This stencil was used as a ship identifier stamp for the transportation of wool bales. Euripides was a transport ship summoned by the Australian government in 1914 to carry soldiers of the Australian Imperial Force and reinforcements to battalions serving in Gallipoli, Egypt, and on the Western Front. The ship continued to carry troops until 1919. During the Second World War Euripides was again summoned by the Australian Government under its new name ‘Akaroa’. Menu for the luncheon held at "Powerhouse" to mark the end of the 1998 National Conference, with entertainment by 'Anything Goes' musicians, and piper Mr Ian McKenzie. The simplicity of the menu (Veal Parmigiana or Roast Pork, and Blackforest dessert) is in marked contrast with menus from the earlier years of Legacy which featured more courses and items described in French, with matching wines. The menu was probably produced and photocopied in-house rather than sent out for printing. Past President Legatee D.J. The President's Fund was created in 1932 by a donation from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. This sheet of accounts was compiled in 1986 to show the income and expenditure over the previous 15 years. Donations continued to come from the Berry Fund and also from the Over 70s Legatees. The over 70s was a group of legatees that met up socially and after their annual meeting they forwarded a cheque to Legacy. Also appears to be donations from legatee Dono Joynt. The expenditure is marked as ANON to protect the identity of the recipients and amounted to $7,600 over the 15 years. The note mentions some of the amounts are estimates. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Origin and Authorisation with many other documents that included correspondence, receipts of donations and material about when money was given to help appropriate cases. The folder was marked with H40 which is part of an early archive project from the late 1960s and early 1970s.The Presidents Fund was a significant help to legatees and junior legatees who were unable to obtain help from other sources.White lined paper with hand written columns of income and expenditure and a note that accompanied the account. The Mistle Thrush is native to Ireland and Scotland, North Africa and parts of Asia. It is known as a large, aggressive and powerful bird. They have several different calls: the main call, given by both sexes, is a dry chattering 'krrrr', louder when the birds are alarmed or excited. There is also a squeaky 'tuk' contact call. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. The Mistle Thrush has a pale grey-brown upperpart and a greyish-white chin. The yellow/buff breast and off-white belly are marked with round black spots. The long tail has white tips on the outer feathers, and the underwing coverts are white. The glass eyes are dark brown and the bill is blackish with a yellow base to the lower mandible. The legs and feet are yellow/brown. There is no plumage differences between the male and the female Mistle Thrush. This is an invitation to George and Annie Rolfe of Lyndoch, Warrnambool, to attend the opening of the first Australian Parliament in Melbourne in May 1901. A smaller invitation card was first sent to the recipients and this larger invitation was sent after the event for the recipients to keep as a souvenir. The six Australian colonies became six Australian States in the newly-formed Commonwealth of Australia in January 1901. George Rolfe (1836-1919), a tea merchant from Melbourne, began buying blocks of land in Warrnambool near the mouth of the Hopkins River in the 1870s. By the early 1880s Rolfe owned 50 acres of land in the town and other nearby pastoral properties. He used the existing building on the land near the mouth of the Hopkins River as holiday accommodation, calling the property Lyndoch and adding stables, bone and chaff sheds, jetty, boathouse, reservoir and windmill and an extensive garden. George Rolfe spent most of his later life at Lyndoch. Today the area is the site of an aged care facility. This certificate is of considerable importance for two reasons: 1. It is an important memento of a signal event in Australia’s history – the Federation of the States in 1901. 2. The certificate was an invitation to George Rolfe of Lyndoch and his wife. Rolfe was a prominent Warrnambool person at that time. This is a piece of cardboard containing an illustration of a young queen in battle dress and on horseback bowing to an image of Britannia. The queen is about to be crowned. There are several lady attendants in the background and two large columns depicted on the sides of the illustration with shields and banners. An extract from Kipling’s poem, The Young Queen, is printed at the bottom of the card. The invitation is coloured in brown, yellow, white and orange tonings. The name of the recipient of the card is handwritten in black ink. The card is slightly scuffed and marked. This is a novel written by Ethel Patricia Stonehouse under the name of Lindsay Russell. She was born in Nhill in 1883 and was educated at Charlton State School. From 1894 on she wrote verse and short stories and worked as a journalist in Melbourne. She published her first novel in Melbourne in 1912 and lived for a time in London where she met Dr John Scott whom she married in 1914. After the First World War she came to live at Mortlake and her novel writing ceased. Most of her novels are about women rebelling –against Catholicism, Calvinism, the English class system and the restraints of marriage. Her railings against the Catholic Church and the oppression of women caused her to be a controversial figure, especially in Mortlake, but she was a popular novelist with one of her books, ‘Smouldering Fires’, selling over 100,000 copies in Australia alone. She died in 1964. No details on the inscription or the recipient of the book, ‘Isie’ have been found. The name, ‘Glasgow’ suggests that the book at some stage was connected with the Glasgow family of Wangoom. They were important local dairy farmers and cheese makers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.This book is of great interest because it was written by an Australian woman