Boyd argues that modern architecture has triggered a necessity for greater harmony between architects and engineers. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga It is one of many souvenirs produced to represent landmarks in the Albury-Wodonga district. The Albury and District War Memorial was opened on Anzac Day 1925 by General Paine. Designed by the Architect Louis Harrison, the site was chosen by the town planner Charles Reade. The monument is a white ferro concrete tower, in the form of a tapered lighthouse painted stark white and surmounted by a 'torch of liberty'. This torch is 1.8 meters high and faced with 40 panes of prismatic glass. During the day sunlight plays through this glazing giving the torch the illusion it is lit.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. This blazer was worn by Joyce Murphy at the Ballarat Teacher's College. David van Leeuwen decided not to have a blazer as he was older, and thought it too much like school days. He attended the Ballarat Teachers' College when 27 years, after serving in the army. Because he didn’t have a blazer he didn’t have anywhere to put the colours so he offered them to Joyce Murphy as they were going out together. There should have been a football embroidery as well, but Joyce Murphy didn’t want that on her blazer because it was too boyish. The tennis racquet is David's [van Leeuwen], as is the braid topping the pocket denoting the College colours. College colours were authorised for excellence in a chosen sport, and in our year, 1950, only two men's colours were awarded - David's for basketball and Neil Trezise's for football. Margaret Jukes (nee McWilliams) married Alfred Meredith Jukes in Melbourne in 1853 and they moved to Warrnambool in 1856. She and Alfred had nine children one of whom died in infancy and four who died in young adulthood. Margaret was widowed in 1872, the year of the birth of their youngest child. A report of her funeral service in the Parish Record notes her "aged and much honored life". The hymns chosen "all were in quiet harmony with the remembrance of one whose daily life was an example and who held always a given trust in the over-ruling providence of God". It records the "peaceful closing of a well spent life".The Jukes name is associated with Jukes Street in East Warrnambool, and with the property named "Belvedere" in Ferguson Street, East Warrnambool. This medal was made by W.J.Amor Mint, a medal making company from New South Wales. It was made to commemorate both the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Canberra in 1963 and the Royal Visit of 1963. Because of the rivalry between the two major Australian cities, Melbourne and Sydney, it was decided to establish a new capital city somewhere between the two cities. The Australian capital Territory was established in 1913 and the American architect, Walter Burley Griffin, in association with his wife, Marion Mahony Griffin, was chosen to design the new city of Canberra. Bridesmaid Dress worn by Joyce Suto (nee Baker) ( a member of the Society) as a bridesmaid at the wedding of her schoolfriend Derri Thomas to Derek Whitfield at Tidenham, Glous, U.K., in April, 1947. Bridesmaid dresses were made of an early kind of nylon with 'cap sleeves' and the material was bought with meagre supply of clothing coupons during postwar clothes rationing. Bridesmaids carried daffodils, irises and pussy-willow. 'Cap sleeves' chosen by the bride were a comparatively new fashion feature and not popular with the bridesmaid. A Legacy widow, Beryl Billing, with two school girls from Siena College and a lot of loose letters. Six school girls came to Legacy house to meet the weekly gathering of the stamp ladies. They had chosen Legacy as a cause they wanted to help and decided to collect stamps, they donated over 5,000 stamps. The widows clubs have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. It raises funds and provides a purpose for gathering together. Beryl Billings was the co-ordinator of the stamp sorting for many years. Nobel Industries Limited was founded in 1870 by Swedish chemist and industrialist Alfred Nobel for the production of the new explosive dynamite in the United Kingdom. Ardeer, on the coast at Ayrshire, was chosen for the company's first factory. Between 1877 amd 1926 it was known as Nobel’s Explosives Company Limited. The business later diversified into the production of blasting gelatine, gelignite, ballistite, guncotton, and cordite. At its peak, the factory employed nearly 13,000 men and women. In 1926, the firm merged with Brunner, Mond & Company, the United Alkali Company, and the British Dyestuffs Corporation, creating a new group, Imperial Chemical Industries, then one of Britain's largest firms. At the beginning of the 