Map - World Map, Mappe Monde [Medieval Map of the World], 1910
This map from the mid-18th century doesn't include the finer details of land and sea masses that we know today. The map was produced by German cartographer and publisher, Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) and published in 1746, after his death. Earlier versions were published, such as 1707 and 1716. The date can be calculated from the Roman numerals on the top left text area. This print of a map is significant for its connection with early world explorers. A comparison of maps over the centuries shows the progression of navigational technology, the countries who claimed the land they explored. The naming of even some Australian locations shows who had already made their mark on Australia in the early 18th century. The print shows the fine details included by the cartographer and the beauty included that makes it attractive and interesting even today. The map is also significant for its connection with German cartographer, Johann Baptist Homann, whose Homann publishing company was renewed in Germany for producing high quality maps and atlases. Map behind glass in dark brown wooden frame on beige paper. The Coloured hand drawn line drawings show different hemispheres of the known world in the mid-18th century. Beautifully drawn figures and decorative embellishments enhance the map. The text on the top right has an explanation of the Figures I, II, III, and IV. This print of the 1746 map was produced in England by Leisure Arts Ltd. Garment, Dress coat
This opera coat was made for Louisa Jane Cam, nee Rust, born 24/6/1873. Her parents were John Rust born in Hamburg, Germany and Jane Mc Meekin from Port Patrick, Scotland. In 1892 Louisa married John Cam the director of the Hawthorn Brick Company. It is understood Louisa wore the coat to the opening of the first Federal Parliament in the Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne in 1901.This item being an early nineteenth century opera coat has aesthetic interest. It is also important because of its provenance being worn by Louisa Cam at a significant event in Australia's history.A three quarter length Mandarin styled gold threaded brocade, lined coat dress with long sleeves. The fabric is black with gold patterns of leaves and circles. Large circles feature gold, red, yellow, pale and dark blue flower like images surrounded by gold fringes. The yolk section finishes with a small pleat over the flared bottom section. Edging around the neck is black lace. It is understood a fur collar was previously in place. The cuffs of the sleeves are pleated and have a wide frill above the pleating. The lining is pale blue silk . At the end of the sleeves the lining has hand ruched binding. Nil -

Photograph, London 1914 - Trafalgar Day, the wreaths of the Australian submarine AE1, 21 October 1914
The Australian Submarine AE1 was launched on 22 May 1913 at Barrow-in-Furness and was lost at sea on 14 September 1914 in the vicinity of Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, probably due a collision with a reef. She was the first of two E Class submarines built for the fledgling Royal Australian Navy and was manned by Royal Navy officers with a mixed crew of sailors drawn from the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. "Accompanied by her sister AE2, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Henry Stoker, RN, AE1 departed England in March 1914, transited the Suez Canal, and reached Sydney on 24 May 1914. Although the submarines remained surfaced for almost all of the delivery voyage it was at the time the longest transit distance ever traveled by a submarine. At the outbreak of World War I, AE1 joined the naval forces assigned to the capture of the German Pacific colonies. With AE2, she took part in the operations leading to the occupation of German New Guinea, including the surrender of Rabaul on 13 September 1914." (Australian Navy website)The second Australian submarine AE2 launched in February 1914 was also ill-fated as it was sunk by the Turkish army in 1915. In December 2017, a search located the wreck of AE1 in 300 metres of water off the Duke of York Island group.Sepia photograph depicting the public attending the ceremony of Trafalgar Day in London on the 21 October 1914 when wreathes were left at the bottom of Nelson's column.