and one who lived for many years in Mortlake, a town close to Warrnambool. The connection with the Glasgow family is also of interest. This is a hard cover book of 320 pages. The book has a dark blue cover with gold lettering on the front cover and spine and some gold scroll work on the front cover. The book has a Prologue and 22 chapters and contains advertisements at the front and the back of the book for other books published by Ward, Lock & Co. There is a black and white illustration at the front of the book with a piece of tissue paper covering it. The page at the front of the book that contains an inscription is detached. The inscription and another annotation are written in black ink. The Warrnambool Examiner was founded by John Wilkinson and Richard Osburne in 1851. After a gap of a couple of years Richard Osburne resumed publication in October 1853 and continued until 1867. William Fairfax and Henry Laurie then leased the paper (1867 to 1872) before Richard Osburne again became the proprietor from October 1872 to April 1878 and from December 1879 to December 1880 when publication ceased. Richard Osburne was a pioneer settler in Warrnambool, arriving in 1847. He was prominent in community activities in the town and was a most important early historian, publishing his seminal work, ‘The History of Warrnambool’ in 1887, using the Warrnambool Examiner newspapers to assist with this history. Fairfax and Laurie were the proprietors when the papers described herein were printed. William Fairfax was a member of the Fairfax family which was, and still is, associated with the publication of many Australian newspapers. Henry Laurie later became well-known as a Melbourne University Philosophy Professor. These original newspapers are most important because they contain much information on Warrnambool’s early history and are a primary source for historians. These papers are also of importance because some parts of these papers were not filmed and are not currently available on microfilm. These papers were in a Warrnambool City Council storage area and it is surmised that they have come from the old Warrnambool Museum which no longer exists. These are original copies of the Warrnambool Examiner newspapers from 1st April 1870 to 28th June 1870 and from 1st July 1870 to 30th September 1870.The two sets of papers are bound together with plain cardboard, grey binding and glue. The front cover of the first set is missing. The papers are broadsheets of two pages per copy with printing on both sides. The first page of the copy for 1st April is missing. The pages are tattered on the edges. This card was one of four items given to every family of a deceased soldier of the British Commonwealth. Families received a memorial plaque, a message from the King, a memorial scroll and a "Where Australians Lie" card and grave photograph or a booklet if the deceased has no known grave. This "Where Australians Lie" card was sent to the brother of Pte W. Williams No. 1442, 2nd Battalion AIF, who was killed on Gallipoli on 29th August 1915, aged 24. Walter enlisted age 23 No 1442 on 27.11.1914 in 2nd reinforcements 2nd Bn AIF, embarked for Egypt 11.2.1915, transferred to Stretcher Bearers 8.4.1915, hospital 9.6.1915 with twisted instep, rejoin unit Gallipoli 13.7.1915, KIA 29.8.1915. An example of a British pattern steel battle helmet painted dark Khaki, complete with camouflage netting, chin strap and inner support liner. This is an Australian Army type MK111 steel helmet, standard issue for Australian infantry personnel during WW11 operations. The inside of the helmet is padded with a protective, dense rubber liner and has an adjustable cotton webbing chin strap. Australian manufacture, dated 1942, similar to the British "Brodie" pattern steel helmet originally introduced during WW1. The rim of the helmet is stamped '1942' and is marked number '7'.

This milli-volt meter was manufactured after 1950 and used by the SEC Vic (Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme) from that date until late 1900's. It was used to measure very small voltages associated with the operation of the various Hydro Generators. The readings were able to be shown by the resistor in use in the current circuit. During this time period, high quality testing instruments were either sourced from Europe or England.This milli-volt meter is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it was used by those electrical technicians, who were part of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. An "off spin" from the Scheme was the beginning of an explosion in "human" resources into the Kiewa Valley. This influx of population transformed the region from that of a basically quiet rural region to one which evolved into both industrial and larger residential community. This evolution in the Kiewa Valley created a change, not only in the "physical" landscape(better roads and infrastructure), but also the socio-economic growth within the Valley allowing other "tourist" based industries to expand within the valley and Alpine areas.This millivolts DC meter was used in the 1950's. It is contained in a wooden box and has two coloured (red/black, positive and negative) screw tight knobs which have bake-lite connections. It also has a covered (black tin) view meter marked from zero to 10 millivolts. Underneath this and within a round bake-lite is a small adjustment screw. The top of the box is fastened onto the main structure by six brass screws. Designed by C Douglas Richardson, ‘The Peace of 1919’ medalet was issued by the Defence Department to school children throughout Australia to commemorate the signing of the Versailles Peace Treaty in 1919.One side of the medal features a symbolic female figure of Peace, holding a sword and standing on a plinth marked ‘PEACE 1919’. Behind her flies a dove, and at her left and right feet are two figures freed from their shackles. The reverse features a central panel surrounded by laurel leaves, surmounted by the King’s Crown with the word ‘VICTORY’ over the rays of the rising sun. A sailor and a digger stand at ease on either side of the panel on which is cast ‘THE / TRIUMPH / OF / LIBERTY / AND / JUSTICE’.
