This book has been part of a library that had been set up by the radio station 3YB in Warrnambool. This station was founded in 1936 from a Mobile Radio Station formed by Jack Young of Ballarat (hence the letter, YB). 3YB sponsored a Boys’ Club in the late 1930s and 1940s and a library for the boys was part of this sponsorship. This book is of minor interest because it was part of the library connected to the Everyboys Club established in the late 1930s by the Warrnamboool Radio Station 3YB. The subject matter of the book, an account of the aviation exploits in the South Pacific region of the well-known aviator, P. G. Taylor, would have appealed to young boys at that time. This is a hard cover book of 262 pages. The cover is blue but the colour on the spine has faded to a brown shade. There is some black lettering on the spine and also a small library sticker with the number ‘31’ on it. The book has outline maps on the inside of both covers, a Foreword, a Contents page, a List of Illustrations, fifteen Chapters of Text and an Epilogue. There are many black and white photographs and illustrations scattered throughout the text. The man in the photograph is John McGrath who regularly travelled to Bulla from Essendon to catch rabbits, which he sold at the market. He made a compact mobile refrigeration unit to keep the rabbits fresh in transit. His invention resulted in larger companies in Australia adopting the use of refrigerated trailers to transport perishables. Motorola introduced the Bag Phone in 1988. These phones offered more durability and higher power output (up to 3 watts) than more conventional mobile phones of the time. Bag Phones were expensive to purchase and operate. They became available within the Department in the early 1990s but their use was very restricted to staff like fire communications duty officers. Senior regional managers also had bag phones. Bag Phones were also bulky and heavy and were often known as "The Brick". The 12 volt sealed lead-acid rechargeable battery provided up to 2.5 hours of talk time and 48 hours of standby time. They were replaced from the mid 1990s by smaller, analogue flip-phones with lighter Nicad batteries manufactured by companies like Nokia. This type of mobile spring weighing scales were in high use before legislative Weights and Measure standards where in force throughout Australia. This was in a time when a "mans word and handshake" was his legal document. It was a time, especially in rural areas that the term "she'll be right" was extensively used and these types of scales (the accuracy over time) would produce a near "enough is good enough" measure. These scales are very significant for the rural produce within the Kiewa Valley. Rural produce such as hay milk and butter tubs,tobacco bundles could be easily weighed (in relatively smaller packages) for both markets and for use within the valley.This spring scale (!/2 Once to 4lb) was used as general weight scale. Because it is spring loaded the accuracy would fade over time and by over weighted loads. The spring enclosure is made from cast iron painter black. There is an iron ring at the top (attaching/holding) and an iron hook at the bottom (holding). This water bottle was carried by stretcher bearers in the Light Horse Field Ambulance. The cup/cap was used to give a drink to a wounded soldier who could not hold a water bottle to his lips. A light horse field ambulance was an Australian World War I military unit whose purpose was to provide medical transport and aid to the wounded and sick soldiers of an Australian Light Horse brigade. Typically a Lieutenant Colonel commanded each ambulance. All officers of the ambulance were medical doctors or surgeons. Dental units were often attached to the ambulance as well. A Field Ambulance consisted of two sections, the Mobile and the Immobile. The Mobile Section travel with its brigade into combat, where it would establish a Dressing Station. It use stretchers or carts to retrieve the wounded and transport them to the Dressing Station. The Immobile Section established and operated a Receiving Station, which received the wounded the Dressing Station sent on. The ambulance's surgeons would operate on the wounded at the Receiving Station. From the Receiving Station, the sick and wounded would go first to the Casualty Clearing Station and ultimately to a Base Hospital. Photo taken on the day of the Wattle's removal from the River Yarra by two mobile cranes, the vessel is suspended above the river. A very significant moment in the life of the Wattle as this was the first day of the major restoration project that continues from 2009 through 2012 aiming to finish in mid 2013. Prior to this