This sign points has two different messages. The first states Public Works Office, which was operational in Victoria between 1855 and 1987 dealt with many aspects of the states infrastructure. It had many different reponsibilities and roles from building government accommodation and fit out of buildings, licences for unused roads and water ways, main roads and bridges, ports and harbour,and water supplies. Much of this work was managed through local offices such as the one at Warrnambool. The sign on the reverse which states Witnesses Waiting Room relates to the court house which is where this sign originated.The Warrnambool court house was built in 1870-71 by the Victorian Public Works department and it is possible that this sign relates to that period.It is one of a number of public buildings built in the period 1870-1890 including the Police station and stables and police quarters, the Post Office and drill Hall , all in the same vicinity. This building reflects the growth of the town and also the importance it held at the time from a state level. The building while no longer used as a court house is a building of significance to Warrnambool as well as to the state of Victoria, being one of six around the state which were built in free classical style. This is the probate and will of John Hannon of the Anakies. John Hannon died in March 1874. Anakie is a small town between Geelong and Bacchus Marsh and the Anakies are three small hills in the nearby Brisbane Ranges National Park. Nothing is known of John Bannon except for the details in the will and probate. He was unable to read and write, signing his will with a cross and he was a small handholder having property valued at under £300. He left his estate to his wife Johanna and her family. It originally came from Thomas Goodall, a legal clerk in the office of lawyer Ernest Chambers who passed it on to George Mackay, the lawyer in the forerunner firm of the legal firm of Mackay Taylor. The document came the buildings that previously housed the firm of Mackay Taylor. This is a piece of parchment folded in two and joined at the fold by a piece of green ribbon to which is attached a government seal (Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria). These are the Probate papers for Patrick Mahony, a farmer from Wangoom who died in 1894. He left an estate of £995 and personal effects worth £138. The estate was to be administered by the two sons, William and Timothy in trust for another son, Michael Mahony. The wife Margaret was granted three acres of land, £25 a year and ‘the choice of two cows out of my stock’. The daughter Johanna was to receive the same benefits after the death of her mother. Patrick Mahony, being illiterate, signed his will with a cross. Tait collection: item 12 of 62This document is of interest as it concerns a local farmer, Patrick Mahony and a local lawyer, William Ardlie. The latter had a practice in Warrnambool for the best part of seventy years, firstly in Timor Street and then in Kepler Street. He was a prominent resident in Warrnambool. The document was originally in the hands of the law clerk, Thomas Goodall and it was passed on to lawyers occupying the Kepler Street premises until it was found in the buildings once used by the law firm of Mackay Taylor. This is a piece of parchment paper, folded in two with writing in black ink on all four pages. There is a seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria attached with a green ribbon and three red stamps of the Master in Equity in the Supreme Court. The Allansford Artificial breeders was commenced in 1960 As a business its main focus was on the improvement of local herds for local farmers.As a result of 32 district farmers meeting at the Allansford Mechanics Hall, the Allansford & District Artificial Breeders Co-operative Society was formed. The subscription for membership was £7 10s. The meeting was instigated through the efforts of Noel Garner, a Hopkins Point farmer, who was manager of No.1 and No.2 Warrnambool Herd Testing Associations, and Gethan Fenton, a field officer with the Warrnambool Herd Testing Association. Bill Quinlan, who had been a herd tester under Noel Garner’s management, became the first employee of the Artificial Breeders. WCB support was available from the beginning as a room was provided behind the factory offices and the AI fees were collected by the factory from suppliers’ milk cheques. In the first 12 months Bill worked alone with some assistance from Russell Learmonth and Roger Walsh, both Kraft employees. Both factories realised the benefits of herd improvement in view of their overall increased production so membership was encouraged. Semen from the best sires in Canada and New Zealand were made available and farmers also could soon see the benefits. The initial board of directors, unlike WCB beginnings, consisted