Uniform - World War 1 1914-1918, Hat Badge Rising Sun, c1914
Proudly worn by soldiers of the 1st and 2nd Australian Imperial Force in both World Wars, the 'Rising Sun' badge has become an integral part of the digger tradition. The distinctive shape of the badge, worn on the upturned side of a slouch hat, is commonly identified with the spirit of ANZAC formed at the Gallipoli landings 1915 There are seven patterns of the Rising Sun. 1902 - 1991. The Rising Sun has evolved over time and today Australian Army soldiers wear the seventh pattern Rising Sun. The Third Pattern Rising Sun Badge. May 1904 The third pattern Rising Sun badge carried a scroll inscribed with the words ‘Australian Commonwealth Military Forces’ and was worn throughout both World Wars. There were, however, a number of variations of the badge; a special version was struck for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902 and there were badges of the Commonwealth Horse and the Australian Instructional Corps, each with its respective title on the scrolls. This pattern badge formed the template for all subsequent General Service badges. The most widely accepted version of the origin of this badge is the one that attributes the selection of its design, c1902, to a British Officer, Major General Sir Edward Hutton, the newly appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Forces. Hutton had earlier received as a gift from Brigadier General Joseph Gordon, a military acquaintance of long standing, a ‘Trophy-of-Arms’ composed of mounted cut and thrust swords and triangular Martini-Henry bayonets that were arranged in a semi-circle around the Crown. To General Hutton, the shield was symbolic of the cooperation between the naval and military forces of the Empire. 1 Russell Street was built in 1888 and from 1888–1905 (maybe 1911, as his death notice says he died at Russell Street) it was the home of James Burrell, a blacksmith. His smithy was on the corner of Canterbury Road. In 1893 a block of land (No.3 ) was bought to establish the fire station and James Burrell acted as fire officer and stored the reel and hose until the station was built. From 1911–1928 it was the fire station residence, as the brigade gained status. James Burrell (1860-1911) married Elizabeth Wilson (1862-1925). She was daughter of Edward Wilson. They had 4 children: James Herbert, known as Bert (1888-1953); Aleck (1890-1951); William Spencer, known as Bill, (1893-1976) and Elsie May (1898-1990). Both James and Elizabeth Burrell are buried in Burwood Cemetery. From 1930–1943 Michael Ginnane, retired station master, and members of his family lived in the house. Michael Ginnane (1864-1935) married Annie Mary Brock (1868-1945). Both were born in the Ballarat area. They had 10 children. From 1913-1917 he was station master at Woodend. In the 1925 electoral rolls the family is listed as living at Surrey Hills station. There was a station master's house adjacent to the station (demolished and the site now part of the car park accessed off Blackburn Street). They are again listed here in the 1925 electoral roll. By 1931 they are at 1 Russell Street and he is listed as a retired station master. tin, Mid to late 1900s
The British Australasian Tobacco Co. was based in Melbourne and Sydney. The parent company was founded in England, circa 1902. This item "HAVELOCK" is one of many ready rubbed tobacco tins produced by the British Australasian Tobacco Company. The ready rubbed tobacco held within the tin was mainly used by those smokers who rolled their own cigarettes. These smokers would have mainly used their palm and formed a cup then placing their choice of the amount of tobacco to be rolled. This would then be placed on the fine cigarette paper and rolled and sealed (using saliva in the mouth) into the required shape. There were mechanical "roll your own" gadgets on the market but most rural users, especially males used their palms. (Ref Victorian Collections)Roll your own cigarettes were popularly used in rural areas, especially when "tailor made" cigarettes were more expensive. Tobacco consumption in Australia is decreasing and fewer smokers are "rolling their own" cigarettes.A dark green rectangular shaped metal Havelock tobacco tin with a weave pattern. Book, Letter book, Early 20th century
