The Shamrock Hotel in 1861 hosted the sole survivor of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition, John King, on his return to Melbourne after his rescue. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Undertakers: Peter Fizelle and Michael Mulqueen formed a partnership in 1898 which continued until Fizelle's death in 1901. It was then that Michael Mulqueen became the sole proprietor of the parlour with his brother John in charge of stables - an integral part of the business as many of the cabs were hired from the ranks next to the Shamrock Hotel. The business continued in this format until 1926 when the brothers purchased a motorised hearse, built in Melbourne by Australian Motor Industries. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Pall Mall: Sandhurst circa 1860s. In January, 1865, land in Pall Mall sold for 90 pounds per foot. In 1867, the Duke of Edinburgh visited the town. The Prince Albert Hall was erected next to the town hall for the Prince's visit. Unfortunately, the hall burnt down just hours before his arrival. A torchlight procession to mark the occasion saw the model of 'Galatea', manned by four boys, aged about eight, catch fire and result in the death of three people. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Style: Bishopcourt, Forest Street Bendigo, was built for resident surgeon Paul Howard McGillivray in 1876. His consulting rooms were located on the ground floor. His private entry was from Forest Street, originally enclosed with a veranda and balcony. The building was later acquired by the Anglican Church as the Bishop's Palace, hence the name ''Bishopcourt''. Dr.McGillivray was one time president of the Victorian Medical Society and a fellow of the Linnaean Society for his works on natural history. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. John Goyne: Bendigo stamper-grating factory, circa 1900. John Goyne experimented with 36 hole per square inch sieves (for panning gold) until he had increased this to 290 per square inch thus trapping much more gold. Eventually his business was sending sieves Australia wide. Bendigo Advertiser '' The way we were'' from 2000. Busy: the Frank Brown Brick factory, Back Creek, circa 1900. Frank M. Brown was born in 1857. He began his working life as an apprentice pattern maker with A. Roberts & Sons, iron founders, in Wills Street, Sandhurst. He later became foreman of Horwoods Foundry in Vine Street. He formed a foundry partnership with Thomas R.J. Carter in 1887 as Carter & Brown. In 1889 he left Carter to start his own City foundry in Wattle Street. In 1892 Brown established a steam brick works opposite 208 Sheepwash Road (now Sternberg Street) which continued to operate until about 1916. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Iron works: 21 Garsed Street, Bendigo, circa 1900. Garrett John Sweeney was born in 1847 in Dublin, Ireland. He opened his timber and saw milling yard in 1882. The factory was able to produce all types of fancy wood products to supply builders within a 100-mile radius of Bendigo. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Institution: State School No. 981, Chapel Street, Kangaroo Flat. The eastern end of the school was opened in 1870 and led by John Hamilton (teacher), his wife Mabel (assistant) and Emma McColough (pupil teacher). Within a fortnight there were 130 children. The first additions to the school were made in 1873, following the proclamation of the Education Act. Other additions were made in 1875 and 1883 and a general remodelling took place in 1916. As business grew, so did the store. After Stevenson's death, the business continued by his widow and son Richard. Permission to erect a balcony was granted in 1861. Such cantilever balconies were once a common feature in Bendigo architecture. The cottage was at one time a brothel. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. The Apothecary's: the residence and surgery of Dr. J. McIntyre Eadie. Lured by gold fever in 1852, John McIntyre came to Bendigo from Scotland. In 1855 he married Jean Grant (sister of Dr. James Eadie) and immediately formed a partnership with Eadie to establish an apothecary (chemist) shop at View Point, Sandhurst. James Eadie had arrived at the diggings in 1854 from Scotland. The partnership was dissolved in 1869, yet Dr. Eadie continued his work as a surgeon until 1897.
