These bottles may have been in use in the 1940's or earlier. Cordial drinks came in bottles bought at a local grocery store. The shape of the bottles changed as did the stopper or seal. Bottles were recycled remaining the property of the manufacturer - 1. O.T. Ltd., Australia and 2. Lemos Australia in these samples. It appears these bottles may have the remains of a soft drink or cordial which is now dark in colour. Two vintage glass bottles: 1. A clear glass bottle with an embossed decorative leaf pattern around the neck. It has a rusted metal cap. 2. An embossed diagonal square patterned clear glass bottle with a rusted screw top lid. In 1900 this shop was a stationer's and newsagency owned by George Smith. It was then owned by Annie Nicholls (afterwards Annie Brown), and later by Ruby and John Sandow. Their daughter Kitty married Reg Jennings and the shop became known as "Jennings' Milk Bar". The shop evolved into a grocery/general store/confectioners. Richard Bell was born in Dumfermline, Scotland in 1850, arriving in Victoria with his family as a child. He worked at the grocery store of W.L. Wilson, Skipton Street, Sebastopol for six years before opening his own grocery business on the corner of Drummond and South Streets, Ballarat. The business was successful and he retired 15 years later. He was elected to the Ballarat City Council in 1891, and in 1892 he started an auctioneering and sharebroking business in partnership with Mr Lambert. Organisations such as the Ballarat Woollen Company and the Ballarat Tramway Board benefited from Richard Bell's association with them, and he was the Director of many mining companies. He was a member of the Old Colonists' Association of Ballarat, the Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute and the Commercial Club. Richard Bell was interest in erecting statues in Sturt Street to the memory of the poets Burns and Moore, and served on the relevant committee to that end. He was a long term truster of the Miners' Association, and took a very active part in the South Street Debating Society. In April 1874 Richard Bell married Jessie Scott, and the couple had two sons and seven daughters. This tin once contained Rawleigh's Allspice, a cooking ingredient. It was donated with other similar tins that were used by the donor’s mother who was married in 1932. It those times in Australia all manner of household items, including food and drink, were sold by hawkers (salesmen) who travelled from door to door in both suburban and rural areas. The donor remembered the tin on her mother’s pantry shelf. The Rawleigh Nutmegs label stated “Selected whole nutmegs not ground but granulated to preserve full strength and flavour.” The company had operated in Melbourne, Australia, and Wellington, New Zealand. W.T. Rawleigh & Co. was established by William Rawleigh in America in 1889 and later expanded into Australia. The company made a variety of household products in a factory in Collins Place, Melbourne, between 1930 and 1935. It specialised in medicines and remedies, food additives, cleaning products and toiletries. The company in Melbourne expanded into their factory in Dawson Street, Brunswick, in the mid-1930s. Independent salesmen, often referred to as ‘The Rawleigh’s man’, sold Rawleigh products door-to-door between the wars and after the Second World War in the Melbourne suburbs. Rayleigh’s products are still produced today. The tin is significant for its association with W.T Rawleigh, one of Melbourne’s strong growing manufacturers in period particularly between the World Wars. Rawleigh’s was, and still is, well known for its household and cleaning products, medicines, food additives and toiletries. The tin increases in significance for its use as a recognised object found in many Australian kitchens since early days. It gives a snapshot into domestic life and social norms of the pre and post war period in Melbourne The tin is significant for its association with a local family in the 1930s for the preparation of family meals. Initially John Matchett had a grocery store in Pall Mall. In 1893, he advertised as a hay and corn dealer. When he retired to a farm in Kamarooka, the business was taken over by his son Robert Matchett (1864-1928). In 1904 the business moved to the Corner of Mitchell St., and Bath Lane. Stanley Lawrence Dawson had the grocery at 148 Union Road during the 1940s. The premises had previously been occupied by J T Poynton (butcher). It passed to A J Griffiths, also a grocer, c 1950 and then became a dry cleaners c1970. Stan was born in Werribee in c1890; died Balwyn in 1956. He married Gladys Elizabeth Goodfellow in 1922. In 1924 Harry Baughurst, a returned WW1 soldier, in partnership with Mr Hefford, purchased a grocery and ironmonger business in Orbost. It was situated on the corner of Nicholson and Tarra Streets, Orbost. When Mr Hefford left the district two years later , Harry Baughurst purchased and managed the business. In 1927 Baughurst formed a partnership with Robert Gall And Herbert & Co.to form the United