entirely of farmers. These included Michael Melican (Wangoom), Gerald Mugavin (Wollaston), Noel Garner (Hopkins Point), Jim Halford (Naringal East) and Grant Warnock (Southern Cross). Membership grew rapidly and after one year there were 164 members with another 100 joining the following year. After a year of coping alone Bill was joined by Ray Eccles from Purnim and then Pat Gleeson, later a Warrnambool car dealer. John Fitzgerald became a part-time technician. These signs were attached to the entrance gates of users. In the mid 1970s it became known as the Warrnambool Co-operative and while it maintained a strong rural and farming focus a opened a retail store in Warrnambool in Timor Street in the 1970's which became the largest trading department store in the district. By the late 1990s they had 8000 members and employed 84 full time and 120 casual staff. It met a sorry end in the 2000's.This sign is a link to a business which had a large exposure in the latter part of the 20th Century. As such it has social and historical significance. This book records the impounding of animals which have been found wandering on local roads or trespassing on land. Many are farm animals and give the various breeds of animals from red Ayrshire cows to bay ponies, and nanny goats. Impounded animals were either claimed by their owners after payment of a fee or if unclaimed , they were sold to defray the costs. It operated from Merrivale Drive.Black cloth covered card cover . It is signed by P Teulon Beamish who was arch Deacon in Warrnambool for many years. Three Bostock brothers married three the Aitkin sisters. James was the youngest of the Bostock family as his mother died in childbirth at his delivery. He had a keen interest in horses and worked for both Augustus and John .He died in 1919. Alice died in 1896 at the age of 53.This is one of a number of documents which relate to the Bostock family who were one of the most important pioneering families of the Western District. Augustus Bostock was the 9th child of Robert & Rachael Bostock of Vaucluse Epping Forest, Van Diemen’s Land. He was only 4 years old when his mother died. He was inspired by his father to seek his fortune in the Western District of Victoria. He arrived around 1850. He married Margaret Aitkin in July 1865. Augustus owned several properties in the district and leased others. He sat on the court of Warrnambool, Mortlake or Hexham as required. He resided at Marramook in Hawkesdale and later moved to Vaucluse in Hopetoun Road Warrnambool, where he died in 1920 at the age of 87. He was involved in many aspects of life in the Western District, racing, cricket, and social activities to name a few. This is a Federation certificate showing the signatures of the Shire of Warrnambool personnel who signed the addresses presented by the Municipalities of Victoria to the Duke of York and the Governor-General in 1901 on the occasion of the Federation of the six colonies in Australia. This was a highly significant event in Australia’s history and Warrnambool shared in this occasion by voting overwhelmingly in the Referendum in favour of Federation. This certificate shows the official local government acceptance of the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia and the regard for matters of Empire and the representatives of British Royalty. It also has the signatures of the Shire personnel, many of whom were prominent men in the Warrnambool district in the early 20th century, especially Gideon Nicol, James Lindsay, Alexander Rollo and John Glasgow. It was reported in the Warrnambool Standard at the time that this certificate had been designed and illuminated by Victor Henry, an art student from Warrnambool and the son of one of Warrnambool’s Councillors, This is a certificate indicating that the Shire of Warrnambool Councillors signed the Addresses presented by the Municipalities of Victoria to the Duke of York and the Governor- General in January 1901. The certificate is mounted on card with paper binding on the edges and contains the signatures of the President of the Shire of Warrnambool, nine Councillors and the Shire Secretary. It is highly ornamented with lithographs of the crests of the six States of Australia, an archway , an image of a woman representing the British Empire, a lion, a British flag and the crest of ‘United Australia’ and other symbols. This book has written by a local Warrnambool resident Dennis O’Keeffe. He was a folk-singer and composer and collector of folk songs. In this book he documented for the first time the full details of the origins of the song, ‘Waltzing Matilda’, especially its connections with 19th century Warrnambool. It contains much original material. This book is significant because it was written by a well-known Warrnambool resident and tells the full story of the origins of the song, Waltzing