In 1848, when it was published in London as a guide to prospective emigrants, 23,904 people left the United Kingdom for the Australian colonies and New Zealand. In 1847, with the failure of potato crops threatening famine in Ireland and growing political unrest at home, the British Government had once again encouraged emigration by offering free passage to candidates of 'good character'. Immigration, particularly by the labouring classes, was intended to relieve both the overburdened Mother Country and the colonies which had acute labour shortages. The booklet gives some history of each colony as well as the sale of lands, mines and mining, produce, the price of living, wages and, generally, the situation. The Norman Oliver collection. Norman Oliver was three times Mayor of Bendigo - 1950-51, 1964-65, 1970-71. Two copies of seven pages of typed notes for a campaign speech in the Victorian state election 1955. Oliver was standing as a Country Party candidate for a seat in the Legislative Assembly. This speech appears to have been given on 3BO as it begins 'Good afternoon, listeners ..'and asks for their vote 'next Saturday'. He replies to criticism that he is anti-working class, his education plans for Bendigo, agricultural science and trade, Bendigo's housing shortage, road policies, drainage issues with the Bendigo Creek. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH Australia enrolled its first PhD candidate in 1995 and during 1996 focused on attracting increasing numbers of students. In 1996, three candidates were enrolled through VIOSH Australia.They were John Culvenor, Geoffrey Dell and Thomas Mitchell. All had Prof Dennis Else as their supervisor. Previously, Geoffrey Dell was in Intake 7, 1985, Occupational Hazard Management. Geoffrey Dell's topic was "Airline Baggage Handler Back Injuries - Causes and Prevention." "The aim of this study is to investigate the work practises and operational systems used by baggage handlers in a range of airlines, worldwide. Where possible the investigation will include an epidemiological study of baggage handler back injury occurrence in those airlines. The information gathered will provide an understanding of back injury causation modes, and will focus attention on the specific tasks for which engineering solutions should be sought. Engineering solutions identified will be subject to controlled trial, to confirm their validity." This led to the construction of a full scale plywood baggage compartment model and a partnership with Ballarat University's School of Human Movement and Sports Science. Three different loading systems were tested. Qantas baggage handlers travelled to Ballarat University to fill the human frame of the investigation. The photographs show this aspect of the research. In 1997, Geoffrey Dell was awarded the Eric Wigglesworth Prize. The Loyal Orange Institution of Victoria was established in 1843. As a society composed of Protestants, it works to support and defend the Protestant faith. The Institution is named in honour of King William III, Prince of Orange (1650-1702) and his achievements for civil and religious liberty. The first Orange Lodge in Victoria was founded in 1843, following a sectarian protest in Elizabeth Street Melbourne over the election of a Protestant candidate to the Legislative Council. By the 1890s there were 169 branches in Victoria, engaged in political lobbying for mainstream Protestant issues like temperance, Sunday observance, opposition to state aid for church schools, and opposition to any expansion of the political influence of Roman Catholics. The monthly meetings had an element of secrecy, as members wore regalia and followed a simple ritual. No Catholics could join. Albert E. WILLIAMS (1899-1986) Born Victoria, Australia Albert Edward Williams was among the first to undertake the five-year, Technical Art Teacher’s Certificate (TATC) at the Ballarat Technical Art School in 1915, with work placement at the Ballarat Lithographic company. Williams taught for several years before he was selected to undertake further teacher training at the Working Men’s College, Melbourne, in 1926. He returned to teach at Ballarat in 1928, facilitating many student activities, while pursuing the arduous Art Teacher’s Certificate. From its inception in 1914, it was 30 years before the first candidate achieved the certificate’s exhaustive requirements. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. In World War 2 Legatee Baker joined the RAAF and served with the No 3 Squadron in the Middle East from 1940-43. Also in the South West Pacific area. He joined Legacy in 1967 on the nomination of Legatees Jock McAuley and Ted Savage. The newspaper clipping shows his wife, Jean Baker, ran as the Liberal candidate for Bundroora, clipping is incomplete and the year is unknown. Newspaper Clipping from "The Post", Wednesday, August 4, 1993. "Bash attack on businessman"'.A local restaurateur and council candidate received abrasions and bruises after a vicious attack by two men at his pizza restaurant on Sunday morning. Joe Cassari, who is standing in Ringwood's North Ward was assaulted and the front window of his shop smashed after he asked two men to leave. Mr Cossari's nephew called the police immediately the fight started, but they had to call again 20 minutes later when they still hadn't arrived. The police said they had another job to go to.