Bread Supply Company so that they could purchase flours etc in bulk and therefore sell bread products more cheaply.This item is an exam ple of the book-keeping of an Orbost business in the early 20th century. The land occupied by the Hamilton Street shops was subdivided in the 1880s and the first purpose-built shop was 'Pope and Moran, Grocers'. This shop later became Tom Morris' Grocery. By 1930 shops stretched along both sides of Hamilton Street and part way along Churchill Street. The donor the late Norman Carter took many photos documenting Mont Albert and Surrey Hills from the 1920s. Kitty (Catherine) Sandow and Joyce Rowe grew up in Linton and attended Linton State School. Kitty Sandow (1916-1984) married Reg Jennings in 1946. Joyce Rowe (1912-1997) married Mick (Martin) Chung in 1931. Kitty and Reg took over the management of Kitty's parent's grocery and confectionery shop, which then became known as "Jennings' Milk Bar". The subject of this photograph was unidentified for many years, but in 2014 the photograph was identified as probably of Mary Broadstock Tame, the aunt of John Burnham Tame. (J. B. Tame was the son of Mary's brother Charles Tame). Mary Broadstock Tame was the wife of Joseph Shepherd, who ran Shepherd's Family Grocery & Ironmongery store in Sussex Street, Linton. Dust coat worn by Mr Frederick Alister Jennings when he managed a family grocery store circa 1948 at 510 Point Nepean Road, East Brighton. Frederick was born at Nagambie, Victoria in 1909 and died in Brighton in 1979. He was the son of Hugh Edwin Jennings and Alice Constance Warren. He married Margaret Jean Hughes in 1934 and served in the Second World War. He lived at 1 Valda Grove Brighton. Frederick was a commercial traveller as well as his time spent managing the store in Point Nepean Road. It is believed this coat dates from his time at the store c1948 - 1955. The store was owned for many years by his father-in-law W. G. Hughes and was one of a group of shops near the corner of Centre Road. In 1944-45 the group of shops included Fletcher’s fuel merchants, a haberdasher, butcher, fruiterer, grocer, Brighton East post office, a ladies’ hairdresser and Hughes’ grocer. In 1950 Hughes’ grocery store was between a service station and the Commercial Bank on what had been renamed Nepean Highway. The business was sold to G. S. General store and house built by C.R. Nicholl's in late 1925 at the same time J.N. Burgoyne built his store. Nicholl's sold the store and three allotments in York Street 1931. During the 1950s when the Moar family lived at No. 11 the grocery store was run by Cockcrofts. After Cockcrofts it was Davis and they turned it into a hardware store and timber yard at the side. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. Stiff & Gannon General Store, Hardware, Draper and Grocery Merchants was located in High Street, Wodonga. The business opened in August 1946 and closed on 28 February 1970. Robert Burrowes was born in Canada in 1826 and came to Australia and Bendigo in 1853. He initially opened a boot and shoe shop in Pall Mall and latera wine and spirit and grocery store in High Street. He was elected to the Bendigo Council in 1856. In 1855 he started the first fire brigade. In 1858 he married Sarah Ellen Vickery. He was elected to Parliament as the member for Bendigo and served 1866 -1877 and again 1880 - 1893. A bandage is a piece of material used either to support a medical device such as a dressing or splint, or on its own to provide support to the body; it can also be used to restrict a part of the body. G. J. Coles opened the 'Coles Variety Store' on 9 April 1914 on Smith Street in the Melbourne, Victoria suburb of Collingwood. Further expansion occurred and Coles' interest in food retailing was spurred in 1958 when it acquired 54 John Connell Dickins grocery stores. It then acquired the Beilby's chain in South Australia in 1959 and 265 Matthews Thompson grocery stores in New South Wales in 1960 .In 1960, the first supermarket was opened in the Melbourne suburb Balwyn North, at the corner of Burke and Doncaster Roads where a modernised version continues to operate. By 1973, Coles had established stores in all Australian capital cities. From 1962, its supermarkets were branded Coles New World with accompanying rocket imagery. In 1991, the stores were re-branded Coles Supermarkets and from 1998, simply as Coles. George James (G. J.) Coles learned the retail trade working for his father's 'Coles Store' business from 1910 to 1913. The store continued operating as "The Original Coles" at Wilmot, Tasmania until it was destroyed by a fire on 24 January 2014. Mr Maxwell Pemberton was born in Goulburn, NSW in 1923 and moved to Beechworth as a child just before the Great Depression. Mr Pemberton's father was a baker who opened a grocery store in Beechworth to support his seven children. The store, which competed with eight other grocery traders in Beechworth for finite local business, delivered goods by horse and cart to customers all over the district, including the hamlet