Matilda, including its beginnings in Warrnambool in 1894. The book is signed by the author. This is a soft cover book of 294 pages. In 1977 a group of Mount Beauty cross country skiers formed the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club. In 1979, a version of the famous Birkebeiner race, the first Australian Birkebeiner was held at Falls Creek. In June 1990 representatives from Australia put their case for a southern hemisphere race in the series. Following a trial event in 1990. Australia became the 12th member of Worldloppet in the winter of 1991, with the first Kangaroo Hoppet. In 1991 a parade and commemorative torch lighting ceremony were organised in Mt Beauty as part of the celebrations to mark the first official Kangaroo Hoppett with participation from local community groups and commercial organisations, the Chamber of Commerce, local government representatives and individuals.Kangaroo Hoppet caters to diverse interests by offering a 42km and 21km event. It also offers a 7km event that attracts skiers, ranging from elite juniors to parents, grandparents, babies and first time skiers. It is recognised on the world cross country ski race calendar. It brings large numbers of participants and spectators to the area which support tourism, local businesses and employment. The Wireless Institute of Victoria was established in 1910 and amateur radio operators (called hams) in Victoria were issued with licences by this institute. Cards such as this one were exchanged by operators to confirm a contact between two amateur radio operators anywhere in the world (called QSL cards). The cards contained information regarding the radio contact made, the strength of the signal, the type of transmitter etc and the words, codes and abbreviations used were known internationally. This card, which is an unused one, belonged to Ted Salamy who had the call sign A 3AJ. This licence was issued in 1924 and was the 35th amateur radio licence issued in Victoria. It is believed that this was the first amateur radio station established in Warrnambool. Ted Salamy (1903-1977) was the son of Michael Salamy who established jewellery shops in Timor Street and in Liebig Street in Warrnambool in the 20th century. This sign was probably attached to a building or placed in a window and was most likely to have been at the Timor Street, Warrnambool State Savings Bank building. The State Savings Bank had its origins in the Port Phillip Savings Bank established in Melbourne in 1841 and in 1853 it became known as the Commissioners’ Savings Banks in the Colony of Victoria. A Warrnambool Savings Bank branch was established in 1859 in temporary premises and in 1860 it moved to a new building in Liebig Street. In 1884 a new sandstone building was erected in Timor Street and the bank operated from there until 1957. In 1912 the Commissioners’ Savings Banks in Victoria became the State Savings Bank. From 1957 to 1990 the Warrnambool State Savings Bank (called the State Bank of Victoria, Warrnambool Branch after 1980) had premises in Liebig Street. In 1990 the State Bank was subsumed into the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.The Warrnambool State Savings Bank was a leading banking establishment in Warrnambool for 130 years and this sign is an important memento of that institution. This is a rectangular piece of fine brown metal mesh with an ornamental gold trim around the edges and gold lettering. This item came from the estate of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool. It is a type of autograph book where the signatures are used to form inkblots, thus creating patterns which in this case are called the ‘ghosts’ of those signing. The making and interpreting of ink blots became popular in the late 19th century and this autograph book created by Cecil Henland is a quirky example of this craze. The autograph book belonged to Agnes Ardlie and was apparently given to her on her 13th birthday (1928). Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. This book is of great interest as a good example of an early 20th century style of autograph book using the signatures to form ink blots. It also has local provenance as the signatures/blots are mostly those of an Ardlie family and other early to mid 20th century Warrnambool personalities.This is a book of 50 pages. The cover is dark red with the inkblot or ‘ghost of a celebrated general’ in black and white in the middle of the front cover. This inkblot is reprinted on the second page. The front cover and spine have gold printing. The book originally had 48 blank pages with a fold down the middle and printed space at the top and bottom for a date and a name. This book has 19 blank pages and the others are filled with ink blots formed by writing a signature along the fold and then folding over the sheet without blotting to get patterns called in this