1890s, the Kew businessman and Town Councillor, Henry Kellett, commissioned J.F.C. Farquhar to photograph scenes of Kew. These scenes included panoramas as well as pastoral scenes. The resulting set of twelve photographs was assembled in an album, Kew Where We Live, from which customers could select images for purchase.The preamble to the album describes that the photographs used the ‘argentic bromide’ process, now more commonly known as the gelatine silver process. This form of dry plate photography allowed for the negatives to be kept for weeks before processing, hence its value in landscape photography. The resulting images were considered to be finely grained and everlasting. Evidence of the success of Henry Kellett’s venture can be seen today, in that some of the photographs are held in national collections.It is believed that the Kew Historical Society’s copy of the Kellett album is unique and that the photographs in the book were the first copies taken from the original plates. It is the first and most important series of images produced about Kew. The individual images have proved essential in identifying buildings and places of heritage value in the district.When the Kew Lunatic Asylum was opened in 1871, its extensive 340 acres of grounds were intended for farming, agriculture and recreation for the inmates. The point-of-view chosen by Farquhar for this panoramic photograph focuses on the ordered open fields, haystacks and remnant trees that extended from the foreground to the rear of the Asylum. The inmates are the absent players in this pastoral idyll. In 1891, The Argus reported on the Annual Asylum Picnic: “Wednesday saw the Kew picnic, the yearly festival of the mad folks and their keepers. Once a year the public subscribes for cakes and ale for all these mad folks, and their keepers, from superintendent to lowest wardsman, turn out, and use their best endeavours to make one day in the year sanely merry.” Regardless of such merriment, the Asylum’s development and ongoing status were frequently a source of disquiet to the residents of Kew, who regularly petitioned the State Government for its removal. The City of Warrnambool Rowing Club (CoWRC) received a grant from the Warrnambool City Council Community Development Fund for the project: to hold a public event to install a plaque – dedicated to members and ex members who enlisted in WW1. The original honor roll had been lost to history. The date chosen was August 7 as this was 100 years since the death of a particular member, Major Thomas (Tom) Redford. Process: the Club wrote a book about its 140 year history and learnt of the honor roll. Every effort to find it was exhausted. The Club applied for funds to produce a replacement plaque and have a public event to unveil it. The hospital was first mooted in 1853. The first site chosen was "Hospital Hill" between Rowan and Mackenzie Streets and behind the present Lister House School of Nursing. The first building was a primitive affair of slab and weatherboard daubed with clay somewhere near the middle of the present Short St - which at the time extended to the brow of the hill behind the Sacred Heart Cathedral site. The new building was greatly need to serve the hundreds of diggers then active on the field. Messrs Vahland and Gezchmann, Architects, designed a new building of stone and brick, the cenre portion of the hospital to hold 100 beds. This centre portion cost 12,000 pounds and was erected in three months. Montmorillonite is a type of clay composed of aluminium silicate that forms very small particles that are not well-bonded to one another. This is why it is so soft. When in the presence of water, all types of clay swell. Montmorillonite swells even more than most types of clay, which is why it is often chosen over other types of clay in its practical uses. Montmorillonite has many different practical uses, including in the mining industry, as a soil additive, as a sealant, as a desiccant to draw water out of the air, to clean ponds, to make kitty litter and in cosmetics. Montmorillonite is a common mineral and, despite being named after Montmorillon, France, can be found all over the world, including many deposits in Australia. It is not known where this particular specimen originates from. Montmorillonite is an economically and socially significant material with a wide variety of uses. Having samples of common and important minerals allows collections, like the Burke Museum, to have a more complete view of the land on which they are located, and therefore a more complete view of heritage. This specimen is part of a larger collection of geological and mineral specimens collected from around Australia (and some parts of the world) and donated to the Burke Museum between 1868-1880. A