A photo of a group of widows outside a block of units in Windsor, that Legacy purchased to provide accomodation for widows. Names unknown but possibly the first tenants to move into the units. From the date stamp is it February 1976. The September 1975 edition of the Legacy Newsletter to Widows, mentions the 20 flats purchased by Legacy at 9 The Avenue, Windsor, and that they are being renovated for widows to live in. Two options were presented, an 'ingoing' amount of $5,000 then a week maintenance charge of $7 a week; or on a rental basis of approximately $20 a week. (a copy of the Title deed shows the flats were purchased on 7 February 1975). Purchase price was $205,000 with the Department of Social Security requiring the addition of lifts to the building (approximate cost $100,000). From President's highlights report in 1981 we know that external blinds were added to the property. The Windsor units were named "Miriam and Frederick James Ramsay Lodge" after a generous donation in 1987. It was decided the Windsor units, and the ones in Hawthorn, would be sold in 2003 and announced by President Tony Parkes. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. Certificate issued by the Independent Order of Rechabites Temperance Friendly Society to Victorian state school children who had passed the temperance physiology examination. The Independent Order of Rechabites began in Salford, England in 1835. It was named after Rechab, a leader in the Old Testament, who instructed his tribe to refrain from drinking alcohol. During the Industrial Revolution the idea of temperance became popular as damage was caused to families by alcohol. In Australia it was first established in Tasmania in the mid 1800s. In 1847 a branch was created in Victoria, and it then spread to other States. Members were provided with assistance during times of sickness, death and hardship. The Victoria District of Rechabites (District No. 82) was established in the 28th January 1861 In its heyday the Victoria Rechabites’ membership numbers grew and grew to the extent that there were at one stage in excess of 36,000 members associated with the Victorian Rechabites in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s covering approximately 250 operating Tents. The certificate was issued to Helen Marion Blackman in 1949. A vintage early 1800's brown hardcover children's book with the title The Adventures of a Three Guinea Watch printed in gold diagonal letter on the front cover with a black lined illustration of two boys playing with a fob watch sitting inside a large barrel. The spine has the title and RTS symbol for the publisher printed in gold lettering. The back cover has a black lined drawing of a boy reading a book in front of a bookcase with the heading: THE BOYS OWN BOOKSHELF printed in a banner above. There are flowers and butterflies too. The frontispiece illustration depicts a woman and a man with a boy in football clothes talking. It is covered with faded tissue paper. The title page has the title, author, publisher details and the same black lined illustration as is featured on the back cover. Throughout the book are many black lined illustrations. At the back is page of further Books for Boys published by The Religious Tract Society. The author,Talbot Baines Reed wrote school stories for boys. The land in Chapel Street was granted by the Presbyterian Church in 1869. A church was finally built by Alex McLardy at a cost of £127 and was dedicated in august 1895. The first Presbyterian Church services held on Phillip Island in 1889 were conducted under a tree in the open air. May 1890 Dr. Alexander Robb was appointed the first Minister and continued until his death 11 years later. 1929 an annex was built providing more accommodation. 1968 the joint Presbyterian and Methodist congregation was formed. Station Sign - Puffing Billy Direction Trains At Menzies Creek, a Puffing Billy train has had to pass another train since 1966, due to a single line in operation from Belgrave or Emerald / Lakeside / Cockatoo / Gembrook to enable more trains to operate. When two trains passed at Menzies Creek, to assist passengers to travel on the correct train, this sign was erected. The arrows pointed towards the direction of travel as well as the locomotive that was hauling the train. This sign dates from 1975 when the line was re-opened to Lakeside. B 1920 Trained as a Deaconess and then took up a position with the Methodist Department of Christian Education where she worked for 15 years. Then joined the Joint Board of Christian Education staff in 1961 and worked there until 1970. Miss Reid was one of the earliest women to become ordained when it was allowed. Ordained in 1971 her first ministry was Ormond and Carnegie South. In 1975 she moved to Rosanna, then Strathmore in 1981. Given permission to retire in August 1985 due to ill health.