book, ‘ghosts’. This book has been a local library copy. It contains information on Australian airmail cards and letters and their value in 1990 and was first produced in 1937. This is a 1990 edition and is number 764 of a limited edition of 1000 copies and is signed by the author. It has some local Warrnambool interest as there is information on the first aeroplane flight to Warrnambool by Basil Watson in 1917 and the 1922 Qantas flights between Charleville and Cloncurry with the pilots Paul McGinness and Hudson Fysh. Paul McGinness, regarded as the founder of Qantas, was born and reared in Framlingham, a small settlement near Warrnambool. This book is of minor interest as it has information on early airmail in Australia and includes information on two people connected to Warrnambool’s history - Basil Watson, the first person to fly a plane to Warrnambool and Paul McGinness, from Framlingham near Warrnambool, the founder of Qantas Airways.This is a hard cover book of 307 pages. This is a wall decoration intended for a child's room or centre. It shows Humpty Dumpty and a girl nursery rhyme character and is believed to have been on the wall in a children's ward at the Warrnambool Hospital. The painters were A&A Henderson of Ballarat, believed to be Angus and Andrew Henderson who had a sign-writing and house decorating business in Ballarat in the early to mid 20th century. The business operated under the name Henderson Brothers. This letterhead was used in the business of Alex Black, a Warrnambool house painter and decorator. Alexander Black (1862-1918) came to Warrnambool in the late 1880s and established his business in Timor Street. He was a Town Councillor and a Trustee of the Friendly Societies Park. Kinross Court in Warrnambool was originally called Blacks Lane and was named after Alexander Black. In 1962 it was renamed Kinross Court after Alexander Black’s birthplace in Scotland. This letterhead is an attractive one and is a good example of a letterhead from the early 1900s. It is also a memento of Alex Black, a Warrnambool businessman in the 19th and early 20th centuries.This is a buff-coloured piece of paper which has crease marks from being folded. The Star Hotel was built in 1863 as a private dwelling, by James Shackell who owned the Bond Store, next door. It was a small house consisting of only a couple of rooms. In 1867 Joseph Salomon bought the house and converted it into a hotel. He built an underground bar to "deal with the peculiarities of the Echuca climate". It was called 'The Shades'. In 1890 Jane Pygall bought the hotel, which was described by the Riverine Herald as having ' three parlours, seven bedrooms, underground bar, kitchen, bathroom, outhouses, small stables, and entrance from two streets." She changed the name to The Esplanade Hotel. In 1890 it was de-licensed along with many hotels in Echuca. It had been a very popular drinking place for all the wharf workers, who continued to to drink illegally in the underground bar. It was then that the escape tunnel to the laneway was built , so the drinkers could escape the Police raids. For many years it was a private dwelling, or an office. In 1973 the City of Echuca bought the Star Hotel and resored it. At the time this photograph was taken it was the main tourist information centre for the Port of Echuca. It now operates as a hotel, serving meals and providing performance opportunities for musicians.The Star Hotel is very significant in Echuca's history due to its proximity to the Echuca Wharf. It was the closest bar to the wharf. Despite Jane Pygall trying to improve the quality of her clientele, the wharf drinkers preferred to drink at The Star Hotel, as the Bridge Hotel catered for more upmarket clientele. After de-licensing in 1897, the workers continued to drink at The Shades Bar and even put in place elaborate strategies to enable them to drink illegally there. It is now a large eating and entertainment site, and the public are still able to visit 'The Shades Bar'.A coloured photograph of the Star Hotel building in Murray Esplanade. These two cards have been sent In 1929 by two early Warrnambool amateur radio persons to William (Bill) Douglas, an amateur radio person with the call sign, VK3GA. The cards are QSL cards, sent as a result of radio contacts being made between two amateur radio persons. Bill Douglas (1898-1986) was a Victorian schoolteacher who was the first licensed amateur radio person in the Otway Ranges district. He was licensed in January 1929 and these cards refer to radio contacts in the July of that year. The cards do not feature the call signs of the contacts but were standard cards used by amateur radio people who did not have personalised cards at the time,. One card was sent by J.F. Anderson (VK3WN) whose address at the time was 100 Foster Street, Warrnambool. He was possibly connected to the