Container - Object, Cane milk bottle basket, 1930-1940
Basket weaving and brush making was a source of income for those who worked in the workshops at RVIB and other institutions in New South Wales and Queensland. A diverse range products could be produced with cane, such as cane chairs, cots, washing baskets and trolleys, and the Institution sought to highlight these in the annual report. Over time the demand for, and supply of, cane changed - particularly during World War 2 when Asian sources were under attack or destroyed. At home, other materials such as plastics as well as the ability to import cheaper pre-produced products further reduced the demand for workshop pieces. A milk bottle basket was designed for milkmen to deliver their wares quickly from door to door, without the bottles impacting upon each other. The milk basket was made in the basket shop of the RVIB for use in the organisation. It was used to carry milk bottles, then containers to the various tea rooms and could have been part of the kitchen equipment for the RVIBCane basket with handle and dividers to carry milk bottlesroyal victorian institute for the blind, equipment, employment -

Audio - Sound recording, A Word from RPH: Richard Burger
RVIB Sheltered Workshop employee Richard Burger discusses the possible redundancies following the news that they would be laid off for a few days. During this time, The Age ran an article advising that workers were dismissed, whereas the Sun and Herald published an article disputing that. Both articles used a senior official at RVIB as a source, which led to those affected feeling unsupported and at risk of losing their jobs. From his point of view, Richard Burger talks about possible theories for the newspaper stories, management of the facility and the nature of the work undertaken in the factory.1 audio recording of an interview between Stephen Jolley and Graeme Innesroyal victorian institute for the blind, richard burger, employment -

Memorabilia, Kevin Findlay and Teddy Bear Theatre tickets
The theatre, set up in the old shire hall, was run by Bill Schooling and Connie Maugham. A World War 1 veteran, Charlie Croft, was the doorman. The films came down by ferry for Saturday nights, or Bill Schooling collected them in his car, which ran on kerosene. In the summertime, there were also screenings on Wednesdays and Fridays. Screenings started with a newsreel; then a travelogue was shown; another support film would be fitted in before interval, then another newsreel, a cartoon, and finally the feature film hit the screen. This occurred during WW2 - 1939-1945HistoricalHandwritten letter written on 26/2/1993 from Kevin Findlay describing his employment history and association with the theatre and a photocopy of 2 tickets for the Teddy Bear Theatre.kevin findlay, teddy bear theatre, bill schooling, connie maugham, charlie croft -
