A small green format school reader No 353 from the Whitcombe's Story Books series : The Crooked Brownie for Ages 8 to 9 Years. The title is printed in red lettering on the front cover with the series above and age group beneath in black lettering. Inside a black lined rectangular shape is a lined drawing of a frog talking to the brownie - on a sign is written 'Samuel Frog Furniture Maker'. 1/- for the cost is in the right hand bottom corner. Inside the front and back covers are additional series Whitcombe & Tombs Ltd publishes. The story has 10 chapters with black and white illustrations. This is a docket indicating that the Woodford State school has purchased sweets in the 1950s for its annual picnic from Norm McDowell, a storekeeper at Bushfield. Bushfield and Woodford are small settlements seven kilometres north of Warrnambool. Woodford State School began in 1854 and is still operating today.No further information has been found on Norm McDowell but his general store was operating in the 1950sThis docket is of interest as the only memento we have of a Bushfield storekeeper some fifty tears agoA rectangular piece of paper torn from a dockets book. This Elector's Right Certificate, No. 206179, is for Samuel Richardson, a sawyer, who lived at Bullarook in the Ballarat East Division. It has been signed by W. Cantwell, the registrar and by Samuel Richardson. As a resident and a male he was entitled to vote in the Ballarat East Division at Victorian State elections. Samuel Richardson was a sawmiller and farmer in Orbost. He built The Curlip, a wooden paddle-steamer of 9 tons gross and dimensions of 43 feet long, 10 feet wide and a depth of 3 feet, on the slipway at their Tabarra sawmill in 1890. In 1860, Charles Herold of Ballarat, a gold miner applied to be naturalized. He was born in Kitzinger Bavaria and at the age of thirty-five arrived by the ship "Mary Ross" in Tasmania in 1854 from Hamburg. He then came to the Colony of Victoria by the SS "Queen" in 1857. He wished to purchase land and settle in the Colony for life. This was granted but he first needed to swear an Oath before one of the Judges of the Supreme Court. The Certificate was signed by Henry Barkly. Charles Herold took the Oath before Robert Molesworth, Judge of the Supreme Court on 18 July 1860.Thick cream paper, hand written in ink. It is believed that the C. Lim Kee who was paying these rates was Charles Lim Kee. According to the Rutherglen Sun September 11, 1896 he was starting a business known as the Cash Bakery in premises previously occupied by Conrad Huhs. In 1903 he moved to new premises next to the Bank of Victoria. By 1908 he had a shop and rooms in Main Street, and houses in Wallace Street and Murray Street. Part of a collection of business documents found under the floor of a building in Main Street when it was being renovated. At that time the owner was Don Chambers, and the premises was occupied as the Chambers Riteway Supermarket. The location (134 Main Street) is currently (2022) occupied by Miegel’s Pharmacy Rutherglen. Receipt from Rutherglen Waterworks Trust for water rates for a house in Murray Street. The form is printed on paper with hand written details reproduced with carbon paper.,"Rutherglen Waterworks Trust, No. of service 278. [receipt no.]: 605. Rutherglen, August 14th 1914. Typed notes on the life of Legatee Stan Savige's business. It says: "In 1923 (then Mr S G Savige) he was appointed selling agent for the Geelong R. S. & S. Woollen Mills, establishing his sub-agents in all the capital cities of Australia where the products of the mill were sold. He continued in this capacity until the time of his death. The business is still carried on under the name of S.G. Savige Pty Ltd." With an added note from Frank Doolan dated 1/1/1958, that the attached pages include a copy of Legatee Schofield's speech at the first Annual Meeting of Geelong Legacy following Stan's death. He says it quotes a few slabs verbatim from Stan's speech of 4/11/1939. That speech titled 'Legacy and Sister Clubs' is also in the archive.
