This cap would have been worn by a student nurse in her third year of training as in the first year her cap had no arrows. Prior to the transfer of nursing education to the university sector, nurses were trained in a course of instruction in hospital nursing schools that awarded a certificate in general nursing. These courses were generally for a three-year period, and nurses were paid employees of the parent hospital. In Melbourne after WW11 because individual hospitals couldn't get enough nursing students a school of nursing was established - The Royal Melbourne and Associated Hospitals School of Nursing.A white cotton cap which draws up at the back with string to form a frill. The photograph, created in 1998, is a copy of the original one, depicting a nurse in uniform at the Mental Hospital in Beechworth, with a fern house behind her. In the background, the two-storey building is in view, along with the covered walkway. The institution had to operate with serious shortage of female nurses for long periods of time. During the 1880s, small houses (cottages) were built to offer accommodation for the nurses living in the hospital and in 1937 began the construction of a nurses` hostel. In 1962 the upper level of the Nurses` Home was converted into a Nurses` Training School. The Mayday Hills Hospital was constructed between 1864 and 1867, with buildings created in a number of periods. It formally opened on 24 October 1867 and, along with the Ovens Hospital and the Benevolent Asylum, made Beechworth a prominent social welfare centre in Victoria. The need for an institution of this kind was arisen due to the increased number of people with mental disturbances (induced by the harsh living conditions on the goldfields) and the remoteness of the district from Melbourne. The two-storey buildings, designed in Italianate style, and the three-storey towers at the front, were influenced by the asylum at Colney Hatch in England. Large masses of granite were excavated for its foundation and around 250 workmen were employed for its construction. The building, divided into six sections, was comprised of dormitories, doctors` rooms and plenty ancillary rooms and facilities, such as laundries, reading rooms, a concert hall and cooking areas. The site was chosen for its panoramic view of the countryside, the hilltop atmosphere and the native fauna, all contributing to the cure of patients. The Hospital was originally named the “Ovens Lunatic Asylum” but, during the centenary celebrations in 1967, the name was officially changed to “Mayday Hills Hospital”, showing the gradual shift in the perception and understanding of mental health conditions over the last decades. The Hospital lies on the traditional land of the Kulin Nation.This photograph is historically significant as it provides an insight into the everyday life of staff living within the walls of the Mayday Hills Hospital. This is Item 9 of 27 items in the Daisy Vickers collection of World War One memorabilia. These items were sent or given to Daisy Ogier (nee Vickers) during World War One by Corporal Arthur Anderson who enlisted from Warrnambool in 1915 at the age of 21. He served in Egypt and France and returned to Australia in 1919. Daisy Ogier (1907-1987) was a student and then a teacher at Warrnambool Technical School with her early teaching years there from 1925 to 1936 and in 1949. She became the head mistress from 1950 to 1963 and in 1968. She officially retired in 1976. Daisy Vickers was one of the best loved and dedicated teachers that the school ever had. This is a Warrnambool High School cap from the 1930s. Warrnambool High School was established in 1907 with a farm site in Merrivale and it was also in several sites in the main town area, with the longest occupancy in Hyland Street. In 1961 the school moved to its present location in Albert Park (Grafton Road). The High School amalgamated with Warrnambool North Technical School in 1995 to form Warrnambool College. Malcolm Goodall, the owner of the cap, was born in 1917 and died in 2010. He lived in Coulstock Street and he worked in the tinning department of Nestles. The Goodall family has been in the Warrnambool area since the mid 1850s including being at the farm, ‘Wanstead’ in East Warrnambool and at Framlingham in the 19th century where William Goodall was the manager of the aboriginal settlement. This cap is of interest as an example of the boys’ uniform at Warrnambool High School in the 1930s and as a memento of Malcolm Goodall. His ancestors were pioneers in the Warrnambool district.This is a boy’s cap made of dark green cloth with octagonal sections and a cloth button on top. The peak is edged with navy and cream cord. The centre front of the cap has a school badge with the school initials and motto. These two hats and school tie were once part of the uniform for girls at Warrnambool Technical School. This school was established in 1913 in Timor Street, Warrnambool with the first Principal being John King. From this school evolved the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education which itself was subsumed into the present day Deakin University campus at Sherwood Park in Warrnambool. The Timor Street site is now the location of South West College of TAFE. The WarrnamboolTechnical School moved from Timor Street to its present-day site in Caramut Road Warrnambool in 1973 and was re-named Brauer College in 1990 after Alfred Brauer, a Warrnambool doctor and a prominent school patron. This folder of text and photographic memorabilia relating to Robert Wilson Baxter (1935py) is a fascinating record of this former student's service and ultimate sacrifice for his country. Robert Baxter was awarded the George Medal on the 28th July 1942 for heroism in rescuing a fellow crewman from the burning wreck of their aircraft. The Medal was received by his family after Robert's death on 7th August 1942 as a result of an accident while taking off on operations. Robert Baxter's father, also Robert Wilson Baxter, was a Ballarat businessman who purchased the Ballarat Star Newspaper in 1897, selling it to the Courier in 1924. He was also part of Baxter and Stubbs Pty. Ltd. (Printers). Robert's mother attended Mrs Kennedy's School for Girls. Items in the folder have historical significance as they document the service and sacrifice of a RAAF sergeant during World War Two. This extraordinary record of the student cohort in 1908 reveals many aspects of school life in the early 1900's. The fashions, hair coiffure and accessories and added costuming are fascinating. The sport detail from the basketball hoop is significant. This photograph has social significance because of its detail regarding female school activities in the early 1900s. Instituted in 1914, the Military Cross (MC) was issued for gallantry in presence of the enemy to warrant and junior officers of the Army who were ineligible (on account of their rank) for the Distinguished Service Order. During the First World War, it was also available to equivalent ranks in the Royal Naval Division and Royal Marines and it later became available to equivalent ranks in the RAF for acts of gallantry on land. The equivalent award for the other ranks for gallantry on land in presence of the enemy was the Military Medal (MM) which had been instituted in 1916 and, similarly to the MC, later became available to RAF other ranks serving on the ground. This medal was awared to Pte H. S Holgate for bravery in the field in 1917. Pte Holgate was killed in action at Zonnebeke 11 October 1917. The ring was the property of Valerie Dale who attended CPLC in the 1930's. It was donated to the school by her daughter in 2012. The ring is the first of its type to be returned to the school. Discharged from the RAN June 1987. Re Enlist 1996 and did a refresher course and posted to HMAS Success Fleet Tanker then HMAS Brisbane till 2001. Posted to HMAS Kuttabul with Recurring Back Injury and Discharged from the RAN May 2002. Total 21 years service with 17 off at Sea.1. These ribbons were worn on the Clarendon Ladies College (CLC) uniform summer and winter hat. The CLC accessories were worn in the 1900 - 1910 era. After 1920 the school changed its name to Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College and the crest reflected ths change. Prior to the early 1900s students wore dark skirts and white blouses and ribbon ties. Formal photographs taken at Speech Night saw the girls in frilled and lace white dresses.