family of James and Jane Anderson who lived for some time in Foster Street but later went farming in the Nullawarre district. The other card was sent by W. Brown of 23 Mackay Crescent South Warrnambool (call sign unknown). No information has been found on this person.These two cards are of some importance as they are very early examples of amateur radio operations in Warrnambool. .1 A rectangular card, very faded and torn at edges. On Saturday September 2, 2023, Russell Yeoman led a group of 22 society members and interested others on a walk following trhe bounadries of the original Shillingalw farm. Commencing at the corner of Panther Place and Library Place, we proceeded up to Shillinglaw Cafe then the Shillinglaw trees at the former Eltham Shire Office site then along Main Road to the fire station then throughh St Laurence Lane and uinder the railway line , along Diamond Street then return via the Diamond Creek trail behind Andrew Park. The actual farm boundary went past the creek and further up the hill. The original farm comprised lot 90 of Holloway’s 1851 subdivision of Little Eltham. Its area was 30 acres lying east of the Diamond Creek and north of Henry Street. Original bell from the first Eltham Fire Station in Arthur Street erected on a tower in November 1928, the station opened in January 1929. In 1988 the bell was mounted beneath a wooden sign of Country Fire Authority, Eltham Fire Station, 909 Main Road, Eltham. As of September 2023 the bell is in the same location, with the signboard gone, suspended in a steel metal tower-like frame. The bell has seen service at the original Eltham Fire Station in Arthur Street (1928-1931), Henry Street beside the Rechabite Hall (1931-1935), Main Road (east side, site of present-day Coles 1935-1965) and 909 Main Road (1965-present). Samantha Robertson 1988 Entrant No. 1 Ref: Series 34 Items 1, 2, 42-45 SHIRE OF ELTHAM COMMUNITY PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEY Photography is an artform which many of us practice, sometimes purely for artistic pursuit, sometimes to record the people and events in our lives. In 1988, as part of a local Bicentennial project, the Shire of Eltham conducted the Eltham Community Photographic Survey. Up to 100 entries were to be selected by a panel of photographers for entry into the Eltham Photographic Survey Exhibition. Entries had to be submitted by May 13, 1988. Entrants whose images were selected for the exhibition were contacted and requested to further submit an entry form providing entrant’s name, area of residence, age, and proposed captions. These details were then used to produce labels for the exhibition mounts. Where negatives had not been supplied, these were requested to support the display of printed enlargements mounted on 10” x 8” cardboard. The mounted prints were made available post exhibition for sale at $8.50 each for colour prints and $7.00 for B&W prints. Residents in the Shire were invited to collect a free roll of film and take a photograph of what they either liked or did not like about the area. A total of 160 entrants submitted multiple entries for the exhibition. Of those selected for exhibition, entrants ranged in age from 9 to 70 years. All custom colour and black and white printing for the exhibition was completed by Wattle Studios of Eltham. The Eltham Photographic Survey was jointly auspiced by the Shire of Eltham and Wattle Studios, of 953 Main Road, Eltham. It was also intended to hold the exhibition at a venue in the Shire’s North Riding from Monday, June 20 to Friday June 24. It was then displayed at the Were Street Theatre, Montmorency from Friday, June 24 to Thursday, July 7. Series 34: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 - Prints & Documentation Series consists of 117 photographs of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. Items I - 41 are larger photographs mounted on card, which were exhibited. Items 42 - 117 are unmounted copies, alternative takes and other entries. Corresponding negatives contained in Series 35: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 – Negatives which consists of 267 colour and B&W negatives and one colour slide of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. The negatives are arranged by the entrant number of the photographer. The Eltham Community Photographic Survey collection is significant to the local community as it was curated by the local community - ordinary people of all ages - representing what they liked and did not like in the area where they lived. It represents an unfiltered representation of the Shire of Eltham as it was in 1988. It also represents one of many projects as part of the national programme of events and celebrations to commemorate the bicentenary. It is a time capsule of life in the 1980s of this urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north.
