This collection was compiled by Peter Fagg who worked as a scientist with the Department of Sustainability and Environment (now DELWP) to study dieback in eucalypts. He specialised in the silviculture of the eucalypt forest types of South-East Australia for most of his 40-year career, which started with the Forests Commission Victoria. He was in Orbost from 1968 - 1973. The contents of the book are all related to sporting groups in Orbost at the Mechanics Hall. Peter Fagg was the Publicity Officer for the group as well as president. He was also associated with the Orbost municipal bands.This item is related to Peter Fagg, a prominent member of the Orbost community. The item is a record of sporting activities in Orbost.A hard-covered book with a green spine and a green thatched cover. Hall designed by H G French erected by E Cowlishew, seated 350, lit with acetylene light, opened with a grand ball 26 September 1907. Later altered, bio-box added to show films. Hall was drastically altered in 1962, demolished 1998. This book of illustrated copies of The Graphic, a London weekly newspaper, was once part of the book collection of the Warrnambool Mechanics Institute and Free Library, Warrnambool.Book, titled “The Graphic”, Jan 2nd to June 25th 1904, Volume 69 (LXIX). Large, hard covered, book, dark green. Book’s cover has the textured appearance of crocodile skin. The spine and corners are bound in leather. The book holds issues of a weekly London illustrated newspaper. It once belonged to The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute and Free Library (their accession number 6661). The Mechanics Institute movement began in Scotland in the early 1800's with the goal of providing classes for the working classes. In 1854 a group was formed in Bendigo to establish a Mechanics Institute. By 1856 the first permanent building was established in McCrae Street and included a free library. Initially it provided classes in drawing, arithmetic and book-keeping. The MI supported the establishment of a School of Design in 1871. A separate School of Mines began classes in 1873 initially using the MI building.
