Medal - 1873 International Exhibition Medal, G. T Morgan, 1873
In 1791 Prague organized the first World's Fair, Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic). The first industrial exhibition was on the occasion of the coronation of Leopold II as a king of Bohemia, which took place in Clementinum, and celebrated the considerable sophistication of manufacturing methods in the Czech lands during that time period. The French tradition of national exhibitions culminated with the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 held in Paris. This fair was followed by other national exhibitions in Europe. In 1851, under the title "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations", the World Expo was held in The Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, the United Kingdom. The Great Exhibition, as it is often called, was an idea of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband, and is usually considered to be the first international exhibition of manufactured products. It influenced the development of several aspects of society, including art-and-design education, international trade and relations, and tourism. This expo was the precedent for the many international exhibitions, later called World Expos, that have continued to be held to the present time. (source; Wikipedia) Commemorative medal. book, Smith, Elder & Co, The Early Years of H.R.H. the Prince Consort, 1869
This book was originally written for private circulation among the Royal Family. It was written by Lieutenant-General Charles Grey (1804-1870) and was first published in 1867. It was commissioned by Queen Victoria. Grey had been secretary to both Albert and herself. Contents were sourced from letters and memoranda. This book was a significant contemporary record of the royal family. Originally Queen Victoria had attempted to record "an exact account" of hers and Albert's happy marriage but was unable to complete the project on her own. She commissioned Grey to compile it under her supervision, firstly for the royal family and then for public release. It was an outstanding sucess with many editions being necessary.A 469 page book which has green cloth board covers with gilt lettering on the spine and decorative gilt motifs on the front and rear boards. Compiled by Lieutenant - General Charles Grey, it details Prince Albert's life from his birth through to his wedding to Queen Victoria and the first year of their married life. on 4th page in - handwritten - "T. Photograph, Surrey Hills Station and car park
There are 3 tracks; the third track was built in 1971, which gives an approximate date for the photo. At this time the original station buildings were demolished and replaced by buildings constructed from concrete bricks and a second subway replaced the overhead footbridge. According to Roderick Smith, a local railway enthusiast, originally there had been 3 railway houses at the Mont Albert end of the northern car park. These were demolished to extend the car park. Certainly 8 Bedford Avenue, built as the station master's house was demolished at this time. The palm tree had been planted in the station master's front garden and was retained in a small garden bed within the car park. A black and white photograph of a station with cars parked on both sides of the 3 tracks. A Harris train is departing the station heading towards Mont Albert. Photograph - Sister Hughes' Private Hospital in Wodonga
Sister Hughes’ Private Hospital on the corner of High and Stanley Streets, Wodonga operated between 1922 and 1938. The building was constructed as a family home for Albert Schlink, a storekeeper in 1909. The building was first used as a private hospital in 1919 starting with Nurse Eliza Browne. It had six or seven rooms, one of which was an operating theatre. There was a walkway, then three bedrooms and a bathroom that belonged to the hospital all in the one area. A small building at the back served as a self-contained flat. Catherine Josephine Hughes' sister Mabel earlier married into the Schlink family and came from Bendigo to take over the Lease on the hospital in 1922. Apart from Sister Hughes, there were Nurses Poyntz and Costello. Three domestic staff were also employed – a cleaner Elsie Enever, the cook Mrs Baker and Mrs Kimball who did the laundry. Nurses Poyntz and Costello took charge of the hospital in 1938 and Catherine Hughes continued to be listed as a nurse on the electoral roll until 1954. In the early 1940s she conducted a business in the “lolly shop” in High Street, south of St Augustine’s Church. The Private Hospital in High Street possibly closed in 1954 with the opening of the Wodonga Hospital in Vermont Street. The images are significant because they represent a building and nurses who served an important role in the Wodonga community in the early 20th century.A set of black and white photos of Sister Hughes Hospital in Wodonga and some of the staff. The architect's plans of the original house, designed for Albert Schlink are included.sister hughes wodonga, hospitals wodonga -
