The Officer in Uniform was Major Phil Chapman OC of 15th Transport Sqd based in Bendigo in the old Passchendaele Barracks depot in Mollison Street where the Battle Honour board was held. The other in civilian clothes is Cliff Richards who was Junior Vice President of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch at the time. The photo relates to the Board being donated to the Bendigo RSL Museum in the SMI building in January 1999. The 38th Battalion AIF was known as Bendigo's own, raised in Bendigo in 1916 for service in the Great War. Due to its size it was placed high up in what was the Billiard Room in the Museum. After a major renovation to the BDRSL Inc Club in Havilah Rd in 2013 it was then placed over the foyer front entrance. Due to another up grade it was placed in storage for awhile and is now on display in the rear foyer patrons entrance. These two bottles were found by workmen building a new retaining wall on the north side of the Les O’Callaghan History House building in Gilles Street Warrnambool. The wall replaced one damaged beyond repair following a car accident in 2019. The building was erected in 1889 as the caretaker’s cottage in the Warrnambool Sea Baths complex (for most of its existence it had two swimming pools, a hot sea water baths building and a caretaker’s cottage). The water in the baths were pumped up from the ocean and, for the hot baths, heated on site. These baths were the municipal baths until the mid 1950s. The bottles may have originated from the one of the families residing in the cottage or from passers-by in the adjoining Merri Street or from patrons of the baths. They appear to be over 100 years old but there is no way the ownership of the bottles can be established.These bottles are of interest as archeological finds after repair works to the Les O’Callaghan History House. .1 A dark green (or black?) glass bottle with a hollowed out concave base, no stopper and a slightly chipped rim on the top. A photo of a large group of teenage boys and men from Big Camp, January 1970. Big camp was for older junior Legatees. One of the men appears to be Sir Rohan Delacombe, the Governor of Victoria and patron of Legacy (fourth from the left centre road). Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It came from an envelope with other Big camp photos. The Legacy envelope was marked "P5 Power House" in red pen, and Box 15 in blue pen. Speeches printed after a dinner to honour Legatee Stan Savige. The dinner on Saturday 4 November 1939 was held to celebrate Brigadier Savige's appointment to Command the 17th Infantry Brigade, 6th Division, 2nd AIF. The speeches were given by Legatee Eric Russell as Legacy President in 1939, Sir John Gellibrand and a response by Stan Savige. The introduction by Legatee Russell mentions that Legacy Patron, Sir John Gellibrand 'had the inspiration which caused the Legacy movement' and Stan Savige was revered as the Founder of Legacy. Savige's response includes that he received the inspiration from Gellibrand in a letter (not as is commonly related that he visited Hobart). Savige's subsequent exploits in WWII are detailed in Chapter 4 of 'There goes a man' by W.B. Report of a dinner held just after the beginning of WWII to celebrate the work of Sir Stanley Savige in establishing Legacy. Legatee Russell (President) introduced their patron, Sir John Gellibrand, who proposed the toast to Sir Stanley Savige. In his response Sir Stanley Savige outlined the history of Legacy to that date and how he was able to bring together so many Legatees with a common purpose to look after the dependants of WWI veterans. He said that although this need would disappear due to natural causes by the 1950s, the present war would ensure that the work of Legacy would continue. He highlighted the opposition of the Board of Management to affording the same opportunities to girls as those given to boys, and how it was got past. This photograph shows the "lay back" atmosphere enjoyed in a small country town in the 1940s to the 1950s. Two women and a young boy basking in the warmth of the sun. The unsealed drive way and cars parked close to the entrance was typical of small towns during this period. Open doors and shady trees provided sufficient cooling for most sunny days. The wooden barrel next to the outside wall shows that storage space within the hotel was limited and that metal aluminium barrels had not been in existence. This photograph was taken at a time when children and women had limited access to the major drinking and entertainment facilities within a hotel(pub). Legal drinking age was for patrons 21 years and older and no strict dress codes where applied. The hotel bar was not open on Sundays (God fearing) and opening time restrictions were in place. "In transit" clients were given some leniency when staying in small country hotels as strict liquor laws This photograph presents a window to a life in the 1940s to 1950s, of a small town in the Kiewa Valley. It covers a period when the local hotel or "pub" was the meeting point for local men and women to talk about local events and life in general. It was also a point where "locals' had the first opportunity to meet new arrivals and converse with tourists and "through traffic". The importance of "face to face" verbal communication was a critical part of community life and interaction. Medlow was built in 1889 for Col Cairncross and named 