Bendigo TAFE
Reference, 14/10/1942
This is a reference written on 14th October, 1942, by the Head of the Art Department at the School of Mines and Industries Bendigo, Ernest H. Duncan, for a former pupil, Miss Ivy Jack. It is a complimentary reference assuring 'To Whom it May Concern' that Miss Jack 'is a fine type of girl possessing many fine qualities...' and that she has '...proved herself an energetic, careful and reliable student with ability in Dressmaking above the average.'This is significant in relation to the history of the Bendigo School of Mines and Industries. It gives an insight into the type of courses being offered by the school in 1942, as well as an insight into how references for individuals were written in the 1940's, as opposed to the way they are written in 2013. This significance has been assessed in-house.White paper photocopy of reference from Ernest H. Headwear - Viet Cong helmet
Helmet of a type worn by soldiers the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, commonly known by Australians as the Vietcong, was an armed communist political organization in South Vietnam and Cambodia. Its military force, the Liberation Army of South Vietnam, fought against the United States and South Vietnamese governments during the Vietnam War, eventually emerging on the winning side. The LASV had both guerrilla and regular army units, as well as a network of cadres who organized peasants in the territory the Việt Cộng controlled. During the war, communist insurgents and anti-war activists insisted the Việt Cộng was an insurgency indigenous to the South, while the U.S. and South Vietnamese governments portrayed the group as a tool of North Vietnam. The helmet usually had a waterproof cover often with camouflage scrim.Representative if the uniform of the guerrilla forces opposing Australian forces in Vietnam.Sun helmet with red star mounted centre front.military, helmet, vietnam, vietnam war, guerrilla -

Correspondence (Rose Park), 1940s
These are four letters and a document regarding the proposal in the 1940s by the Victorian Department of Lands and Survey to acquire sections of the property, Rose Park, to establish several Soldier Settlement farms. Rose Park, near Willatook, was owned by Stan Baulch (1897-1980), the son of Samuel and Eliza Baulch. Samuel Baulch had acquired the property of Dunmore, between Macarthur and Hawkesdale, in 1893 and Stan had inherited portion of this property after his father’s death. He named his portion Rose Park. The Soldier Settlement Commission wanted to acquire 1500 acres of Rose Park but Stan Baulch argued successfully that the management of his farm could not withstand the loss of so much land and eventually 300 acres of Rose Park land was sold for closer settlement. Stan Baulch was a prominent member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for many years and contributed many articles and booklets on local historical matters. This correspondence is of interest as an example of the establishment of Soldier Settlement farms in Victoria post World War Two and the difficulties faced by some property owners opposed to the acquisition of their land. These items will be useful for research. .1 A six-page letter written in pencil .2 A two page letter in black typing ( contents as in .1 above) .3 A one page letter, typed, with a handwritten signature .4 A sheet of paper containing a statement re purchase of land with some inserted handwritten material .5 A two page letter with handwritten material baulch family, western district, victoria, history of warrnambool -

