Letter to Michael from S. Carr, dated 1 Apr '96. S. Carr has enclosed a list of Debts he owes and he asks Michael to square up when the division of the Estate takes place. He doesn't know if the jewellery will be sold or not, but he would like a piece to keep in remembrance of his father. The loan from T. W. Mason he wished to keep secret because there might be a little bit of unpleasantness in the family. He also mentions one or two small sums from Mr. Neill which he has no account of. He also mentions he has a life assurance with the Australian Mutual Provident Society and where the policy is, and also if anything else crops up he will let him know. Signed S. Carr. Tool - Whaling Spade, n.d
Part of the collection purchased from Brendan Kurtze by the City of Portland. From the Kurtze Museum. Spades were used primarily for cutting up a whale. They were flat-bladed implements (except the gouge spade) with a chisel cutting edge and were mounted on wood poles by means of a socket at the aft end of the spade. The blades of later spades, after the 1850's, were usually made of cast steel, while the sockets and shanks were wrought iron. Cast steel held a cutting edge far better than the earlier wrought iron, and was necessary for repeated cutting. The sockets of spades were forge welded closed, without an open seam, for added strength. They were secured to the pole with a nail, screw or pinWhaling implement, iron, painted gloss black. Alice Bryant was born in 1850 and died in 1931. She lived most of her life at Linton and did not marry. Susie Burden, formerly Bryant, née Voutier (1863-1942) married Alice's brother Frank Bryant in 1908. They ran a store in Sussex Street which sold pies, ice-creams, confectionery, tea & coffee etc. Frank Bryant died in 1919 and in 1931 Susie married Philip Burden. Susie Burden died in 1942.
