robina MARSHALL had the following children: 1. William Andrew WATSON was born on 19 June 1865. 2. Barbara WATSON was born in 1871.She died about 1873. 3. Robert Carr - correspondence to BHS and life history information sent back to writer re Carr (Great Extended Hustlers). Robert Carr was born Magherfelt Ulster 1833 and educated in agricultural pursuits. He arrived at Eaglehawk (part of Sandhurst) 4 miles from Bendigo in 1853 and began alluvial mining in 1855. Robert was on the committee to establish the Presbyterian Church at Eaglehawk. Robert began reef mining at Hustlers and Extended Hustlers mines and was manager in 1881. Robert was also a past Secretary of Oddfellows. In the years 1871-2 the mine yielded marvellous cakes of gold. He was a model mine manager. During 1872 he was on the committee of School of Mines. In the year 1873 he fell 60 feet down an abandoned shaft and not badly hurt. Robert died in May 1893, aged 60 years, and at the time of death was director of Great Extended Hustlers, Hustlers Company. Alexandra Fountain is regarded as one of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia's most prominent landmarks and monuments. The fountain is located in Bendigo's "Charing Cross", the intersection of View Street and Pall Mall. Haring Cross effectively stands at the centre of the city and is one of Bendigo's busiest and most prominent intersections. The fountain stands opposite to the main entrance of Rosalind Park. Alexandra Fountain was funded from the proceeds of the Bendigo Juvenile Industrial Exhibition (1879), a £500 gift from George Lansell and a further £700 from the Sandhurst City Council (now the City of Greater Bendigo). The fountain was designed by W. C. The following pages are carbon copy records of work completed for each customer, recording date and description of work along with price. The pages are printed with the numbers 01 to 99 in the top right-hand corner. Pages 01 to 94 have been used. Pages 95 to 99 are blank. The descriptions of work mostly relate to work completed on cars but also includes hiring out of cars, destination and miles travelled. The customers include army personnel and recruiters. Each page is signed and or checked off in red pencil. The brown hard cardboard cover is worn and marked. The spine of the book is brown canvas. The pages are stapled together. Centenary of St. John's Presbyterian Church Forest Street, Bendigo 1872-1972. List of former Ministers of St. John's Church. A brief account of the history of the church is given. Extracts from minutes of Presbytery Church of Castlemaine 2/7/1872 states that they had not yet held any Sabbath Services in Sandhurst a grant not exceeding Twenty Pounds to meet the expenses of such Services necessary to establish a Second Charge in Sandhurst. Services were conducted in the Albion Hall, collections were obtained were liberal, Memorial signed by 104 members and adherents who expressed their desire to be recognized as a Congregation. St. John's first met at the Orderly Room (site of the Art Gallery), then at the Albion Hall (site of the Royal Princess Theatre), they then moved to St. James Hall (now Myer Store). In 1874 a weatherboard church in Forest St. was erected seating 550 persons, and named St. John's Presbyterian Church. It then became known as St John's Free Church and in 1880 it was admitted into the Presbyterian Church of Victoria and named Chalmer's Church. History accounts goes on to explain the further changes which happened within the church to 1972. Many other details have been included in the book such as the costs of the pews the 'Ladies Work Committee', a monthly church paper, Anniversary platform, securing a Manse, the year of the 'black-out', food parcels, the purchase of a building, the pioneering of religious films in church services, renovations, Sunday School, Stewardship Campaign, electronic organ. The boy Jack is John Adrian Dower, (Born 1893 Rochester, Died 1952 Paynesville) is standing to the front of the couch and holding a bat? On the back is written: To Grandma (Elizabeth Dower (Born 1833) from Ivy & Jack. Parents of Jack and Ivy are (James Martin Dower Born 1859, Fryers Creek, Victoria and Died 11th October 1942 at Brighton. Mother was Florence Amy Chalmer, Born 1867, Sandhurst, Vic, Died 13th August , Brighton Vic.1953). Dowar, Dunstan and Opie names are related and are associated with Bendigo district. The photo is part of an album with other members not identified as yet. Coincidentally Neville Davies from the BHS has this photo in his family history photographs.