Catherine Helen Spence (31 October 1825 – 3 April 1910) was a Scottish-born Australian author, teacher, journalist, politician and leading suffragette. Her family moved to South Australia in 1839. In 1897 she became Australia's first female political candidate after standing (unsuccessfully) for the Federal Convention held in Adelaide. Given the epitaph "Grand Old Woman of Australasia", Spence was commemorated on the Australian 5 dollar note issued for the Centenary of Federation of Australia. She was one of the prime movers, with C. Emily Clark (sister of John Howard Clark), of the "Boarding-out Society". This organization had as its aim the placing of destitute children, who would otherwise be sent to "Industrial School", into approved families. Welch was voted to the chair. The candidate, who was well received, explained his views on municipal matters. His remarks were received with favor, and were frequently applauded. The Nillumbik Festival was introduced as a replacement for the Eltham Festival following the disbandment of Eltham Shire Council in December 1994 and the creation of Nillumbik Shire Council. It was an attempt to draw away from Eltham and be more inclusive of the wider communities in Nillumbik. However other local communities had their own festivals and the concept of a Nillumbik Festival was never widely accepted by the community and it shortly reverted back to the Eltham Fesitval in 1997. This medal is one of only a few medals donated by a group of generous gentlemen as tokens of their appreciation of the talent and industry of high achieving students in the years 1869 - 1870. The 1869 College annual report states that this examination, which granted entry into Melbourne University, was held in Ballarat for the first time in 1869. Candidates had to pass in at least six of the nine possible subjects in order to pass. Charles Henderson (born 3/02/1856) was the eldest son of the Rev. William Henderson of St Anderw's Kirk, Ballarat, distinguished founder of Ballarat College. Charles was only the third student enrolled at Ballarat College in July 1864. The Ballarat College annual report 1869 states the medal was awarded in appreciation of his 'success in passing so creditably the Matriculation examination at the age of thirteen years'. This medal has historic significance because it dates from the first decade of the history of the College. It has social significance because the recipient was the third student enrolled at Ballarat College, the eldest son of the founder of the College. The medal is unique and is one of only a few privately donated between 1869-1870 by a group of gentlemen affiliated with the college.This gold-plated round-shaped medal has front embossed with Minerva head, name of school and school motto. The rear of the medal is inscribed with names of medal donors. There is a straight metal pin hinged to the right side of the rear of the medal. There is a small catch attached to left side of the rear of the medal. The side edge of the medal is inscribed with name of the recipient and title of the award. The medal is housed in a rectangular cardboard box and nestled in cotton wool.The box has a blue lid and white base.Embossed around inner edge of medal front "Studiis Claritudo Venit. Nominated in March 1834 as a candidate for the Wesleyan Methodist ministry. Appointed preacher on probation to the Charteris circuit. Married Sarah Webb in September 1835, ordained 7 October 1835, sailed for Australia on 13 October 1835. Served at Parramatta, where his wife died on 16 February 1838. Married Elizabeth Shelley (1808 - 1866) daughter of William Shelley, formerly a missionary in Tonga and Tahiti in July 1939. Served in N.S.W., Victoria and South Australia. Elected President of the 1859 Conference. Granted leave in 1865 to return to England as the Australian representative to the British Conference.