restoration project there was a long lead up to find funding and resources to restore the Wattle and ensure that Wattle was not scrapped. This "homemade rake" is constructed from a branch of a tea tree. This item demonstrates that in the mid to late 1800's the isolation of the Kiewa Valley was more pronounced than during the early 1900's. The availability of gardening implements to the residences within the Kiewa Valley was scarce to non existence. with the upgrading of roads into the valley and the boost to the Valley's population (S.E.C. Kiewa Valley Hydro Electricity Scheme) transport into the valley, firstly via commercial Hawkers in their mobile caravans and later by commercial trucks. This "home made" rake is very significant because it highlights the ingenuity of local farmers and graziers in overcoming the semi isolation of the Kiewa Valley and its regions from the commercial availability of gardening implements enjoyed by gardeners in the towns and cities of the 1800's and the early 1900's. This "home made" garden rake highlights the ingenuity of the "Australian" character per se. A slice of this ingenuity can be seen by the amount of inventions, per capita, produced within Australia throughout its history.Handle is a long, stripped branch of tea tree. The head of the rake is a 2.3 cm. wide piece of wood, compressed between two 0.5 cm. pieces of metal joined with bolts, nuts and rivets. Gold Fever illuminates Drury Lane walkway entrance to Bridge Street Mall. The multiple metal forms act like mobiles suspended from the wall line out into the centre of the walkway. The flexing motion of the rolled metal and traffic reflectors wrapped on the ends creates movement and reflections in the laneway. This movement follows a pricing graph for gold from 1851 to 2011. This Hewlett Packard 43120A monitor defribulator electro cardiograph equipment was trialled around 1981/1982 to Gren Sylvester at the Ambulance Officer Training Centre. Having proved successful, it was introduced to non-MICA (Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance) ambulances in Victoria. It was used successfully for at least 15 years and was noted for its reliability and also for its ability to keep working after being dropped. It was later replaced by lighter equipment. This booklet was produced by the 3 YB radio station in Warrnambool as a fund raiser for the Warrnambool Hospital. The three people on the front cover are: Christine Benbow, Oscar Henry and Ken Warne. The recipes in this booklet were sent into the radio program "Piano Time". The radio station 3 YB began in January 1936. Its origins were in the mobile van unit established by Ballarat radio announcer Jack Young. Today 3YB is operated by ACE Radio. The Warrnambool Hospital was established in 1854 as the Warrnambool and District Hospital and Benevolent Asylum and is today known as South West Healthcare Warrnambool Campus. This booklet is of some interest as an example of the cookery books produced in the mid 20th century by 3 YB Warrnambool.This is a soft covered booklet of 34 pages. The back cover and possibly some pages are missing and the front cover is loose. The booklet was bound with metal staples but now has a plastic clip. This raker/jointer/guage set is a sharpening tool for cross cut logging saws. The logging saws used in the early 1900's for the clearing of forests required constant sharpening of their "cutting teeth". The logging of forested areas during these times was very much a "hands on" method of either one or two men by the use of saw or hand axe. Chain saws, chain and ball(clearing) and bulldozing methods came in the mid 1900's.This particular saw sharpening method was used by surveyors laying down boundaries for the S.E.C. Victoria Hydro Electricity Scheme (1920's). This item was given to a local Kiewa Valley lad who accompanied the initial surveyors. The lad was responsible for the tendering and feeding of the surveyors "pack horses". Surveys during this period and in the dense mountainous terrain of the Victorian Alps was both exhausting and hazardous. Overnight accommodation at various log cabins was not always possible and swag/tent alternative was the "fall back" This raker/jointer saw sharpener was made in the USA (DISSTON) from cast and flat iron. The main body has been painted in orange. It has three adjustment screws on the top horizontal bar and one bolt on(adjusting) leveling platform on the bottom. The small size and weight of this saw sharpener was ideal for the travelling/mobile logger or surveyor(as in this case). The main frame resembles two towers connected by two horizontal bars and the top of the towers has a horizontal bar with adjustment screws.
