Twenty-five books donated by old collegian Francis Tweedie and possibly his sister Miss E M Tweedie. Francis Tweedie entered Ballarat College in 1889. He was the son of Mrs Tweedie 60 Doveton St, and attended with his brother Alec. The school holds no record of Miss E M Tweedie's attendance. Some of the books contain the signatures of Andrew Anderson and May Anderson. Their connection to the donors is unknown at this point. Example of ongoing old collegian support of school. Functional object - Bottle
The Victoria Tower was lost on her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne on 17 October 1869/10/1869 after 85 days at sea. It was wrecked on Lonsdale Reef while approaching Port Phillip Heads. The 2,300 tons cargo contained general cargo, bottled beer, slates, iron pipes and hardware. It was owned by the White Star Line, T. Ismay. The Master of the vessel was Captain Kerr. The weather conditions were hazy, squally, thick and clearing at times. The cause was attributed to running ashore in thick weather and careless navigation. The original Weatherly Library was situated in the space immediately on the left of the archway. The fittings and furnishing of the library was a generous gift in 1936 of Mrs H P Mackenzie of Trawalla in honour of her pioneer parents, Mr and Mrs William Weatherly. The library was panelled with blackwood and fitted with shelves intended to eventually house 3000 books. Specially made solid blackwood chairs, upholstered in genuine hide, two long reading tables, an upholstered bench seat under the north window and an ornate carved mantelpiece topped by a classical broken pediment framing a carved head of Minerva were also donated. In 1971 this library was no longer large enought o serve the growing number of boys at the college; it was replaced by a bigger, separate building, also known as the Weatherly Library. This building is currently in use, and recently renovated, as the senior staff room. In 1993 a third library building was opened and named Erindale in recognition of property associated with Clarendon PLC. In 2012 the school opened the Fraser Library on the senior campus in honour of old collegian and school council chair, Darrell J Fraser. Book prize awarded to Newton Wanliss for excellence in History by William Henderson Chair of Council. Newton subsequently donated the book back to the school for inclusion in the Weatherly LIbrary in 1937. Accession number 1812. The book was catalogued and call number 910.12 painted on spine. Socially significant item due to signature of William Henderson, founder of the school. Prizes were usually given in the name of the Headmaster. During Headmaster McCoy's time (1864 - 1874) the prizes were given in his name and at his expense. The school was between principals at Christmas 1876, hence the signature of William Henderson. There is a Mary Bell on the school register who enrolled at Ballarat College (Girls School) in 1888. Birthday 2 March 1875 aged 13 years and 10 months. Father Alex bell. It is possible the book was donated to the Weatherly Library by this former old collegian. The Weatherly Library was opened in 1936 and its collection significantly established by donation or bequest of old collegians and community members or associates. Postcard photograph showing a tree fern gully. The title on the front is Gully "Hospice" Olinda. The Hospice was a guest house built in 1904 by Joseph Gutmann in the Main Street of Olinda. The Dorey Family ran The Hospice from 1908 - 1911. The Hospice burned down in 1924. The reverse of the postcard contains a small section of a letter that must be continued elsewhere.
