Photograph, Marshall's Blacksmith Shop 1883
This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. William Marshall opened his new premises in Main Street in June 1869. In the following November he opened a wheelwright shop adjacent to his smithy. Mr T. Carlton was the wheelwright. The Marshall Blacksmith building was located next to the ANA Hall in Main Street. It was demolished in 1910 to make way for a new building known as the Chambers Building. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the blacksmith played an essential role in the functioning of the whole community. Before the industrialisation of manufacturing, all metal objects, including farm implements, building requirements and domestic utensils were made by hand. As mechanisation of industry increased, the smith commonly performed the role of farrier in the times when horse power was pivotal to all aspects of society. Complementing this work, the forge was often allied with a wheelwright's shop. These premises also acted as a meeting place for the men of the town, where news was shared and friendships forged. Photograph, James Reid's Wheelwright and Blacksmith's Shop 1883
James Reid was born in Scotland near Glasgow and came to Victoria as a young man in 1854. Shortly after arriving he came to Bacchus Marsh where he lived until his death in 1902 at the age of 74 years. For most of these years he conducted a wheelwrights and coach builders business in Bacchus Marsh. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wheelwrights and blacksmiths played an essential role in the functioning of the whole community. Before the industrialisation of manufacturing, wheels and other components of vehicles for transport, all metal objects, including farm implements, building requirements and domestic utensils were made by hand. The house shown at the rear was James Reid's residence. Two people, an elderly gentleman and a younger woman, are seated in a jinker on the road to the side of the shop. Photograph, Woolpack Stables Bacchus Marsh 1883
This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. James Elijah Crook settled in Bacchus Marsh in 1841 and soon after held a licence for a lodging house on the Portland Road. In about 1845, he built the first Woolpack Inn, a slab building of eight rooms. This was replaced in 1850 with a “stately country villa” of brick and stone. The stables were also built in 1850 to accommodate twenty horses. In 1851, Crook established a coach service to the goldfields. After being in use as a Court of Petty Sessions, the Woolpack Inn lost its licence and closed in 1862. After this date, Crook took an interest in horse-breeding and continued to use the stables for his horses. His most notable success was with his horse, Saladin, which won the Australia Cup in 1872, after two exciting dead-heats with The Flying Dutchman. James Elijah Crook died in 1889. The Woolpack Inn and Stables were sold and then used as a hay and corn store. In 1910 the site was leased for use as an abattoir. The Woolpack Inn was demolished in 1931. The site is still in use as an abattoir. Little remains of the original stables.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the Jeremeas Family Album which contains photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by the photographers Stevenson and McNicoll. The photo is of a gable-roofed commercial stables with shingled roofing, and white-washed render to the walls, standing in a large cleared yard. There is a skillion extension to the south-west corner. On the front (northern) wall can be seen a door and three windows, two large and one small paned window in the centre. The eastern window is paned, while the western window has louvres and a pull-out blind. Three S shaped stays can be seen on the northern wall. Along the western wall are two more windows and doors. A mound of hay lies at the north-western corner. Standing at the front of the stables is a group of five men and two boys, one holding a large dog. Four of the men are dressed in workman’s clothing and some are holding tools of their trade. The man at the back is wearing more formal clothes and has distanced himself from the workmen. The pole against which one of the workmen is leaning appears to have damage along one side. This pole may have been used as a hitching post as there is a footrest installed lower down to make mounting easier. Printed On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. Photo. 108 Elizabeth St. Melbourne. This image appears to have been created to depict this good size Agave Americana plant, also known as the 'Century Plant'. Agaves are an introduced species to Australia. Their local propagation in Victoria is mentioned in Victorian newspapers as early as the 1850s. By the 1870s they appear to have become fairly common but still relatively novel. The side by side view of the Holy Trinity Anglican and Saint Andrews Presbyterian Churches forms an interesting frame for this botanical study. Photograph, Old Mechanics Institute Young Street, Bacchus Marsh 1883
A Mechanics Institute in Bacchus Marsh dates from sometime in the 1850s. The foundation stone for this hall dates from 1858. The hall was located on the corner of Young Street and Bennett Street on land donated by James Young. In 1883 a new and larger Mechanics Institute Hall was built in Main Street. The old hall was purchased by Thomas Anderson and for some years was a private residence. It was later bought by the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB) and became a Lodge for that order. In its later years it was known locally as 'The Buff's Hall'. It was eventually demolished in the late 20th century. Built in Young Street on land owned by James Young, a prominent citizen of Bacchus Marsh, this Hall was the venue for the commencement of the political campaign of Alfred Deakin, and later for the campaign of Peter Lalor, a leader of the Eureka Rebellion.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Photograph, Harvest, 1961
