Document, Colony of Victoria, Gold License, 1852
From 1851 the Victorian government required all men on Victorian Goldfields to carry a Gold License. The fee was one pound per month, and was payable in advance. There was agitation surrounding the gold license which was thought to be an excessive fee and did not give the bearer right to representation. On 03 December 1854 the gold diggers on the Eureka Lead fought a short battle against the army and police troopers. A few months later a new system of taxing gold diggers was introduced - the Miner's Right. The Gold License c allowed the bearer to 'dig, search for, and remove gold on and from any Crown Lands' within the district specified on the license. The license was not transferable, and had to be produced on demand. This has resulted in most surviving licenses showing evidence of having been folded and kept in a pocket. The Victorian Gold Licence was issued from 1851 until early 1855. Every man on a Victorian goldfield had to carry a valid gold license, so few survived the harsh treatment of being carried around a working goldfield. There was much dissatisfaction about what was thought to be an unfair mining tax (or gold license). On 29 November 1854 Ballarat miners burnt their licenses on Bakery Hill. On 3 December 1854 the Eureka Stockade Battle took place, resulting in the Goldfields Commission. The first Miner's Right was issued in late June 1855, and in July the first Local Courts were elected by miner's right holders. This gold license was issued around one year after the issue of the first Victorian gold license in August 1851, making it a rare early survivor. This fold lines on this Gold License are evidence of being carried around by the bearer. A original Victorian paper gold license glued onto on old card poster. The original colour of the paper was pale blue. The license has undergone conservation treatment and has been removed from the card.'231', '9 Nov 1852', [name illegible], 'Lod dist [Loddon District?], [Commissioner illegible - probably M. Correspondence, Eureka Reserve Committee to City of Ballarat, 1956, 28/0281956
The Eureka Stockade Memorial Park Committee was a voluntary group that worked towards commemorating the Eureka Stockade by caring for the Reserve and organising events there. Three page carbon copy of a letter from the Eureka Stockade Memorial Park Committee to the City of Ballarat Town Clerk. The carbon copy is not signed. The letter was written because the Committee were not satisfied with the action of the Council in relation to the Eureka Reserve in relation to parking. The letter starts as follows: "The Town Clerk City Hall Ballarat Dear Sir, After many years of harmonious cooperation between your Council and the above it is with regret and misgivings that we are forced to protest at any action of the City Council in regard to the Eureka Reserve. At out last meeting by an almost unanimous vote it was decided to protest at the erection of a line of posts north and south of the Kiosk excluding cares from the flat. For many years we have striven to popularise and improve the reserve by the voluntary effort and a lot of personal expense by members. Realising that we are living in a motor age, our plans have always included the provifing of adequate parking facilities for car Picnic Partites the providing of picnic tables etc in shady positions with easy access for cars. This privilege has been appreciated and enjoyed by the public for over 20 years, being perhaps the main attraction to the Eureka Stockade. It was with a feeling of frustration that we learned of teh Council's decision to exclude the cars from these facilities. The majority of my member are deeply hurt that your council should approve of such drastic change of policy without some consideration of the aims and future plans of this organisation. ... Poster, Public Meeting at Ballarat to Fight TAFE Cuts, June 2012
... ballarat trades hall Eureka eureka stockade union .1) A brown ...In October 2011 the Ballieu Government announced funding cuts to public and private technical training organisations as a cost saving measure. The government reduced funding for seven subject areas including business and clerical, finance and hospitality, totaling $300 million across the state. During a visit to Ballarat on 15 June 2012 Premier Ted Ballieu was met by hundreds of protestors angry at the TAFE cuts. It was expected that the Ballarat TAFE sector would be cut by $20million (or 40%), and up to 60 TAFE programs would be cut. A report in 'The Australian' on 01 June 2012 projected the TAFE cuts would result in the loss of almost 2000 jobs across the state. 'If the projections are correct, Victorian college redundancies would dwarf those in manufacturing and aviation, matching the worst predictions of job losses across Australia's entire banking sector.' Ballarat's National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and the Ballarat Trades and Labor Council (BTLC) are following up their earlier protest campaigns with a monster meeting to be held at Ballarat Trades Hall, Camp Street on Sunday 8 July. The monster meetings will take place in close proximity to Bakery Hill where over 10,000 diggers protested against an the gold license system in 1854. .1) A brown and black Monster Meeting poster based on the Eureka Monster Meeting poster.
