A postcard to the Comradeship Committee when a Legatee was travelling in Germany. It is addressed to Legatee A L Gray, Chairman of the Comradeship Committee and dated 20 September 1994 and signed Ted L. The postcard is a picture of three men drinking beer from glass beer steins, which seems to be what the writer is referring to in the text. It says: "Dear Laurie, The Oktoberfest scene recalled our Comradeship gatherings and you can put your own names to the players. Personally I never knew that Leigh I. was left-handed nor that "Fearless Fred" only pretended to be unafraid of alcohol. A letter from Gerta Gillies to Legatee Aaron Bettie about the publication of the biography of Stan Savige. Mrs Gillies was the first instructor for girls classes. Legatee Aaron Beattie helped organise many of the early demonstrations. The letter says Mrs Gillies was thrilled to receive a copy of the book by W B Russell titled 'There goes a man'. She says: 'How can I convey in words how deeply touched I am at your gift of the book! What wonderful memories it calls up of the Great Man, General Savige. I also realise even he couldn't have made such as marvellous success if he had not been ably backed up by yourself and the men he gathered round him'. 1. A black leatherette softcover Holy Bible contains the Old and New Testaments with the title and publisher Oxford printed in gold lettering on the spine. There are five embossed double lines on the spine too. On the front cover at the bottom right there is printed in gold lettering J.H.L. At the back there is an Indexed Atlas to the Holy Bible with a List of maps and a List of Biblical Names. This is followed by twelve yellow and blue coloured maps of the Lands and Nations of the Bible. The pages have gilt edges. 348p. Inside the front right hand side endpaper written in small blue handwriting is a prayer as written in the Inscription box below. 2. This thank you card is from Thomas Rome (1873-1974) when he was celebrating his 100th birthday in 1973. Thomas Rome came to Warrnambool from Beechworth to work with John Younger in his Warrnambool store in 1888. He worked there for 17 years before opening his boot and shoe shop at 115 Liebig Street in 1907, retiring in 1962. Thomas Rome is remembered today not only for his long life and prominent Liebig Street business but also because of the sound recordings he made in 1896-7 at the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition. With an Edison phonograph machine he made sound recordings of local artists and these are regarded as one of the oldest, if not the oldest, surviving sound recordings made in Australia. This card with its envelope is of interest as it reminds us of the long life of a prominent Warrnambool identity of the late 19th century and the first 70 years of the 20th century. The card has T. J. Rome’s signature. Mrs Vera Giles was the recipient of the card a long-serving member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and, like Tommy Rome, a person who reached her 100th year and beyond. This is a small piece of white lightweight card folded into two to make a card. Inside is a handwritten and printed message from Tommy Rome on the occasion of his 100th birthday The envelope bears the post mark 18th September 1973 and is addressed to Mrs Giles. Envelope: ‘Mrs Giles, 3 Cyma Street, Warrnambool, Vic. 3280, a seven cent stamp and a handwritten note – ‘Tom Rome, ‘thank you’ 100th b’day’. They were made from 1913 and they probably weren't very expensive cameras. The Hawk-Eye No. 2 model C of 1913 was a simpler model with just one viewfinder, and no choice of aperture. This version was reissued in 1930 for Kodak's 50th anniversary: For this, the company offered a free Hawk-eye camera to any child of 12 in that year. Approximately 550,000 of these were issued.[A box camera is a simple type of camera, the most common form being a cardboard or plastic box with a lens in one end and film at the other. They were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The earliest Kodak's were simple box cameras which were sent to a local dealer after all the shots on the film inside were taken. The dealer developed the film and sent the photographs and the reloaded camera back to the photographer. While introducing a wide range of innovative features two designs dominated Kodak's cameras. The most famous of these was the Box Brownie, designed by Frank Brownell, and introduced at the cost of one dollar in 1900. Brownie's were produced in one form or another up until the 1960s when the Kodak Instamatic was introduced. A Cartridge Hawkeye No. 2 Box Camera. It i has a cardboard body and the body is covered in black leatherette. The camera is designed to be used with Kodak No 120 film. It is a rectangular box with a hole at the front (no lens). The shutter control is on the right side. The film winder is below the latch. The film window is at the back and there is a leather carrying handle at the top. In July 2013 Smeaton resident Ron Cosgrave offered to attempt to find Laura Villa. He wrote on 12/07/2013 "I have attached three photographs of Laura Villa as it is today. I am 100 % that it is the house in question. The changes are the veranda and numerous alterations and attachments. The key identifiers are the original roof line, the chimney, the trees and the background of the photo is the other side of Birch’s Creek with similar trees and the hill is Green Hill. It is located at the end of Elizabeth Street on the south side of the creek and at the Recreation Reserve." Three colour photographs of a weatherboard house.
