The cemetery pictured is the Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol, United Kingdom. There are multiple crosses marking graves in this photograph, all marked in memory of different soldiers who fought with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) during World War I. It is believed that the soldier who is kneeling was also part of the Australian Imperial Force. This can be inferred by the chevron rank insignia visible on the uniform. The placement of this insignia on the sleeve of the right arm suggests that this soldier was either a Warrant Officer or a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). Another signifier of the Australian Imperial Force uniform are the three inverted chevron stripes positioned on the lower part of the left sleeve, near the wrist. These are called Good Conduct Stripes and were worn by Warrant Officers and NCOs. This patch consisted of a single chevron stripe for each year of military service meeting certain requirements of good conduct. Additionally, the man in this photograph is also wearing a 'Rising Sun' collar badge on his coat. Australia, unlike most other Commonwealth countries, did not adopt metal regimental badges during the First World War. All units were issued with the Australian Army General Service Badge, better known as the 'Rising Sun’ badge. This insignia is almost always identified with the Australian Imperial Force. Furthermore, the grave that this unidentified soldier is kneeling next to is the resting place of Private John James (J. J.) Simpson. He was born in Stanley, Victoria in 1883. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Melbourne, Victoria on 12 July, 1915, with the service number 4909. John James Simpson was then posted to the 60th Company Depot at Seymour for military recruit training. John James Simpson was reported wounded in action in France on 19 July, 1916. He was admitted to 13th General Hospital, France with gunshot wounds to his legs. From Boulogne, France, he traveled to the United Kingdom aboard the Hospital Ship 'St. Denis' for medical care. Upon arrival, he was admitted to 2nd Southern General Hospital, Bristol, England on 27 July, 1916. John James Simpson passed away from his wounds on 1 August, 1916. Small, hammered silver coin with a portrait of a male head ...This coin was the first shilling minted during the reign of King James I of England (James VI of Scotland), being produced from 1603 to1604. Born on the 19 June 1566, James became King James VI of Scotland at a little over twelve months of age, on the abdication of his mother Mary Queen of Scots. He succeeded to the English Throne as James I on the death of the childless Queen Elizabeth I on 24 March 1603. He was crowned on 25 July 1603, ruling over a united England, Scotland and Wales for 22 years until his death in 1625 at the age of 58.Small, hammered silver coin with a portrait of a male head facing to the right and a value of XII (12) stamped to the left of the portrait. There is an inscription stamped around the perimeter of the coin, which also shows a Thistle mintmark. The reverse side of the coin shows a shield (centred) divided into four sections. The journal contains cuttings from the Warrnambool Standard and other newspapers and other printed material, mostly from the 1906-1908 years with some cuttings from the 1930s. These cuttings therefore mostly concern Vidler's activities in Warrnambool - his involvement with the Warrnambool and District Progress League and the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures He was actively concerned with the establishment of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill and the Nestles Factory at Dennington , produced the key historical publication, Warrnambool Past and Present, Sixty Years of Progress 1847-1907 and was the person responsible for the production of the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board with its portraits of 204 male pioneers of Warrnambool and District. This journal is of great significance as it contains important information, hitherto unknown, about the life and work of Edward Vidler. a key figure in the early 20th century history and development of Warrnambool and district.This is a collection of newspaper cuttings, letters, reports, leaflets, flyers etc. inserted into a bound journal, quarto size. The cover, made of composite material, is black with gold printing on the front cover.
