The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph - Photograph - Reproduction, c1994
This photograph was taken in 1994 and depicts four Commissioners of the newly formed Shire of Indigo. The Commissioners were appointed on 18 November 1994 and served until the the election of Indigo Shire Councillor's on 15 March, 1997. The United Shire of Beechworth was established in 1871 following the merger of two entities: the Borough of Beechworth, established in 1856, and the Shire of Beechworth, which was created as the union of the Stanley and Wooragee Road Districts in 1865. This photograph is historically significant for its depiction of newly elected Indigo Shire Commissioners, who replaced the former United of Beechworth Shire Council. The only local government entity remaining in Victoria styled as a 'United Shire' at its dissolution in November 1994, the amalgamation of the United Shire of Beechworth, along with parts of the Shires of Chiltern, Rutherglen and Yackandandah into the Shire of Indigo, was part of an extensive restructuring of Victoria's Local Government Areas in the 1990s. The Victorian Governments restructuring of LGA's in the 1990s constituted a major transition in Victoria's systems of local governance. The reforms dissolved over two hundred councils and sacked sixteen hundred elected councillors. The Shire of Indigo was one of seventy-eight new councils that were subsequently created through amalgamations.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper mounted on board.Reverse (original): Transcribed to DB / From left to right: Commissioner Kevin Gleeson ~ / Chairman of Commissioners, Mr Frank Burfitt ~ / Chief Executive Officer, Commissioner Kevin Crow, ~ / Commissioner Henry Brewer. / Commissioners were appointed to the Indigo Shire / on 18th November, 1994 and served until the / election of councillors on 15th March, 1997. / indigo shire council, shire councillors, indigo shire commissioners, governance, local government, beechworth, local representatives 1994-1997, lga restructuring, indigo shire amalgamation, victorian government, regional and rural governance, beechworth shire, yackandandah shire, chiltern shire, rutherglen shire -

Register, Survey & subdivision street index, 1930s
This is a book with the City of Warrnambool surveys and subdivisions listed under the street names. It covers the period from 1938 to 1975. The information is listed under the headings of plan number, street name, section, allotment, date and remarks. It will be very useful for researchers. This is a foolscap-size hard-cover book with a red cover with a mottled-blue pattern paper inside the covers. It has 95 pages with ruled red and blue lines. It has a handwritten alphabet index throughout the pages. The contents are handwritten in blue, green and black ink. The inside binding has been mended with adhesive tape and one page is loose. hairbrush, 1930's
Celluloid was the first plastic. The first Celluloid experiments began in 1856 by Alexander Parkes in Birmingham, England. Later in the same year, he patented his invention "Parkesine". By 1868, no advancement was achieved, and Parkes' labor and efforts were ended. In 1869, Englishman Daniel Stills created a company called Xylonite to experiment and create a product similar to Parkesine. These efforts ended in 1874 when Stills went bankrupt. Celluloid / xylonite was made into toiletry articles, novelties, photographic film, and many other mass-produced goods. Its popularity began to wane only toward the middle of the 20th century, following the introduction of plastics based on entirely synthetic polymers. Set of Braun's craniotomy forceps used by Box Hill Hospital labour ward, Allen & Hanburys, England
Carl Rudolph Braun (1823-1891) was the inventor of this instrument, as well as a type of decapitation hook. Braun was born and practiced in Austria, and followed Semmelweis as assistant to Klein at the Vienna Maternity Clinic in 1847, before becoming its head in 1856. Braud added a gynaecology section to the clinic in 1858, being convinced that obstetrics and gynaecology should be together. (Source: Baskett, Thomas. 'On the Shoulders of Giants: Eponyms and Names in Obstetrics and Gynaecology'). This device was included with a range of other obstetric instruments, mostly destructive instruments, given to RANZCOG from Box Hill Hospital labour ward in February- March 1998. The maternity service at Box Hill Hospital combined with St George's hospital in Kew to be known as Birralee Maternity Service. These instruments were collected by Julie Collette, Unit Manager, St George's Kew and given to RANZCOG Museum Curator, Susan Barnett.Craniotomy forceps, Braun's. Melbourne Legacy
Newspaper - Article, The Hibernian Hall - Glory of the 'Nineties
An article about the old Hibernian Hall that was once owned by Legacy (from 1944 to 1954) at 342 Swanston Street. The building was bought with a donation from an American, Richard Goldsmith, in memory of David H Dureau. It was unsuitable for Legacy's needs and Legacy remained at their premises in 45 Market St until this building was sold in 1954 and the proceeds used to buy 293 Swanston St in 1956. The exact date of the article is not known -probably 1956 - after it was acquired by RMIT (at that stage called Royal Melbourne Technical College) and the article mentions the renovations underway. The article was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. Legatee Cyril Smith and others were detailing their experiences and knowledge for the future.Newspaper article about a property once owned by Legacy in Swanston st.dureau house, properties -
