Photograph - High Street, Kew, 1960-65
The borders of the main components of Kew and Kew East have not always conformed to current boundaries. In the past this photograph has been labelled as East Kew, whereas for most of the twentieth century the site has been within Kew's borders. The purpose of the photograph is unrecorded yet it has value in that it shows those businesses who occupied this site in Kew during the early 1960s.This small photograph is significant as it shows the location of and building used by WD Vaughan, former Mayor of Kew who was a successful newspaper proprietor in Melbourne.Small polaroid colour positive of High Street in Kew, probably in the 1960s. From left we can see the brick viaduct covering the tracks of what was once the Outer Circle Railway. Behind this brick wall, Dunnings Timber Yard was situated. At the end of the walls of the viaduct there is an entrance to a walkway [now the Anniversary Trail], which once provided access to Windsor Avenue, and also to the East Kew Station (now demolished and part of the Outer Circle Railway Reserve). On the other side of this walkway is a cream brick building (demolished) occupied at this time by WD Vaughan Pty Ltd, printer and publisher of the Kew Advertiser (newspaper). Stretching behind the brick facade is an extensive building that must have housed the printing works. Beside Vaughan's, there is a large building (demolished) housing at that time an estate agent named AJ Kennedy. This area is now separated by kerbing.High St East Kew / Corner of Harp Rd. / Looking South -

1915 - First Headmaster Frederick Johnson
Copy of a black and white photograph published in High Tide, laminated. Accompanied by 2 captions.Caption 1 reads: Mr Johnson. First Headmaster at Williamstown High. 1915-1927. Caption 2 reads: The first Departmental Headmaster. F.W. Johnson had suggested a school motto of 'Don't drift' because so many pupils tended to drift away from their early teaching. However, Frank Tate, Director of Education, recommended the more positive 'Hold fast'. This was the time of the First World War. The Germans had invaded Belgium...In designing the school badge the colours of the Belgium flag, red, yellow and black were chosen. (From school records.) MEYER COLLECTION - FALLS CREEK PHOTOS In 1947 a determined group of like-minded State Electricity Commission (SEC) staff including Ray Meyer, the chief surveyor of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, had a common interest that revolved around the skiing potential of the snow-covered high plains which included what is now the resort of Falls Creek. The six SEC employees, Toni St Elmo, Ray Meyer, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson (together with their families) banded together to secretly build a 'hut' that was the first ski lodge at Falls Creek. Using a road built in 1930s to gain access to Falls Creek, their hut project was carried out in secret as efforts by other skiers were blocked by H.H.C. Williams – the engineer in charge of the Hydro Scheme. In 1946 Ray Meyer made a trip to the Lands Office in Melbourne. He came away with a 99-year lease on three acres that was ideally suited for a hut designed by Lloyd Dunn. Adrian Ruffenacht (Design Engineer for the KHS) had suggested where the group should build because of easy access to a spring for water. Much of the building material required was scavenged from derelict huts on the high plains. Due to the need for secrecy, the determined group worked on the hut in the evenings and weekends to avoid detection. During the building period the group had met at Echidna Rock (now known as Eagle Rock) where Skippy St Elmo announced, "This is my favourite ‘Skyline’.” And so the first lodge in the area at Falls Creek Ski Resort came into existence. With the development of the International Poma in the 1970s, the Skyline Lodge, which was sited between the ski-lift’s pole one and pole two, was demolished. However, the legacy of Ray Meyer, Toni St Elmo, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson and Skyline lives on in the vibrant atmosphere of Falls Creek Resort. The MEYER COLLECTION documents developments on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme and their life at Falls Creek from the mid 1930s to 1960s.This image is significant because it depicts aspects of the life of a pioneering family of Falls Creek and the founders of "Skyline", the first lodge at Falls Creek.A skier, possibly H GIbbs, overlooking the Bogong High Plainsfalls creek, bogong high plains, h gibbs -

Household, Pair of Over-Shoes, 1940s
These over shoes or galoshes would have been worn by a woman wishing to protect the high-heel shoes she was wearing at the time. They would have been used in wintry weather or when walking over rough and wet country roads or tracks, perhaps when going dancing or to a function of some sort. With the advent of common car use and better roads, this type of over-shoe would no longer be used today. These shoes are of interest as examples of the footwear worn by women in the mid 20th century to protect lighter and more fragile shoes. This is a pair of black rubber over-shoes or galoshes for wearing over high-heeled shoes. They have moulded rubber soles with high heels, rubber uppers with a flap to cover the ankles and an opening with two metal press studs with black button tops. The inside is lined with light brown cloth. ‘Dunlop’ ‘DZM’ ‘LZA’ women’s fashions, history of warrnambool -

Rosemary Myers spoke about Lizzie Daley in May 2012. She described the house as having lots of ornaments, and how she enjoyed going thereto buy ribbons and laces for a pair of baby booties she knitted for her school handwork at Melton P S 430. Margaret Nolan's memories of Lizzie: When we were young kids we would go down to visit our cousins, the Myers who lived on the Highway. My great grand mother Mary Luby lived in Reserve road when she came to Melton, she was married here in 1857. Her sister Ann nee Dowling was married to Henri Miers [Myers] in 1867. Her other sister Eliza married William Daley in 1862. He had a Bootmakers shop in the High street. Their daughter Lizzie later turned it into a haberdashery shop. We would go there to buy sewing threads and ribbons. Margaret nee Nolan Brooks memories recorded on the 20th September 2013 Book was from Lizzie Daley's shop in High Street, Meltonlocal identities -

Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection, including a series of photos of buildings in High Street (formerly Sydney Road), Wodonga. The CWA Hall officially opened in 1938 having been built on land granted by the Wodonga Council. Wodonga Infant Welfare Centre also occupied part of the building until 1959. Last meeting of the CWA in that hall was in held in December 1983, with the Council resuming ownership of the land to build the current day Post Office. Country Fire Brigade’s new fire station opened in High Street on 31st March 1940. The building comprised an appliance room for housing the fire engine and plant. The floor had been especially treated to enable dancing when the occasion warranted. There was a meeting room, a station-keeper’s bedroom and a repair shop. A shower room and modern kitchen were also included. The Fire station relocated to Smythe and Stanley Street corner which opened in 1977. They have now relocated to Thomas Mitchell Drive, Wodonga. This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.A series of black and white photos depicting the Fire Station and CWA hall located in High Street, Wodonga C1940 - 1983wodonga businesses, high st wodonga, wodonga fire brigade, wodonga country women's association, cwa wodonga -