'Willcyrus' after his sons William and Cyril. The Cairncross family was responsible for the planting of many of the trees, some sourced from Canada by one of the Cairncross sons. The date is approximate. The Bull family lived at 'Medlow' at 42 Warrigal Road, Surrey Hills from 1911. Dr Richard Bull graduated MD, BS in 1904. He was a lecturer in bacteriology during WW1 and developed typhoid vaccines. He was President of the British Medical Association (BMA), forerunner to the AMA, in 1926. Dr Bull's wife Catherine (nee Perrier) was a lover and patron of music and the arts. Their daughter Norma was a well-known artist. Mrs Bull was a great lover of music and the arts and made 'Medlow' available for the advance of these causes. The Black and White committee started in 1936 to raise funds for the children supported by the Sydney Industrial Blind Institute (later Royal Blind Society of NSW) through a variety of events. One such major fundraiser was a Ball, initially began as the White Ball then changed to Black and White Ball in 1948. Ball programs were created to provide opportunity for sponsors to advertise their involvement with this prestigious event, as well include information on the time progression of the night, a menu, a list of the current committee (Patron, President, various positions and members) and the Black and White Derby race sheet. First run in 1956, the Derby gave individuals or businesses the opportunity to sponsor a 'horse' in the race, which was ridden by a 'jockey' who rolled up a line to reach the finish post. This is a glass cup which has been painted and etched at the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. This exhibition lasted three months and was staged at the Liebig/Timor Streets intersection at the Warrnambool Town Hall and Council buildings with some temporary buildings added for the occasion. It was reported that 70,000 people visited the displays, attended the concerts and entered the competitions. John Villiers, a Warrnambool painter and decorator with a glassware and chinaware shop in Liebig Street, had a stall at the Exhibition. He brought from Melbourne a glass etcher who etched glass souvenirs such as this one for patrons of the Exhibition. It was the first time that glass etching had been done in Warrnambool. Alice McConnell was born in 1885 in Warrnambool to Robert McConnell and Matilda Russell so she was about 11 or 12 at the time of the Exhibition. She died at the age of 17 in Warrnambool. Her father was possibly the proprietor of the R. and J. McConnell livery stables which later became a transport company in Warrnambool.This glass is most significant because it is one of the few surviving souvenirs of the important Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. It is also a memento of Alice McConnell, the owner of the glass, who died at the young age of 17. The item comes from the estate of Ken Wooles who was a descendant of the Wooles family prominent in Warrnambool as monumental masons. He was also related to the McConnell family on his mother’s side of the familyThis is a glass cup with a handle. In 1955 the Polish Community in Chile wanted to Commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the ending of the 2nd World War but, since it was not a happy occasion, as Poland had been betrayed and placed in the Soviet sphere of influence, they chose to create a Pennant with a plea for the Patron Icon of Eastern Poland - Our Lady of the Sharp/Morning Gate (Matka Boska Ostrobramska/Zaranna) in Vilnius (Wilno) - to give them a new Miracle on the Vistula, in reference to an epic battle which took place on 15th August 1922 on the banks of the Vistula (Wisla) River in which the Polish troops defeated the Soviet Army and turned back the march of Communism to the West. This particular Pennant was purchased by Stanislawa Zamecznik (nee Zakrzewska), while living in Chile after deportation from her birth place in Sianozatki near Bychov (Bychow) to Schweningen in Germany from which they emigrated to South America as Displaced Persons. This map was produced by Richard Francis Tunley and given to the Victorian Braille Library for use by it's patrons. Mr Tunley was a prolific Braille map maker as well as producing other items for blind and vision impaired children, advocated for compulsory education for blind and deaf children and established the Queensland Braille Map and Model Club. Leading by example, his maps were treasured by those who used them and were an outstanding piece of craftsmanship. In this example, the metal cylinder sits on a wooden base and can be turned via a handle in the wooden top or rotating the sides. A brailled red metal plate occupies the bottom third, and large continents have a metal plate, cut to shape, upon which braille country/continent names are placed. Newspaper articles about the Christmas Party held at Government House in 1960. One is from The Age on 12 December 1960 and two from The Herald on the same day. Melbourne Legacy would hold Christmas parties for junior Legatees at Government House for many years due to the Governor of Victoria being patron of Legacy. Two photos show the Governor Sir Dallas Brooks the reins of a miniature mail coach drawn by two small ponies. Sitting with the Governor is 10 year old Sandra Fitzpatrick of Moe. Children would come from all over Victoria. Two other photos show archery with the Kew City Bowman providing instruction