These type of tobacco pouches were used mostly by the outdoor/outback type of male. They were a product of an earlier period in time when males in the outback were considered "red back" adventurers. This pouch is more of a statement than a useful tobacco pouch. It comes from a younger time in bush folk law when the outback appearances was in fashion and before the "new age" male emerged(circa early 1900s).This tobacco pouch was admired in the outback scene and spoke of adventure and "the wild". It was a time when travel in the outback was, in the top end of Australia especially, considered unsafe and "frontier" type adventure filled environment. It was a time when colloquially speaking 'men were men', in other words tough and resourceful, and could tackle anything. This attitude was more so in isolated country areas such as in the Kiewa Valley before "the sensitive new age" male evolved. The pouch presents the early presentation of the outback male as rugged, independent and resourceful. The Kiewa Valley and the tobacco fields, especially during the construction stages of the Hydro Electricity Scheme, was the right environment for such a display.This tobacco pouch is the bottom or main containment pouch for rubbed tobacco leaf to be smoked either as "roll your own" cigarettes or in a pipe. The pouch is of crocodile skin and is light brown on one side and darker brown on the other. The pocket is fashioned with the top section curved to allow fingers to remove the top cover, see KVHS 0059(2). The pocket has fine, but strong stitching holding the bottom and sides together. It is made of relatively medium thick hide and the crocodile markings are both outside and inside. Pipe smoking has been in vogue for centuries, and in Australia it was a symbol of the "discerning smoker" such as the landed gentry, men of professional status or student. This pipe, however,of the "corncob" style, would have suited the younger professional or student/undergraduate(male or female) of the mid and late 1900s because it was relatively inexpensive to purchase and was regarded as a "beginners pipe". It is the type of pipe well suited to the rural backdrop. In the late 1900s, with the health related restrictions placed on public smoking these tobacco pipes were not immune from the legislation, and even though the pipe smoke was not as offensive as cigarette smoke it still came under the umbrella of smoking. Pipes were also used in the process of inhaling illicit drugs i.e. marijuana, but this use was limited to a very few. Smoking in the second millennium is being phased out as a social habit in Australia but may affect the few "private" smoker and has, as the United States prohibition era (alcoholic drinks) did, spawn an illicit trade in cheap contraband tobacco.This type of pipe lends itself well to the rural setting of the Kiewa Valley and although it is a bit rough in appearance its corncob barrel blended into the environment. The Kiewa Valley region was up until the late 1900s part of the Australian Tobacco Industry and the levels of men smoking pipes was enhanced by the ready supply, "off the fields", of tobacco leaves and the attitude to city based smoking restrictions was one of resentment.This pipe has a straight stem and its "style" is corncob. Originally made from corn cobs the pipe was light in weight and easy to hold in the mouth. The pipe has a permanent filter and a black coloured tin band at the stem/shank junction. The stem fits into the wooden shank which is fastened into the bowl. The stem is made from clear plastic (orange in colour). This stem is longer(70mm) than the shank(45mm). Taken in the early 1900s, the postcard depicts two girls dressed in old style, white knee length dress which was common for this period for young women. This compared to the ankle length styles which were acceptable for adult women. We can also see an example of early bridge construction and engineering, notably made from timber rather than from stone or steel, noted in the postcard as Snow's Bridge. Simple night caps had been worn by women in the 1800s for practical purposes such as to keep warm at night. In the early 1900s silk boudoir caps became popular to protect hairstyles while sleeping. It was also thought to maintain or even improve the condition of the hair. This boudoir cap was amongst the belongings of the donor's Great Aunts who were both dressmakers at the original Terang & District Co-Op which was established in 1908.Socially this item is significant as an example of women's headwear from the early 1900s. Historically this item holds significance as a possession of the donor’s Great Aunts who worked as dressmakers at the original Terang & District Co-Op established in 1908.The boudoir cap is constructed of cream silk with a pale floral pattern. A cream crocheted border and top insert are attached using hand stitching. The small ruffle is machine stitched. This item is from the "Barone" Collection. "Barone" (also known as "Seaview") was a stately Brighton home built at 9 Moule Avenue prior to 1855 and demolished in 1986. The house's residents included Edward Elgin Browne (during 1859-72), a Melbourne tea merchant, and the family and descendants of retired Scottish Army captain Archibald Black (during the period 1880-1970). Its neighbors included “St Ninians” owned by the Ward- Cole family, “Seacombe” owned by the Moule family, and the home of James Grahame and his family. The items in the "Barone" collection were largely donated by two of the house's later owners, Mrs Doris Halkyard and Mrs Brian Brandt.A pair of black wool twill women's jodhpurs from late 1800s to early 1900s. The jodhpurs feature a flat flap-front that buttons on either hip with four buttons on either side. The cut of the leg is full tapering through shaped panels to a slim fit over the calf. At the centre front of the leg at the shin, the pant leg is laced closed and finished with brown binding. From the back, the pant hangs loose and full over the bottom, tapering to a slim fit over the calf. Note: These jodhpurs are not a matching piece of the riding habit T0002.1. Historically the bodice is representative of a style from the early 1900s.As a hand sewn item it is significant to demonstrate the craftsmanship and textiles used in that time period.Deep pink bodice with velvet and lace at collar. Velvet ribbon and lace border on bodice edge next to sleeves, the edging goes from the front of the bodice and over to the back. Seven white mother-of-pearl buttons down the front and pintucks across the top back of the bodice. The sleeve cuffs have a lace border and are closed using hooks and eyes. The bodice is lined, with the lining visibly stitched to the back of the bodice at waist level. In the early 1900s black marble was being mined in the Bruthen district. Some was used for the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne and Australia House in London. 900 tonnes were shipped to London to be included in the construction of Australia House. This photograph shows the last 120 ton slab to be used to complete the sixteen dark Buchan marble Ionic columns in the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. The Shrine of Remembrance was created to meet the needs of a grieving community after the extensive loss of lives in the First World War (1914 –18). Marble quarrying has been a significant part of the history of Buchan in East Gippsland.
