The '5-4-20' denotes a minimum of five nurses for twenty patients in a general medical or surgical ward. During this period, staffing ratios were secured as part of bargaining negotiations between unions and employer groups. After decades of campaigning from the ANF/ANMF, ratios were legislated for the public sector in Victoria with the passing of the Safe Patient Care (Nurse to Patient and Midwife to Patient) Bill in 2015. This campaign was featured in ANF Victorian Branch newsletters from late 2003 to early 2004. Entitled the '5-4-20 campaign', it was officially launched on 19 November 2003. Advertisements and shirts from the time featured the slogan, '5 nurses for 20 patients. Nothing less!' along with the ANF logo and illustrations by The Age cartoonist Ron Tandberg. Badge campaigning against the Victorian Liberal government's widespread privatisation of the public health service (and other public services) in the 1990s, which resulted in job cuts and site closures throughout the state. The Australian Nursing Federation, the union representing nurses in Victoria, was a strong opponent of these cuts and closures, that resulted in pressure applied on an already overstretched and poorly resourced group of workers. "In a context of high unemployment and an ideological commitment to small government, there were widespread job losses and people affixed stickers to their cars saying 'I've been Jeffed', i.e. made redundant. The cuts were not confined to government employees and many staff of private enterprises also lost their jobs. This was the era of the 'consulting poor' as professional staff struggled to make a living as independent consultants, rather than employees. A large group photo of wounded men and nurses at Mena Hospital in Cairo. The men had been evacuated from Gallipoli. From the inscription on the reverse it appears it was donated by Mrs A Pitt. Her husband was Private William James Pitt, service number 1285. His war record can be viewed in the National Archive. He had been wounded at Gallipoli and treated at the 2nd Australian General Hospital in Mena House in Cairo in May 1915 where this photo was taken. This photo can be found in other places, including the AWM archive. Was with other photos of World War One that had been mounted on board. The founding legatees all served in World War One so these photos would have been of significant places for them. The Vivian Bullwinkel Veterans and Families Wellbeing Centre on the 3rd floor of Legacy House was opened on the 13 April 2021. It provides the veterans and their families a safe haven to access essential support services such as advocacy, case management and referral pathways whilst inviting them to relax within a 'club' like environment equipped with lounging and children's play areas, and both kitchen and bathroom facilities. It was named in honour of an Australian Army nurse who was the lone survivor of the Bangka Island massacre, and who dedicated her life to nursing. all nurses at the Alfred Hospital were required to use these boxes to send uniforms to laundry, also all hospital staff who had uniforms supplied. (from previous catalogue): All nursing staff wore hospital supplied uniforms for much of the twentieth century. The Royal Melbourne Hospital ran the 'Central Linen Service' for during this time - doing all the laundry for all the public hospitals in Melbourne. Staff uniforms were laundered separately, everyone had their own numbered laundry case. Staff also had a small printed docket book with duplicate copies (complete with a piece of carbon paper) and the number of uniform items were detailed when the case was sent off to the laundry. The ribbon is a souvenir of the first 'Australia Day', held 30 July 1915. This was not the celebration of nationhood as we know it today, but a national fundraising effort during World War I. Across Australia, this day was set aside for fundraising to assist wounded soldiers returning to Australia during WWI. In Linton Australia Day 1915 was celebrated with a jumble sale, raffles, and the collection of donations. There was also a stall outside the Shire Offices, attended by a group of girls dressed as Red Cross nurses, which sold flowers, postcards, toys and souvenirs. Mrs Surman, then Stella Todd, was one of this group of girls, along with her sister Millie Todd. (See photograph, Registration no. 055.) The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". Memories compiled by Peter Rosewall; who attended the last NDSN school PTS 108 between 1986 - 89.Six typed pages about the Kerrigan family from Mildura. Four of the siblings trained from 1970. He performed on the University's historic Erard Grand Concert piano on stage in Founders Hall, describing it as "absolutely amazing.' The instrument was 93 years old and hadn't been played for more than eighty years. An audience of 500 were entertained with pieces by Schubert and Bach for the first half of the program and Waltzes, Mazurkas, and Polonaises by Chopin after the interval. Fittingly an encore of the Minuet in G by Paderewski was played on the very piano the composer had brought from England for his Australian tour in 1906. *'The Merry Wives of Windsor' by William Shakespeare; directed by Beth Child; designer Damian Muller; Production by Third Year Graduating Company, University of Ballarat Performing Arts Department. Performed by twenty-eight second year Performing Arts students with Nadia Andary in the lead role of Lola,, Grant Hickey as Henry Seekamp the Ballarat Times editor who receives a whipping from Lola for his criticism of her. Tim Haymes is the character Smith, Karissa Clarke plays nurse Jane Oliver and Ross Larkin plays soldier Daniel Brady. Other cast members were Luke Doxey, Richard Di Gregorio, Chris Stipic and Brendan Mayne. A feature of the show is Lola's celebrated Spider Dance which was acknowledged many years ago by the crowd throwing gold nuggets onto the stage. It features a cast of 30 and music from a 15 piece band. Photo depicts three cast members: Keith Miles, Adam Lubicz and Glenn Quinn. It was performed in America in 1944 and tells the story of three sailors who arrive in New York on 24-hour shore leave. It was performed at Founder's Hall, University of Ballarat, Mount Helen campus. It was an original show devised and written by Second Year SMB Performing Arts students. following their sold-out touring show 'unplugged' and Book Week play 'SapceDust'. This photograph was taken on the first 'Australia Day', held 30 July 1915. Across Australia, this day was set aside for a nation-wide fundraising effort for the Patriotic Relief Fund, raising money to assist wounded soldiers returning to Australia during WWI. Other days had been set aside to raise funds for specific nations, e.g. 'Belgian Day' had been held earlier in 1915.. In Linton Australia Day 1915 was celebrated with a jumble sale, raffles, and collection of donations. There was also a stall near the Shire Offices, attended by a group of girls dressed as Red Cross nurses, which sold flowers, postcards, toys etc. People identified in photograph: Standing slightly behind the group - Mr Smith (Alf J. Smith, Grenville Shire Secretary). L-R, standing: Kathleen Nicol, Violet Smith, Jean Gascoigne, Elva Ball, Miss Barry, Millie Todd, Effie Gascoigne, Stella Todd, unnamed.
