Bottle - Cream, 1940's
Cream came in bottles bought at the local store or at a large city store on a shopping expedition. The shape of the bottles changed as did the stopper used to seal it - the cardboard one predating the aluminium seals. Liquids were measured in pints pre 1966.Historical: Change of bottles - shape, size, stopper, embossing Aesthetic: Display showing embossing, size and shape Clear glass cream bottle with straight edges half way up tapering to the top where there is a thick lip on the outside. Opening is wide. There is an inner rim inside the opening which held a cardboard disc which fitted on to seal it. Painting, Sydney Pern, [Seascape] by Sydney Pern, Pre 1967
Sydney PERN (c1876-1967) Dr Sydney Pern began practicing medicine in Yarram before setting up practice in Ballarat. He was a competent artist, and as an amateur anthropologist collection Aboriginal artefacts during travels in Central and Northern Australia. Dr Sydney Pern died aged 91 on 23 October 1967, and is buried in the Ballaarat New Cemetery. The ethnographic collection was housed at his home, 10 Raglan Street North, before being donated to the Ballarat School of Mines Museum. When the museum was closed in the 1960s Dr Pern requested that the collection pass to the City Council, and from there it was housed at the Gold Museum. An artwork by Sydney Pern was exhibited in the 1958 Crouch Prize at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Sergeant Payne was selected as one of three representatives from the 8th Light Horse to a review of the King's Banners presented to Australian regiments following the South African campaign. The review was held 14 November 1904. Motor Spirit Highly Inflammable Transporting Tin Container "Motor Spirit" is just another name for petrol. "K" and the "KS" Kasey Trolleys were two stroke petrol motors Operation, Care and Maintenance of Track Motors Victorian Railways, 1959 http://www.geoffsrailpix.com/Documents/Motors.pdf#zoom=100 gives the following : Inspection motor type B, - straight petrol Inspection motor type V, - pre-mixed petrol Motorised tricycle type M.T., - pre-mixed petrol Gang motor type K.S., - pre-mixed petrol Gang motor type K - pre-mixed petrol Motor cars altered for rail uses (Wiki) Petrol Inspection Car This was a small car numbered '1' and named the Inspection Car. It was built in England in 1923, but was not found in the 1936 stocktake. Gang Motor The eight-horsepower Gang Motor held five people, and was built at Arden Street in late 1923. In 1950 the vehicle was removed from the rolling stock register and given to "Way and Works" as a track motor. Motor Car The Motor Car was put into service in mid 1925, after being fitted with rail wheels in lieu of tyres. In 1927 the car was named "Mr Molomby's Inspection Car", and allocated to Seymour. It was scrapped in 1952. Dodge Cars There were seven Dodge cars in rail service. The cars were numbered 1 to 6, with car 7 listed "No 7 Repair". The cars were built by the Dodge Company of Melbourne and assembled at Newport. Construction was in 1925 and they lasted until 1949.
