Photo of Senator Barney Cooney (standing on left) with the recipients of two new wheelchairs. Senator Cooney represented the Department of Veterans Affairs when he presented the wheelchairs and a cheque for $7,000 to President George Woodward at Legacy House. The article in the Answer newsletter mentions: 'The grant of $7,000 will greatly assist Legacy's programs by covering the cost of bus hire needed for the regular outings organised during the year and the wheelchairs will provide additional assistance allowing more Junior Legatees to participate in activities.' After the presentation the junior Legatees went to the cinema and 10 pin bowling. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents were invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aimed to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp this also gave the mothers some respite. A photo of the Annual demonstration from October 1954. This photo shows the dancers around a Christmas tree. The costumes include ballerinas, golliwogs, tin soldiers, fairies and elaborate dresses. Also frogs or lizards, sugar plum fairies, rabbits, cossack dancers and cats or foxes. A similar routine was performed in 1952 as described in a newsletter. It mentions the routine as 'Toy makers dream' and had golliwogs and soldiers and Father Christmas. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. Three black and white photos of a group of girls in elaborate costumes on the stage of the Melbourne Town Hall for an Annual Demonstration. It shows a girl dressed as a spider in a large spiderweb with other girls dancing below. This routine was done multiple times over the years. These three appear to be the same year based on the set and camera angle. One of the photos was published in the December 1946 newsletter so the year was 1946. They were in an album of press photos taken during dress rehearsals from the 1940s and 1950s. EDHS Newsletter No. 275 April 2024 The Shire of Eltham was established in 1871 and ceased to exist, due to a municipal restructure, when all councillors were sacked on 15 December 1994, which is 30 years ago this December. At this meeting, Jim Connor will provide a presentation about From Eltham to Nillumbik Shires - a personal perspective. Jim has been active in the local community for over 40 years and was the last councillor elected to the Shire of Eltham. Following the restructure he became a member of the Nillumbik Shire Council Planning Special Committee, which included three commissioners and three community members, and was also chair of the Nillumbik Disability Advisory Committee. In both roles he obtained insights into the early operation of the new council. These two booklets were personal copies of a piece of writing by Stan Baulch. They tell of the use of bullocks as transport carriers in the early years of the 20th century and of those colourful characters, the bullock drivers or bullockies. Stanley Samuel Baulch (1897-1979) was the grandson of pioneer settlers in the Kirkstall area, Francis and Ann Baulch. In the early 1840s the property of Dunmore, situated between Macarthur and Port Fairy was acquired by Charles Macknight and partners and in the late 19th century a portion of this run was acquired by the Baulch family. The information regarding bullock teams mainly comes from the years spent at the properties of Rose Park near Orford and Dunmore by Stan Baulch and was originally given as a talk to members of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society at a meeting in 1976. In a Society newsletter at the time Stan Baulch was described as ‘a good and faithful member’, being a foundation member from the time of the Society’s establishment in 1966.These booklets are of great interest, firstly as a personal account of the use of bullocks as carriers in the Western District of Victoria in the early 20th century and secondly as personal copies of a piece of writing from a prominent member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in the mid 1970s. .1 This is a soft cover booklet of 16 pages. It has a red cover with an image of a bullock yoke and black printing on the front cover. Two Legacy widows from Warragul area. They were photographed when they visited Legacy House and appeared in the July 1992 Widows' Newsletter. On the right is Bernice Dimmock (nee Jones). Bernice was secretary of Warragul Legacy Widows Club. She was also a veteran, as she served overseas in World War 2. Bernice has an interview recorded by the ABC for 'Australians at War' on their website. Keesing Photographers took a series of photos on the same day of various ladies and some were committee members at different clubs. Presumably there had a been a meeting at Legacy House of members from the many clubs (including Hampton, Highett, Caufield). It is assumed that the date was 1991 due to the reference number from the photographic studio 911030B-14 could mean 30 October 1991, along with 00645, 00646, 00648, 00649, 00650, 00651 and 00661-00666. The Club was located behind the Kew Recreation Hall at 12-16 Wellington Street, Kew. The file contains both primary and secondary sources. Primary sources include twelve annual reports (1984-85 to 1988-89; 1990-1 to 1996-97); sundry copies of the Club’s newsletter - ‘Kew View’ from the period 1980-95; magazines celebrating the inaugural and second annual ‘Kew Cup’ (1992-93); ephemera such as the programs for the Centenary Dinner (1980); the Club’s Constitution (1987); and research notes and newspaper articles/clippings. The file also includes two copies of the Club’s history. A number of documents relate to the proposed sale of the land by Boroondara Council in 2001. In 2020, KHS accepted into its collection the entire collection and archives of the Kew Bowling Club. This is Vol. 8 of the Moorabbin Mirror produced by CMHS members Fran & Holger Bader , Valma Sharp November 2016 The Moorabbin Mirror reflects the history and heritage of the former City of Moorabbin — derived from Mooroobin, ‘a resting place’ in the Bunurrung spoken language. In 1994, the City of Moorabbin was integrated into the Cities of Bayside, Glen Eira, Kingston and Monash. Dr.Rosalie Triolo will give a talk for members on Nov. 27th about Local School Teachers in the 1st AIF CMHS AGM Oct 30th. Mrs Valma Sharp retired from Committee and CMHS The Committee proposed a vote of thanks in appreciation of Valma's long , loyal service to CMHS,Box Cottage Museum . Subscriptions for NEW members will be $15 from January 2017. Next AGM will be July 30th 2017 to coincide with the end of the financial year. Due to the cost of ink and postage the CMHS Newsletter Moorabbin Mirror will be available in pdf via email, CMHS website and Victorian Collections website . Orbost & District Historical Societymedal, 1928
This medal was presented to J.G.Ralston by the Orbost Cricket Club in 1929 for Fielding. John Gavin Ralston was born 26 July 1914 at Eden, N.S.W. and came to Orbost in the early 1920's, with his parents and siblings. They lived at the corner of Tennyson and Salisbury Streets. Jack was educated at Orbost Higher Elementary School before being apprenticed to William Ross at the Snowy River Mail as a lino-type operator. He married Jean Cameron. After WW11 when he served overseas in the islands) He resumed his trade at the Snowy River Mail until 1949 when began J.G.& J.M. Ralston, Seed & Produce Merchants. Jack Ralston was very involved in the Orbost sporting community, the Presbyterian Church and the Orbost Municipal Band. He also served in the Orbost sub-branch of the R.S.L. He died on April 15 1967. In the centre is an embossed picture of a batsman at the wicket. This is inside a circle. The bottom edge is decorated with leaves. The medal is inside a thin leather look wooden box which is hinged and has a push button metal latch. The box is brown and the inside lid is padded.on back - OCC At bottom - 9 ct Presented to J.G. Tonghi Creek is 66km north - west of Orbost. Prior to the sealing of the Princes Highway west of Orbost, the road surface was anything but good, even by C1917 when cars started to use the road. From Orbost the old road via Marlo to Sydenham was abandoned for the new location which traversed more rugged country via Cabbage Tree, Bell Bird and Club Terrace to Cann River, and the reason for this diversion was on account of settlements being established at Murrungowar and Club Terrace, at which latter place there was a temporary rush to obtain gold. This road was constructed by the Public Works department and a maximum grade of 1 in 19 was adopted, and as speed was not to be catered for the grade followed in and out round the spurs and gullies, resulting in a maze of turns and twists which required a good deal of skill on the part of the horse driver to negotiate." - Bairnsdale Advertiser, Friday, May 2, 1947. Eltham Community Festival, 4-13 August 1978 Second photo of 5 ladies very motion blurred but ladies named are L to R: Edi Levi, Joyce Finster, Thelma Smith, Jean Spencer, Norma Williams. Newsletter No. 3 September 1978 Eltham Community Festival. This year’s Eltham Community Festival was held from August 4th to 13th. The society was involved with the Warrandyte Historical Society in arranging an exhibition at the Community Centre and also provided notes and a map for a self-guided walking tour of historic buildings and locations around Eltham. Copies of notes will continue to be available from the Eltham Shire Offices and the tour may be under-taken at any time. The exhibition was divided into two sections. The Eltham Society displayed early photographs associated with the walking tour, whilst the Warrandyte Society showed their photographs and artefacts of the Warrandyte gold era. An outstanding feature was the large "blow-up" photos of early Warrandyte. Newsletter No. 3 September 1978 Eltham Community Festival. This year’s Eltham Community Festival was held from August 4th to 13th. The society was involved with the Warrandyte Historical Society in arranging an exhibition at the Community Centre and also provided notes and a map for a self-guided walking tour of historic buildings and locations around Eltham. Copies of notes will continue to be available from the Eltham Shire Offices and the tour may be under-taken at any time. The exhibition was divided into two sections. The Eltham Society displayed early photographs associated with the walking tour, whilst the Warrandyte Society showed their photographs and artefacts of the Warrandyte gold era. An outstanding feature was the large "blow-up" photos of early Warrandyte. The seed bean industry was a major industry in the Orbost district for the first half of the 20th century. The total area sown with beans for seed at Orbost was estimated to be about 1000 acres. Fisher Bros, grew or supervised the growing of approximately one quarter of the bean seed produced at Orbost, and, in addition, prepared for market and sold a considerable quantity for other growers. From Newsletter February 2015 : "the Fishers took over the old Butter Factory in Lochiel Street. They had sorting tables there in the 1920s. In Orbost, the Fishers had a Shell fuel depot at the back of the bean factory. The Fishers were very enterprising people, very smart. One of their uncles is supposed to have invented the knot that was used to tie the sheaves of hay in the fields. At their Lochend Barn, they had a Blackstone engine which ran on oil. They used to light a fire under it and hot it up to start it. Orbost & District Historical Societybook, P.W.M.U Cookery Book, 1962
This copy was used by Jean Ralston (nee Cameron) of Orbost. She was married to Jack Ralston. John Gavin Ralston was born 26 July 1914 at Eden, N.S.W. and came to Orbost in the early 1920's, with his parents and siblings. They lived at the corner of Tennyson and Salisbury Streets. Jack was educated at Orbost Higher Elementary School before being apprenticed to William Ross at the Snowy River Mail as a lino-type operator. He married Jean Cameron. After WW11 when he served overseas in the islands) He resumed his trade at the Snowy River Mail until 1949 when began J.G.& J.M. Ralston, Seed & Produce Merchants. Jack Ralston was very involved in the Orbost sporting community, the Presbyterian Church and the Orbost Municipal Band. He also served in the Orbost sub-branch of the R.S.L. He died on April 15 1967. (ref. Margaret Smith O.D.H.S. Newsletter) This item reflects community affiliation with the Presbyterian Church as well as being a popular domestic reference item for many households. A photo of the internment of the coffin of the Unknown Australian Solider in the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The coffin is flanked by pall bearers from each of the defence forces. The official Party, including the Prime Minister, Hon Paul Keating MP, looks on and veterans are seated. There are two Junior Legatees present, they were Rebecca and John Healey of Canberra. There was in article in The Answer newsletter in June 1994. The Unknown Australian Soldier was interred in the Hall of Memory on 11 November 1993. He was buried in a Tasmanian blackwood coffin, on which were placed a bayonet and a sprig of wattle. Soil from the Pozières battlefield in France was scattered in his tomb. The tombstone later placed on top of the tomb has the inscription: “An unknown Australian soldier killed in the war of 1914–1918”. At the head of the tomb is inscribed “Known unto God” and at the foot, “He is all of them and he is one of us.” (details taken from awm.gov.au)A record of Junior Legatees being present at the interring of the Unknown Soldier at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Photos from a reunion of Junior Legatees at Watsonia Barracks in 1991. Photos include Legatee Grattan and Miss Enez Domec-Carre together and with groups of former junior legatees. Also in attendance was Sir Weary Dunlop and Legacy President John Swan (white hair and blue jumper) and his wife. Another photo shows Joan Miller with another lady. Other names unknown. From an article in the Widows' Newsletter in July 1991 it is a Grand Reunion at Watsonia Army Barracks in May for former Junior Legatees. Over 350 people attended. There were games for children, spit roasts and the renewing of friendships between former Junior Legatees and the Legatees. An article in the Herald Sun on Friday 17 May 1991 promoted the event using a photo of Ron Barassi and L/ Chas Munnerley mentioned the reunion was Sunday 19 May (item 01529). Two more photos are at 01015. It was with a scrapbook of photos from 1983 to 1991. A photo of senior girls in a scene from an annual demonstration. The girls were dressed as native American girls, some are in a kayak and others stand near totem poles. One of these two photos was used in the July 1954 newsletter to highlight the work of the girls classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Miss Enez Domec-Carre was the supervisor of girls classes and instrumental in the Annual Demonstration for many years. She joined Melbourne Legacy in 1932 and became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65 in 1970.A record of the set and costumes used at the Annual Demonstrations. From an article in The Answer newsletter December 1995 edition there was a Remembrance tour to Canberra for widows in 1995. 1995 was the 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II and there were remembrance events all over Australia as part of 'Australia Remembers'. The ladies are standing at the Changi War Memorial, Duntroon. The article says: "On 5th August, 32 members of various Legacy Clubs journeyed to Canberra on a 4 day Remembrance Tour. A wonderful time was had by all. The whole tour was wonderfully organised. We got off to a very cold and wet start, even to snow on the way, but by the time we reached our Motel the sun was out and it remained out all the time were were there. The highlights of my trip personally were Duntroon, The War Museum and Parliament House. It was great to met all the other Club Members and to establish friendships. Photo of Senator Barney Cooney presenting a cheque to Legacy in front of a gathering of Legacy disabled dependents. Also some of the mothers gathered to watch. Senator Cooney represented the Department of Veterans Affairs when he presented two wheelchairs and a cheque for $7,000 to President George Woodward at Legacy House. The article in the Answer newsletter mentions: 'The grant of $7,000 will greatly assist Legacy's programs by covering the cost of bus hire needed for the regular outings organised during the year and the wheelchairs will provide additional assistance allowing more Junior Legatees to participate in activities.' After the presentation the junior Legatees went to the cinema and 10 pin bowling. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents were invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aimed to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp this also gave the mothers some respite. Wall display of photographs and cabinets of books as part of the Bicentennial/Heritage Week Display, "The Eltham Tradition", held in the Eltham Shire Office, 17-22 April 1988 by EDHS. The Alistair Knox Collection is a series of mounted enlarged photos of about forty images mud brick houses and related subjects. The collection is understood to have been put together by Alistair Knox although it is the work of several unacknowledged photographers. For some years it was held by the Building Department of the former Eltham Shire Council and was then passed to EDHS. Some of the photos have been used in Knox's books. Alistair Knox (1912 - 1986) is acknowledged as the founder of Eltham's mud brick building movement. Many of the buildings shown in the collection are of his design and he was also involved with the construction of several of them. Others are the work of his contemporaries and associates such as Peter Glass, Gordon Ford, and John Harcourt.