Illuminated Address
The names come from a variety of areas, from as far away as Glenmaggie, and may reflect who contributed a set sum for a presentation. Appears to have originally been framed. Fritz Horstman was first chair of the Upper Maffra Co-operative Butter and Cheese Factory in 1904.An important example of a locally-produced Illuminated address, as opposed to those of a more grandiose nature that were purchased from "outside".Illuminated address, unframed, presented Dec 1885 to Fritz Horstman, following his representing residents in the Maffra Shire for seven years. Book, Alan Wilkinson, Dissent or conform? war, peace, and the English churches, 1900-1945, 1986
Dissent or Conform examines how churches reacted to, and were affected by, two world wars. Its underlying theme, however, is how the Church can be a creatively dissenting community, focusing on how easily the church can turn into a conforming community that only encourages the occurrence of uncreative dissenters, the ones who criticize the power without offering solutions and leading to a real change. -- Wilkinson opposes this trait of the church, especially given the impact that it has on society as a messenger of the gospel. To this end, the author depicts religious groups during three periods of time: English Nonconformity before and during WWI, pacifists and pacifiers between the two wars and Christianity during WWII, focusing on how church history interacts with the developments in history and society. -- This book is of particular interest to social and church historians of the 20th century, and to all interested in the history and ethics of war and pacifism. It will also appeal to those attracted by the interaction between church and society.Index, notes, p.361.non-fictionDissent or Conform examines how churches reacted to, and were affected by, two world wars. Book, Allen & Unwin, The forgotten few : 77 RAAF Squadron in Korea, 2008
In June 1950, No 77 squadron RAAF was in Japan and packing up to go home when North Korea invaded South Korea. Instead of going home to Australia, they found themselves with their mustang fighters in Korea as part of the UN forces opposing the rampaging North Koreans who occupied almost the whole peninsular within 8 weeks of the start of the invasion. The squadron played a major role in halting the invasion and driving the Koreans back almost to the Chinese border. Then the Chinese, equipped with their MIG 21 jet fighters, entered the war. The hopelessly outclassed mustangs were quickly replaced by meteor jet fighters to again play a major role in resisting the invasion forces. The squadron lost over 20 pilots over the course of the war, but succeeded in shooting down a number of MIG fighters and offering ground support to the UN forces. This is an action packed account of the men of that squadron.Index, bib, ill, map, p.234.non-fictionIn June 1950, No 77 squadron RAAF was in Japan and packing up to go home when North Korea invaded South Korea. Equipment - Schimmelbusch anaesthetic mask, Mid 20th Century
The Schimmelbusch mask is an open breathing system for delivering an anesthetic. The device was invented by Curt Schimmelbusch in 1889, and was used until the 1950s (though it is still applied in some developing countries). The device consists of a wire frame which is covered with several beds of gauze and applied to the patient's face over the mouth and nose. Then high-volatility anesthetic (usually diethyl ether or halothane, and historically chloroform) is dripped on it, allowing the patient to inhale a mix of the evaporated anesthetic and air. The device is designed to prevent the anesthetic from coming in contact with the patient's skin, where it can cause irritation. This model differs from the others in that the mask's handle is attached to the mask, as opposed to the spring. The chloroform cloth was possibly held in place by the clamp, instead of a spring. Schimmelbusch anasthetic mask, made of Stainless steel. This mask was used with chloroform cloth. Missing spring. In the dark and uncertain days of 1941 and 1942, when Rommel's tanks were sweeping towards Suez, a handful of daring raiders were making history for the Allies. They operated deep behind the German lines, often driving hundreds of miles through the deserts of North Africa. They hid by day and struck by night, destroying aircraft, blowing up ammunition dumps, derailing trains, and killing many times their own number. These were the SAS, Stirling's desert raiders, the brainchild of a deceptively mild-mannered man with a brilliant idea. Small teams of resourceful, highly trained men would penetrate beyond the front lines of the opposing armies and wreak havoc where the Germans least expected it.Index, ill, p.352.non-fictionIn the dark and uncertain days of 1941 and 1942, when Rommel's tanks were sweeping towards Suez, a handful of daring raiders were making history for the Allies. Badge - RAN Bridging Train Collar Badge, Circa 1914/15
The 1st Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train (1st RANBT) was formed in Melbourne on 28 February 1915 and was intended to be a horse drawn engineering unit attached to the Royal Naval Division (RND), then serving as infantry on the Western Front. The term ‘train’, in its title, was a direct reference to the horse drawn wagons that would, in theory, form and move ‘in train’ to carry the unit’s heavy lumber, building materials and engineering equipment to the front. The unit was manned by members of the Royal Australian Naval Reserve for whom there were no available billets in seagoing RAN ships. Many of the sailors serving in the 1st RANBT were rated ‘drivers’, and again, this refers to wagon drivers as opposed to motor vehicle drivers. Other seamen were rated as ‘artificers’ or ‘sappers’, the latter being a military term traditionally used to describe army engineers. Appointed in command of the 1st RANBT was Lieutenant Commander Leighton Seymour Bracegirdle, RAN. Bracegirdle was ideally suited to command the unit, having seen active service with the NSW Naval Brigade during the Boxer Rebellion in China as well as serving as a military officer in the South African Irregular Horse during the Boer War in 1901. He had also recently returned from German New Guinea where he had served as a staff officer in the joint Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) responsible for the capture of the German colonies in the Pacific in September 1914. Three hundred naval reservists, including 50 men who had recently served in New Guinea, were selected for the 1st RANBT and they began their training in horsemanship, engineering and pontoon bridging at the Domain in Melbourne. By late May 1915 a decision was made to send the unit to Britain to complete its training and then to join the RND on the Western Front. The plan, however, never eventuated. The complaints about the non-combatant work being done by the men had been raised in Federal Parliament and following consultation with the senior Australian officer in the Middle East, Lieutenant General Sir Harry Chauvel, a recommendation was made that the unit be disbanded and its men used as reinforcements for the AIF. Consequently, Lieutenant Commander Bracegirdle was advised that his unit was to be dispersed; its men transferring to the AIF or being returned to Australia for discharge. On 27 March 1917 the 1st RANBT was officially disbanded.Oxidised brass anchor shaped collar badge.ww1, world war 1, first world war, ranbt, ran bridging train, royal australian navy bridging train, collar badge -

Plan - Subdivision Plan, Kew Golf Links Estate, 1936
The Kew Golf Links Estate was a major subdivision in North Kew. It derived its title due to the land being previously occupied by the Kew Golf Club, which transferred its course to a number of locations before occupying its current site. The Plan advertises 180 choice home sites. The street names are somewhat different today as those on the map are named after the proposed Kodak Factory to be built on the site. The subdivision of the Kew Golf Links Estate was a major subdivision of farmland in Kew. The site was at one stage designated for industrial development and the building of a new Kodak factory. The decision by Council to oppose the redevelopment makes the beginning of the period when all industrial development was banned in Kew.Monochrome printed, folded subdivision plan for the Kew Golf Links Estate, to be auctioned on 7 November 1936.
