Document - Memorandum, Future of Legacy
Memo dated 5 January 1973 from R.J.A. Foskett, the President of Melbourne Legacy, to Branch Chairmen and Members of the Board of Management setting up a meeting with them on 22 February 1973 to discuss the future of Legacy nationally. L/ Foskett identifies the following issues to be explored: 1. Admission of WWII men as Legatees 2. Rate of decline in membership 3. Maintenance of the Legacy style of service 4. How to wind up Legacy in the event of that being decided 5. How to perpetuate Legacy if not wound up. Exemplifies the thinking post WWII that the need to care for widows and children would fall away as the children became adults, which is surprising given that the Vietnam War was going on and didn't end until 1975.3 x foolscap photocopied, black on white. The Allied Victory Medal, 1919
The medal is colloquially known as 'Wilfred' within the armed forces. It was decided at the end of WWI that each of the allies should each issue their own bronze victory medal with a similar design, similar equivalent wording and identical ribbon. The British medal was designed by W. McMillan. The front depicts a winged classical figure representing victory. Approximately 5.7 million victory medals were issued, making it more exclusive than the British War Medal. The recipient's service number, rank, name and unit was impressed on the rim.Gold coloured Bronze medal depicting a winged figure of victory on the front and the words THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1919-1919 surrounded by a laurel wreath. Book, Grevillea Grove, 2017
This book was compiled and published in 2017. The contents are based on a scrapbook and photographs compiled by Margaret Kleinitz who was Secretary of the Orbost Garden Club during the time when Grevillea Grove was proposed and developed from1979-1989. The development of this garden in a disused quarry in Orbost involved a substantial community campaign and on-going effort, particularly from members of the Garden Club. The demise of Grevillea Grove came when the Vic. Govt. decided to develop this parcel of crown land for a Rainforest Garden and Information Centre. Local resident, Audrey Van Den Berg has compiled this book. Shows the effort and dedication involved in this community project.A 40 page book with cardboard cover. Front cover has 6 colour photos of Grevillea plants overlaid onto a plan of the Grevillea Grove garden. Functional object - Sundial
"It is believed that the SUNDIAL was constructed by Peter Rawlins for Sister Campbell, and it was originally sited on the North side of the Homestead Tree, near the Cannon. The base was 'faced' with rocks from the shoreline, and the Sundial itself is of a slate material. By the early 90's, the overhead canopy of the surrounding trees, began to overcome the Sundial, and it could not be 'read'. It was decided to move it to a more clear sunny site. The Herb Garden was considered the most suitable site, and the Sundial was picked up by Front End Loader, and placed on its present site in 1992." - C Schulz, 1996, 'SUNDIAL TO HERB GARDEN - PROJECT 21'Bronze dial marker with slate face mounted on granite pillar from Cape Woolamai.churchill island, sister margaret campbell, sundial -

Photograph - Fred Rochow Railways Collection - George Henry Lynch and Jack Anderson, 24 November 1937
The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Driver George Henry Lynch (standing) with Fireman Jack Anderson. This photo was taken the day after the first regular run of the "Spirit of Progress". The Spirit of Progress was the premier express passenger train on the Victorian Railways in Australia, running from Melbourne to the New South Wales border at Albury, and later through to Sydney. From its introduction in November 1937 until April 1962 the train service ran on 1,600 mm (5 ft 3 in) broad gauge line from Melbourne's Spencer Street station to Albury, on the New South Wales / Victorian border, where passengers changed to a New South Wales Government Railways train (the Melbourne Limited Express). Following the completion of the standard gauge line between Melbourne and Albury in April 1962 the Spirit of Progress was extended to Sydney. With declining passenger numbers it was decided to combine the Spirit of Progress and Southern Aurora into one train, the Sydney/Melbourne Express. The Spirit of Progress ran for the last time on 2 August 1986. black and white photograph, first half 20th century
This is a bridge across the Snowy River at Orbost. This bridge was built in the 1920s as a road and rail bridge, and was partly washed away by flood waters in 1934. After the end of the first World War the Victorian Railways considered an extension of the railhead across the river at Orbost, and in 1922 a new timber and steel girder structure, a joint Country Roads Board — Victorian Railways venture, was built and completed at a cost of £41,000 (the steel girders came from the Flinders Street viaduct reconstruction). Subsequently it was decided not to take the railway across the river, and the bridge has only been used by road traffic. This is a pictorial record of an early bridge across the Snowy River at Orbost.A very large black / white photograph under glass in a timber frame. Document - DRAINAGE PROBLEMS - NEW CHUM DRAINAGE PROPOSALS