of Stanley. Mr Pemberton's oral history testifies to the sorts of economic struggles faced by the majority of Beechworth's residents during the depression years. Mr Pemberton worked in many different industries in and around Beechworth, including in his father's grocery store, which he later took over with his brother; the Zwar Tannery, where he served as a union representative; and at the Ovens and Murray Hospital for the Aged, formally the Ovens Benovolent Asylum, established in 1862 for care of the district's destitute, disabled and aged people from Euroa to the Murray, among them, homeless people Mr Pemberton referred to as 'river-bankers'. The hospital's founding in the 1860s was driven by a committee headed by the notable figure, G.B Kerford. Beechworth's institutions were a major source of local employment in the twentieth century. Mr Pemberton joined the Australian Navy during WWII and served at Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. During his period of service, he received an honorary award from the Royal Humane Society of Australia for aiding and saving a drowning civilian at risk to his own life. Mr Pemberton's oral history also touches on the complex relationship between Australian forces and local Papuan people during the war. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Mr Maxwell Pemberton's oral history recalls many aspects of life in Beechworth and the Oven's district during the twentieth century and enriches our understanding of the effects of the periods of socio-economic decline and renewal that unfolded as the century progressed. His singular account of his various jobs and colourful memories of life as a youth and young man in Beechworth, and abroad as a serviceman, contributes to our understanding of society's attitudes and expectations regarding ideals of masculinity and Australian national identity. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which would have been lost if they had not been preserved.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. Emma was born in East Doncaster in 1903, the daughter of Carl Heinrich Uebergang and Sarah Buck. Emma’s grandparents were pioneers in Doncaster from 1855 and her father had an orchard in Andersons Creek Road. Mr & Mrs Atkinson had a green-grocery business and general store at 815 Whitehorse Road, almost on the corner of Elgar Road from 1930 until about 1950 . Lloyd's butchers business was next door. In retirement the couple lived at 63 Zetland Road, Mont Albert and William continued to work as an orchard hand. Emma died in 2000 and is buried in Templestowe Cemetery. Built in late 1912 for Mr Edmund Holt and his wife Ruby Ellen (nee Sutton). Edmund came from Coburg where his family had a grocery business. The Holt family lived there from 1913-1945. There were 3 children: Alan Judge (1912-1993); Frederick Sutton (1914-1992) and Raymond James (1918-2000). When Edmund Holt died, Mrs Holt remained there until 1952. Alan Judge Holt was Secretary of the Victorian Lands Department and a keen and meticulous local historian who contributed significantly to this collection. The house has been demolished and there are units on the site. Card cases were common items used mainly by men in the 19th century. A silver card case indicated that the owner was a man of means. ‘W.Swinton’ is presumed to be William Swinton who came to Australia in 1854 and established a drapery and grocery store in Timor Street in 1865. William Swinton died in 1901 and his son, also William was Mayor of Warrnambool from 1917 to 1919. A Swinton business still exists in Timor Street today. ‘W.Wilkie’ was obviously a friend or a business acquaintance of William Swinton and may have been related to James Wilkie who came to Warrnambool in 1854 and opened a drapery shop in 1855 in Timor Street with James Butters as a partner. This is a most significant item as one that belonged to William Swinton, a prominent Warrnambool business man and a pioneer settler in the town. It also has social significance as an example of an item used by businessmen and others in the 19th centuryThis is a silver card case with a hinged lid. The silver is patterned in geometric shapes and the edges are highly ornamented with scrolls. Inside the case are five pieces of white paper which are obviously not original. The case has five hallmarks indicating it is a quality object. The silver is somewhat tarnished. Scroll frame on front of case: ‘From W.Wilkie to W. This chair comes from Swintons Stores in Warrnambool and is said to have been used as a "Santa Chair" at Christmas time. Wiliam and Ann Swinton arrived in Australia in 1854. William, a builder opened a grocery, china and glassware store in Timor Street, Warrnambool in 1865. By 1888 the firm was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened at South Warrnambool, Raglan Parade, Wangoom, Cudgee and Nullawarre. In1934 the business split into two companies, Swintons Pty. Ltd. and George Swinton and Sons Pty. Ltd. The Swinton family still operate a business in Timor Street, