This six-postcard group is the first in a series of records of items in the collection of Edgar Dawson DCM. Dawson was the Regimental Sergeant Major of 57th Battalion, AIF. The 57th had a company of men largely from Bendigo and Eaglehawk. These postcards are from his personal album. Many are annotated in Dawson's hand with explanatory notes on the subject. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. R.S.L. is the Returned and Services League of Australia, a member based charity founded in 1916, and the largest veterans' charity in Australia. It provides a support network and community for veterans and their families. They have a commemorative service each year on 25th April, ANZAC Day.The Mt Beauty RSL committee members in 1949 is a list of people living in Mt Beauty at the time and who were working as a support team for veterans and their families. The ANZAC crowd at the temporary memorial indicate the interest in the town for a commemoration and the need for a more permanent structure.Both Black & White large photos. 1. The district of Strathfieldsaye was proclaimed in 1861 and named a Shire on the 17th September in 1866. It remained a shire until amalgamation in 1994 when it became part of the City of Greater Bendigo. The shire was located 8 km to the south- east of Bendigo and covered an area of 601 square kilometres and extended from the Calder Highway to the Coliban and Campaspe Rivers. The 8th Light Horse was initially raised from companies of the colonial Victorian Mounted Rifles located in North-east Victoria following Federation. In 1912 a major reorganisation of the Australian military forces resulted in the regiment being renumbered 16th Light Horse. The Regiment was disbanded in 1919 but soon after was re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, with the territorial title Indi Light Horse. The Indi Light Horse consisted of 3 squadrons. A squadron consisted of troops in Corryong, Walwa, Tallangatta, Eskdale and Wodonga. After an extensive recruiting campaign in January 1939 a new troop was raised in Bethanga, Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. Wodonga Bowling Club was formally constituted in September 1925 . Percy Lingford was elected as the first president and Edward William Owens the first secretary. The site of the club was leased from the Shire Council for one shilling per annum. With the assistance of voluntary labour a four-rink green was laid and a pavilion. The club was officially opened by Percy Lingford on the 23 October 1926 The membership for the first year was 43 and the membership fee £2/2/0. At the first Annual General Meeting held in September 1926 Mick Martin was elected President, a position he held for the next 22 years. After catering for men's events over many years, and being permitted to play only socially, in 1949 the Ladies' (Associates) Section was formally constituted with Doll Connell the first president and May Hicks the first secretary. A surplus Army hut was purchased and moved in from Bonegilla and members converted it into a comfortable clubhouse. Over the years Wodonga has had many outstanding players who have won an array of association and group events and the club also has had a particularly high representation in group sides at both the district and State level. This Cat No 5880P and the following ten Cat No's to 5890P were part of the original GRINTON PHOTOGRAPHS exhibition in 2008. Each frame follows a story from the 'War to Home' at Tragowel near Kerang, Victoria. The Grinton Collection was a large negative collection found in a tin at Myers Flat and developed from there. Frame 1. 1. Jack Grinton in full marching order. This appears to have been taken after Jack came back from being wounded the 2nd time on 31/9/1918 in the push into the Hindenburgh Line. He was away 3 months with his wounds and rejoined his unit at Visme-au-Val on 11/1/1919, a small village near Abbeville, France. he is wearing his two "Empire Wounded Stripes" on his arm. It is believed he took this photo to show what a fully kitted out digger looked like. 2. Full kit lid out, right down to a tooth brush. It is also believed this was taken to go with the above photo. Note the protective cover on the rifle trigger and magazine area. 3. Mess parade line up. From notes of Jack this could be at "Gamaches", France where the last group of 111 men of the 38th Batt in the 45th quota left to come home. They went from Gamaches to Havre then to England. 4. In "Billets" behind the lines. Note the straw on the floor. When a unit came out of the line they were billeted in farm houses, barns, sheds, homes and at times anything that would give the men shelter from the elements.