of archery to the children. Judith Berry was instructing Ken Barberis 8 years old. Also a photo is of Mickey Hodder, 11, of Lower Templestowe and Ivy Murray, 5, of Box Hill. The articles were cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings. View from Grace Mitchell's shop at the corner of Mount Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace Mitchell was probably best known for her Eltham shop at the corner of Mt Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace's memories covered many local identities who were patrons of her shop between 1954 and 1971. From the elevated position of her shop and home Grace was able to view a varied passing parade of Eltham events from ERSILAC, Easter and Eltham Festival parades passing on their way to Eltham Lower Park, circuses in Wingrove Park (then Bremner’s Reserve), roadworks and other happenings. Bremner's Reserve was renamed Wingrove Park c.1970 This photo was from a series of images presented by Grace Mitchell at a Society talk 10 March 1993 on the theme of “My Eltham”. Alistair Knox had one of the first VW Beetles in Eltham; perhaps the one shown is his. This model has a large rear window, first introduced in 1958. The Holden ute could be an FC or FE. Hugh Gray was the son of Charles Gray and Robina Tait. Hugh was born on 7 January 1810 at Alloa Clackmananshire, Scotland, and married Elizabeth Paterson on 8 July 1831 at Glascow, Scotland. Hugh, Elizabeth and their eight children boarded the 'Borneuf' and set sail for Australia from Glasgow on 20 May 1852. In October 1853 Hugh Gray set up a blacksmiths forge on Main Road Ballarat. He was a member of the Ballarat Reform League. In July 1857 he donated 5 pounds to the Humffray Testimonial on behalf of the Blacksmith Association. In 1858 and 1877 he was the President of the Caledonian Society, and a committee member at other times. Gray was also one of the first promoters of the Mechanics' Institute. On 14 March 1869 Hugh Gray started the Philosophical Association of Ballarat. Hugh Gray died on 02 June 1880. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with camps on the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring, close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Including at two other camps in the Somers area: Lord Somers Camp and the Somers School Camp (owned by the Education Department). It came from an envelope with other Big camp photos. The Legacy envelope was marked "P5 Power House" in red pen, and Box 15 in blue pen. At the top of the shield is a Lions International symbol consisting of two lions heads facing outwards either side of the words 'Lions International' and the letter 'L' in between them. At the base of the shield is a blue and gold coloured badge, consisting of two rifles crossed in front of the RVIB lighthouse, with the words 'Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind Rifle Club' around the outside. Between the two symbols is engraved "In memory of the late George Glover Past President-Lions Club of Bennettswood - Patron and Life Member of the R.V.I.B. Rifle Club. George developed and donated equipment in order that the blind may enjoy rifle shooting and compete with others. His work done will continue to serve." In the 1960's, the RVIB approached engineer George Glover to produce equipment to allow blind people to shoot, based upon that made available at St Dunstan's Hospital in the UK. The rifle range opened in February 1966 at the rear of St Kilda Road with 30 members, and soon became involved in matches with sighted rifle clubs in the area. Dr. Dai Davies presented this Goblet as a gift to the Faculty as the first appointed Burnell-Jose visiting Professor, Postgraduate Committee in Medicine, S.A. May - June 1976. At the time, Dr Davies was the Consultant Anaesthetist St George's Hospital, London and during this event was elected to Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthestists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. The Burnell-Jose Visiting Professorship commenced in Adelaide in 1975 in honor of Mary Burnell, the first woman Dean of the Faculty from 1966 to 1967 and the first woman President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists in 1955. Very few women had assumed major anesthesia roles in the world during this period. The Goblet's provenance is supported by an original booklet, which certifies its origin from Chichester Cathedral (1075), Sussex, England. In 1975, a limited edition of 600 goblets were commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Chichester Cathedral, Reverend Walter Hussey, to commemorate the ninth century of the Foundation. This Goblet is number 46 of the edition and the booklet is signed by Walter Hussey. The Goblet is historically associated with Chichester Cathedral and Walter Hussey, who was a great patron of the arts during the 1970's.Solid silver, with pure gold overlaying the modeled stem and interior of the cup. Trefoil shaped goblet cup with tapering profile. The stem is supported by a sheaf of wheat and bird design. The goblet came in its own case with a booklet of authenticity. David Clarke (Head Teacher) and his sister, Catherine are standing in the centre of the group. Built with stone walls and wooden shingles on the roof. This was the first State School building which was built in 1856 and replaced with a new building in 1875 after the stone walls collapsed outwards.
