Postcard - Postcard Booklet, Levi Fils & Co, Vues Detachables
Levy Sons & Co. 1895-1919 Paris, France and London, England In 1864 the Parisian photographic studio of Ferrier pere*, fils & Soulier was bought out and became M. Leon & J. Levy. This partnership lasted until 1872 when Leon left and it was renamed J. Levy & Co., which became an important producer of stereo-views and lantern slides. By 1895 his sons had joined the company and it was renamed once again to Levy Sons & Co. (or Levy et ses Fils). His son Lucien became a well known photographer who began publishing international view-cards from his own work depicting scenes mostly from within the French empire, though quite a number are from England and there are some from Australia and Russia as well. There are few French towns that are not captured by his cards. His name does not appear on the cards but - L.L. follows the title as a photo credit. Many of their cards are not attributed. These cards were printed as colotypes in black & white, sepia, and over speckled color lithography. In 1920 the studio united with Neurdein Freres to become Levy & Neurdein reunis. Their negatives are now owned by the Roger-Viollet Photographic Agency. *Claude Marie Ferrier (1811-1889) was also an important early photographer. He was the 'Pere' in Ferrier Pere, Fils & Soulier - best remembered for their stunning series of glass views. Sorting this collection is a challenge. The postcard rears display a variety of forms - a) garland emblem with LL inside, b) with an addition emblem within (FPS?). Or c) - no emblem which may mean production by another company - however LL. remains on the front as a credit to the photographer. http://www.metropostcard.com/picslogos/pcl-levylucien.jpg.jpg http://www.unpi.com/clem/unpostcards/LON1919PC2Naback.jpg Example Colour Card circa 1920 No. 78 Paris - L'Escalier de l'Opera - LL. http://www.postcardcollector.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/1306/levy-fils-cie-paris-specifically-lucien-levy-llAbbeyville was a town in the Somme, so that this is a possible reason that the name has been erased on the postcard. http://www.france-voyage.com/travel-photos/abbeville-11435.htmSmall brown covered book of 12 postcards with views of Abbeyville in the Somme. Letter Book, 1950s
This letter book contains the correspondence from the legal firm of William Ardlie in Warrnambool to other legal firms in Melbourne and other parts of Victoria (1951-1957). The correspondence deals mainly with legal matters concerning property transfers, wills, probates and court cases. William Ardlie (1943-1933) was the son of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. In 1865 William Ardlie established his legal practice in Warrnambool, initially in partnership with George Barber. William Ardlie, prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool, practised as a lawyer until the early 1930s and the firm continued on after his death with members of the Ardlie family involved in legal firms in the Warrnambool district until the early 21st century. This letter book is of historical interest because of the letters dealing with the property, wills etc of many residents of Warrnambool and district during the 1950s. It will be a useful research tool. This letter book of 393 pages has a buff-coloured cover which is somewhat stained. 227 pages contain copies of letters written over a period of seven years and the rest of the pages are blank. The pages are of a lightweight strength. At the front of the book is an alphabetical index with black printed letters on tabs cut out of the outer edges of the pages.Agents 1951ardlie family, history of warrnambool -

Document - Three letters pertaining to the retention of the Old Bridge
Upon confirmation that a new bridge was to be built, there was some discussion about the possibility of retaining the old bridge for pedestrian purposes, or part of the old bridge as a fishing platform. These letters are part of the correspondence re an organisation taking responsibility for the ongoing maintenance so the old bridge could be retained. The old bridge was constructed of locally sourced timber and was such an important structure to the town when built. Its sentimental value saw locals attempt (although unsuccessfully) to retain the old bridge. Two A4 Typewritten letters, one from the Road Construction Authority to the National Trust Australia, the other from the Department of Conservation Forests & Lands to Mr John Irvine. It relates to transport, including horse trams that travelled through Kew. Another letter from B F Bade in 1986 identifies the hitching post as having been once located outside the old Kew Town Hall in Walpole Street, and dating from 1907. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Postcard
Black and white photograph depicts wide shot of Lake Kerford, where an older man stands with a horse and small carriage. On top of the carriage sits a small child, and both face towards the camera to pose. Photograph does not state when it was captured, but possibly been taken c. 1920.The postcard holds Historic significance due to its connection to Beechworth and its Lake Kerford. It demonstrates the interactions between nature and current European residents, especially how the lake has somewhat been 'protected' with the man made fencing and road. It also presents information on the environmental development or degradation for the area, with possible changes to the environment that may have been caused by human physical forces, natural decay or Global Warming. The social significance is due to the connection between the postcard and the individuals in the photograph.Black and white oval photograph on rectangular postcard, printed on card.Obverse: Lake Kerford / Beechworth Reverse: POST CARD / Stamp Here / Printed in Australia / This space may be used for Correspondence within the Commonwealth without extra postage / THIS SPACE IS FOR NAME AND ADDRESS / 84 - 108 - 1 / BMM3000lakes, lake kerford, beechworth, postcard, horse drawn carriage -

Postcard, c1910
Mayday Hills Mental Hospital was originally constructed in 1864 under the name of the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum. It was built for locals in need of help who were kept in the local gaol. In its first decade, the residents of the hospital were used as menial labourers but over time, as mental healthcare progressed, were cared for in more nuanced ways. This site became a training hospital for nurses in the 1960's. Eventually, mental health patients were moved to other care facilities and Mayday Hills was operating as a geriatric care facility. It was closed in 1995, after which the buildings and their grounds were purchased to La Trobe University to be used as a campus. The university sold the site in 2011 to private ownership. This postcard depicts the Mayday Hills Mental Hospital (Titled as 'Asylum for insane') from a distance and includes the surrounding grounds and farmlands.Mayday Hills Mental Hospital is a historically significant site for many factors. It is representative of healthcare practice in nineteenth century Victoria. It contains rare examples of construction and architecture. It is also significant for aesthetic and technical reasons.Sepia tone postcard printed on matte cardObverse: Beautiful Beechworth (Vic.) 1880 ft. above Sea Level - General View of Asylum for Insane/ Copyright F.