Six pages of handwritten notes regarding the New Chum Drainage Proposals. Extracts from the Bendigo Advertiser mentioning the rising of the water in the New Chum Mines. An Advertiser report 27/12/1910 mentions that deep mining will have to be abandoned owing to the absence of some proper scheme to cope with the water. An arrangement had been made by which the companies affected along the line should contribute to a scheme. Suggestions made that the water be lifted by electric pumps. Baling with tanks had been tried for 6 months and then abandoned. Directors Report Victoria Reef Quartz Jan 1911 mentions unwatering had been carried on with assistance of Government. On the 20th Dec, one rope gave out. Decided that replacing it and doing the necessary work could not be met in the present financial conditions. It was also considered that the costof trying to reach the bottom reefcut in the New Chum Railway could not be continued by baling as its cost proved too expensive, while it could probably be done economically & effectively by electric pump which is now subject to negotiations with the Mining Dept.' Medal, Jubilee of Canberra 1913-1963
This medal was made by W.J.Amor Mint, a medal making company from New South Wales. It was made to commemorate both the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Canberra in 1963 and the Royal Visit of 1963. Because of the rivalry between the two major Australian cities, Melbourne and Sydney, it was decided to establish a new capital city somewhere between the two cities. The Australian capital Territory was established in 1913 and the American architect, Walter Burley Griffin, in association with his wife, Marion Mahony Griffin, was chosen to design the new city of Canberra. The first Parliament House was opened in 1927 and Melbourne ceased to be the location of the Federal Parliament meetings. This medal is of interest, mainly because it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first Parliament House in Canberra and the establishment of Canberra as Australia's capital city.Circular brass medal with ring attached at the top and a split ring through the ring. The obverse features a raised profile of Queen Elizabeth 11 wearing a crown and text. The reverse depicts old Parliament House, decorative leaves and text.THE ROYAL VISIT OF HM. Costume, Ballarat Teachers' College Blazer, c1950
This blazer was worn by Joyce Murphy at the Ballarat Teacher's College. David van Leeuwen decided not to have a blazer as he was older, and thought it too much like school days. He attended the Ballarat Teachers' College when 27 years, after serving in the army. Because he didn’t have a blazer he didn’t have anywhere to put the colours so he offered them to Joyce Murphy as they were going out together. There should have been a football embroidery as well, but Joyce Murphy didn’t want that on her blazer because it was too boyish. Gift of Joyce van Leeuwen nee Joyce Murphy, 2014A blue woollen blazer with pocket featuring the Ballarat Teachers' College logo, sports colours, and representation in tennis, basketball and hockey. The pocket is a dual one. Joyce van Leeuwen remembers: 'Towards the end of our College year, were were given written authorisation denoting our sporting teams, to take to Paterson & Powell for embroidery on our blazer pockets. On my pocket, the hockey sticks, the BB for basketball, as netball was then called, all mine. The tennis racquet is David's [van Leeuwen], as is the braid topping the pocket denoting the College colours. College colours were authorised for excellence in a chosen sport, and in our year, 1950, only two men's colours were awarded - David's for basketball and Neil Trezise's for football. Port of Echuca
A coloured rectangular photograph, 03/04/1984
Adelaide had been displayed in the Hopwood Gardens from 1960. In 1984 The City of Echuca decided to put the paddle steamer back in the river. This happened over several weeks and involved digging a boat ramp into the bank in front of the Hopwood Gardens. This involved a lot of skill and people. It also attracted a lot of attention. Crowds gathered every day to watch the task. In this photograph the P.S Pevensey in the foreground still has the name P.S Philadelphia writing on its name plate. The P.S Pevensey was used in the TV Series 'All The Rivers Run', as the P.S Philadelphia. Relates to a series of images Reg. nos. P000059.3, P000061.3, P000062.2, P000063.3, P000070.2, P000071. Statement of Significance The re-floating of the P.S Adelaide is significant because it occurred at a time when the Tourist Industry was gathering momentum in Echuca. The City of Echuca made the decision to add another paddle steamer to its fleet to carry passengers on the Murray River. The P.S Adelaide is one of the oldest, still operative wooden hulled paddle steamers in the world. It celebrated it's 150th birthday in July 2016. The re-floating of the P.S Adelaide created a lot of attention locally and regionally.A colour negative, photograph and enlargement of the re-launching of the P.S Adelaide in 1984. Also that the municipality be represented by a symbolic floral float in the Royal pageant. This was a striking entry and won first prize, and evoked much comment on account of its originality and truly Australian motif." The instant we agree to destruction and conflict, we ourselves have lost the freedom and peace to live a healthy and prosperous life by giving all out hear to the cause of war.