This letter book (1910-1922) was found in the old Mackay Taylor building in Kepler Street. The Secretary of the Presbytery of Mortlake in the early 1900s was George Mackay who established his legal business in 1891 and merged with the business of James Fletcher in 1893 to form Fletcher and Mackay. In the 1920s J. Taylor joined the business which was known from then on as Mackay and Taylor and this firm existed until the 1990s. George Mackay was prominent in Warrnambool civic and community affairs and was Secretary of St. John’s Presbyterian Church for many years. The Presbytery of Mortlake was an administrative district committee established in 1862 and included the Presbyterian churches of Port Fairy, Tower Hill, Wangoom, Allansford, Warrnambool, Woodford, Hexham, Caramut, Mortlake and Terang. The committee consisted of the local ministers, some elders and other church representatives and met monthly or quarterly to discuss church business that affected the region. This letter book is of some significance as it indicates the type of business carried out by a district church council – properties, missions, individual church problems etc. It also shows the community work of George Mackay, a prominent Warrnambool resident at the time, and the book contains his signature many times over. The book will be of interest to researchers. This is a ledger with dark blue binding and binding reinforcements on the spine and corners. Book, Letter Book Presbytery of Mortlake, Early 20th century
This letter book (1922-6) was found in the old Mackay Taylor building in Kepler Street. It also shows the community work of George Mackay, a prominent Warrnambool resident at the time, and the book contains his signature, many times over. The book will be of interest to researchers. This is a ledger with dark blue binding and binding reinforcements on the spine and corners. The inside covers are lined with thick paper in a mottled blue and black coloured pattern. There are 250 pages with entries up to page 54. The letter copies are typed with an alphabetical listing at the front.Front Cover: Label with typed title ‘Presbytery of Mortlake’ Spine: ‘Letter Book’ presbytery of mortlake, george mackay -

65 Albert Road. the land was first owned by George Bull when he bought it in 1860. The house was built around 1862. Members of the family owned it until 1893 when it was sold to William Johnson. Johnson died in 1897 and Catherine Sara Ryan nee Hain bought it and lived there until she died in 1927. The cottage was then sold to the Coffey family who retained the property until 1974. The cottage is conventional coursed limestone building with bluestone quoins, gabled roof, chimneys at each end and a skillion on the western side, added at a later date. It was originally a two-roomed dwelling with kitchen. Behind the cottage is a slab-sided wooden gable ended shed, containing a large limestone rubble chimney and a sleeping area within the south facing skillion section. It is unlikely that it is older than the cottage, but it is an unusual, crude structure, presumably for general farming purposes.Coloured photographcottage, building, home, house, coffey's cottage, albert road, ryan, hain, johnson, george bull -

Book - MY HUSBAND'S LIFE - AS TOLD BY MARY HAZELDENE, 1981
Sydney Herbert Hazeldene (1893-1966) was born in Bath, England and arrived in Australia in 1906. HE walked for 10 days from Melbourne to Bamawm, where he found work on a dairy farm. After 3 years he walked to Eaglehawk where he found work as a wheeler in a mine. He served in WW1 at Gallipoli, where he was wounded. After his return to Bendigo he married Mary Eales and they began a successful bus service. Unfortunately their two buses were destroyed by fire so they purchased a truck and began a removalist/carrier business serving locally and interstate. When the work became too heavy for Sydney he bought land and set up a dairy farm. They also moved into breeding chickens and soon this business overtook the dairying with the last cows sold in 1942. This was the beginning of Hazeldene's Poultry.Softcover book white front with black printed title. Memoir of 58 pages recounting author's husband's (Sydney Herbert Hazeldene) life. Journal, Baulch, Early 20th century
This ledger’s first owner was Rolf Crawley, an architect and the official engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. His grandfather, father and uncle also worked for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the family members recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. Stan Baulch later acquired the ledger, tore out the pages that had been used and recorded some aspects of his life from 1916 to 1923. Stanley Baulch (1897-1980) was the grandson of pioneer Kirkstall settlers, Francis and Ann Baulch and the son of Samuel and Eliza Baulch. In 1893 Samuel Baulch acquired the historic property of Dunmore, between Macarthur and Hawkesdale and in 1910 he purchased the property of Cowabee in the Riverina district in N.S.W. Stan Baulch managed Cowabee for some years before inheriting part of Dunmore which he named Rose Park. Cowabee was sold in 1922. Although only a few pages in length, this diary contains much interesting information on the early years of Stan Baulch at the homesteads of Cowabee and Dunmore. It will be useful for research purposes. This is a hard cover ledger with a dark grey cover and dark red binding. It contains pages printed with the name and address of the Shire of Warrnambool Engineer, Rolf Crawley. These pages contain two sections to a page ruled with blue lines to be used for short letters or invoices (originally 500 sections). The ledger also has blank pink pages used for duplicate copies. The first 42 sections have been torn out. Twenty of the pages have handwritten material in blue ink and these are biographical notes about the years 1916 to 1923 written in the ledger at a later date by Stan Baulch.Cowabee-Dunmore S.S.B. diaries 1916-23stanley baulch, cowabee & dunmore properties, rolf crawley, history of warrnambool -

Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School - The hall on the left side was the original Our Lady Help of Christians Church which was built c.1962 on the site of the former weatherboard St Mary's Church which was destroyed by fire in 1961. A new church was erected on the opposite (southern) side of Henry Street in 1976, partially on the original Lot 20 Henry Street of Holloway's Little Eltham North estate. Lot 20 Henry Street was the site of the former Wesleyan Church chapel in the 1850s which also used by David and Catherine Clark to establish their first school in 1855 prior to the erection of the Dalton Street school in 1856. The chapel was replaced by a new building, the Eltham Rechabite Hall (1893-1921) which then became the Eltham Public Hall (1922-1940). The Eltham Fire Station was also situated adjacent from 1931 to 1935. our lady help of christians primary school, henry street, eltham -

The Davey Paxman Experimental Steam Engine was purchased by the Ballarat School of Mines as the result of a bequest from Thomas Bath. The Davey Paxman Experimental Steam Engine was purchased as the result of a bequest from Thomas Bath. The 'substantial sum' was used to build an Engineering Laboratory. The Ballarat School of Mines Council minutes of 08 November 1901 record: - Plans for [the] proposed building were submitted ... and ... it was resolved that a temporary building for an Engineering Laboratory be put up.' This laboratory, as an existing building, is first mentioned in the Ballarat School of Mines President's Annual Report of 1901, presented on 28 February 1902, reporting 'the erection of a building 67ft long by 33 ft wide' This report also lists all the equipment that would be accommodated in the Engineering Laboratory, including the experimental steam engine and boiler. The experimental Davey-Paxman steam engine arrived in Ballarat towards the end of 1902. The Engineering Laboratory was opened on 14 August 1903 by His Excellency Sir Sydenham Clarke. This engineering laboratory remained in use till about 1945. By 1944 preparations were under way at the Ballarat School of Mines to expand existing facilities, to be ready for the influx of returned soldiers. A new Heat Engines laboratory was built, this time of brick construction, replacing the previous corrugated-iron shed. In the early stages the steam engine was used to drive an overhead transmission shaft for machinery in the adjacent workshop. Later the steam engine was moved to a space that became the Heat Thermodynamics Laboratory. At the end of 1969 the engine was relocated to the Thermodynamics Laboratory at the then Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (BIAE) Mt Helen Campus. It was donated to Sovereign Hill in 2006. According to the research of Rohan Lamb in 2001 around five experimental steam engines were made by Davey Paxman, and three of these had similar configuration to the Ballarat School of Mines Steam Engine, however, each of these was also unique with different valve arrangements. The list, which was on a scrap of paper in a folio held in the Essex Archives, confirmed that one was sent to India. The Ballarat steam engine can be dated to late 1901 to early 1902. Zig Plavina was responsible for moving the steam engine to Mount Helen, and worked on it as a technician for many years. He observed the following: * The condenser is driven by the low pressure engine. * The following arrangements are possible: i) the high pressure engine alone, exhausting to atmosphere. Condenser not used, crankshaft flanges not coupled. ii) crankshafts coupled, mains pressure (120 psi) steam supplied to high pressure engine, partially expanded steam delivered to low pressure engine (Tandem operation). Choice available re exhaust steam: either to the condenser or to atmosphere. iii) crankshafts not coupled, reduced pressure steam supplied to low pressure engine. Exhaust steam - either to the condenser or to atmosphere. * Valve arrangement - a choice of Pickering cut-off or throttle governor. On low pressure engine - throttle governor only.davey paxman experimental steam engine, model steam engine, steam, thermodynamics laboratory, thomas bath, bequest