large percentage of these specimens were collected in Victoria as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria that begun in 1852 (in response to the Gold Rush) to study and map the geology of Victoria. Collecting geological specimens was an important part of mapping and understanding the scientific makeup of the earth. This is a photo of the "Queen Competition", probably the best remembered entertainment of the 1930's. Four local lasses were chosen to represent the following: Bellfield Hotel, Grampians House, The Cricket Club and the Grampians Mountains. When the long awaited evening came each Queen and her attendants paraded through the hall, the results were announced and the winner (who this year was Valerie Evans) took her place on a throne erected in the middle of the stage. The other Queens made their way to thrones on either side of her. The audience were treated to a right royal display as the "Bishop" placed a crown on the winner's head. Much merriment followed including a play, with students dressed as Minnie and Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. For the names of the people in the photo refer to "Bridging the Gap" by Ida Stanton, p.88. The photo shows a group of people arranged on and below a dais. There is a woman dressed as royalty sitting on a throne in the centre, flanked by a man dressed as a bishop on the left and a man dressed as a courtier on the right. There are two young girls in long white dresses wearing flowered bands in their hair standing in front of the men. There are more girls in white dresses and flower bands along both sided of the dais and two youths wearing ruffle fronted shirts and holding batons/walking sticks(?) at the front of each row of girls. Empire Day celebrations were held from 1908-1912. Prior to the opening of the railway in 1893 the only public transport to Surrey Hills was the Melbourne-Lilydale horse coach which travelled to Surrey Hills down Victoria Street and Mont Albert Road. The fare to Union Road was 9 pence. Photo 16-4a was the number given to the original print provided by the State Savings Bank. Ken Hall made a negative from it, and the reprint of this was given the number 1459. This number was chosen as the catalogue number to avoid confusion with SHP4a. The Queen's Baton Relay has been the traditional curtain-raiser to the Commonwealth Games since 1958. It symbolises the gathering of people from across the Commonwealth. On 14 March 2005 Her Majesty placed a message in the baton at Buckingham Palace, signalling the start of a journey of almost 180,000 kilometres. The baton's journey to the opening ceremony took exactly one year and one day, arriving at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the opening ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games on 15 March 2006. It was the first baton relay to visit all 71 nations of the Commonwealth. Athletes and non-athletes alike shared the privilege of carrying the baton. In Bendigo two sites were chosen for events. Slide photographs of two Stanhope residents prepared to go to the ball held in honour of Princess Alexandra's visit to Melbourne in 1959. The ball was held at the Melbourne Town Hall. Elizabeth Brown (on the right) was a resident at Stanhope after her father died in 1953 and she came to Melbourne from Seymour to compete further studies at Toorak Teachers College. She was chosen to present a bouquet to Princess Alexandra at the Royal Ball. Elizabeth wore a pink taffeta gown and was accompanied by a Legacy boy, Julian Hyde. The handwritten note implies it is the visit of the Queen Mother, but it was a ball held to welcome Princess Alexandra in September 1959. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. This apron was designed for the Ballarat Apron Festival by local designer Clare Schreenan of Clasch Designs Ballarat. The tartan fabric was designed by Art Gallery of Ballarat for the 2014 exhibition “For Auld Lang Syne: Images of Scottish Australia, from the First Fleet to Federation”, and is officially registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans. The colours are highly significant: grey being chosen for the basalt plains on which Ballarat is built upon; Blue and white representing the Eureka Flag; and yellow for the gold that has made Ballarat so famous. Born in Ballarat, Schreenan attended Loreto College before studying fashion at Melbourne College of Textiles. She has worked extensively in Sydney, travelling to Paris, London and Los Angeles for work projects. She returned to Ballarat in 2006, launching Clash Design. Featuring the official, highly symbolic Ballarat tartan, and made by highly renowned local designer Clare Schreenan, this contemporary apron is of local significance to the Ballarat community.