At harvest time farmers had relied on itinerant teams of workers descending on the district looking for work. The three Barrie brothers on their adjoining farms combined forces to cut their crop at its optimum time while the weather was in their favour. Up to many 20 workers at times formed a team in earlier times. Agricultural university students were also keen to gain practical experience in the field. Each of the brothers had a particular skill, and Tom Barrie was the expert on stack building. The district haystacks had a distinctive shape and could be recognised by their builder. Map - Chart of Geelong Harbour, Geelong Harbour
When Hamilton Hume and William Hovell arrived at the bay in 1824 they met with the local Wautharong people who referred to the bay as "Jillong" and the surround land "Corayo", but by the time the area was surveyed in the late 1830s the Aboriginal names had been swapped. The names "Corayo" and "Jillong" had since been Anglicised to "Corio" and "Geelong".Corio Bay is an important harbour and leisure location in the West and continues to attract development such as the new Tasmania Ferry Terminal. An Admiralty Chart of Geelong Harbour revised in 1954Geelong Harbour Map Ref: 2731geelong, corio, admiralty charts -

Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Administrative record (item) - Annual report, Clarke & Co. Printers, Forty-Second Annual Report of the Victorian Seamen's Mission, 1899, 1900
The reports were produced and readily distributed annually to a number of organisational stakeholders and included reports from the Committee, Chaplain, extracts of letters, Ladies auxiliary and a list of subscribers. In the Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), Saturday 24 February 1900, page 15: VICTORIAN SEAMEN'S MISSION The annual meeting of the Victorian Seamen's Mission was held in the institute at Port Melbourne last night. There was a fair attendance, the large proportion being ladies, and the chair was occupied by Sir Frederick Sargood MLC. Mr Hugh R Reid, the president of the institute, was also president. The annual report, which was lead and adopted, stated that the Seamen's Institute at Port Melbourne, and also the Sailors' Rest at Williamstown, had sustained their reputation for usefulness and attractiveness. The attendances had been very large at each place and 114 seamen had taken the pledge at the Port Melbourne Institute. Regreat was felt that owing to the preliminary steps having met with opposition in Parliament the building of the long contemplated additional institute near the Melbourne wharves was deferred but the project had not been abandoned. Large parcels of literature had been distributed gratuitiously among ships' crews and the concerts held for the entertainment of seamen had been very successful. The mission had been in existence for over 40 years. It aimed at promoting the temporal and spiritual welfare of seamen. It had been the means of completely eradicating "crimping" and the sailors' "boarding masters" curie, and otherwise removing many of the abuses which still exist in other ports. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, referred to the great benefits which seamen derived from the institute. He was particularly struck by the fact that during the past year close on 2,000 letters had been written by visiting seamen from the institute namely, 1,720 at Port Melbourne, and 261 at Williamstown. It was also a very note-worthy feature, which perhaps the residents of Williamstown might be able to explain that, whilst out of 49,567 attendances at the Port Melbourne institute 114 had taken the pledge there, there was not a single instance on record of the pledge having been taken at the Sailors' Rest, Williamstown, out of 8,218 attendances. (Laughter) Referring to the projected new institute near the wharves, he was amazed to find that its construction had been, according to the report, orefused by some of the labour members. He did not know the details of the matter, but was of opinion that there was no institution more deserving of the support of labour members than the one advocated. In his opinion, the representatives of labour should disown the action of their delegates in Parliament in this matter. (Cheers ) Selections of vocal and instrumental music were given during the evening. These reports were produced annually and include a number of smaller reports from the Executive Committee, Chaplain and auxiliary. They sometimes included photographs and a list of subscribers and amounts pledged. These reports provide an organisational overview as well as many stories of the people who populated the Mission to Seafarers.Handwritten in ink on top right hand corner: "F T Derham [indecipherable]" Handwritten in ink on bottom left hand corner: "Melbourne Sailors' Home"annual report, 1899, victorian seamen's mission, port melbourne, williamstown, sailors' rest, seamen's mission, mission to seafarers, seamen's institute, sailors' home, f.t. derham, reverend ebenezer james, whc darvall, frederick sargood, hugh r. reid, administrative document-annual report -
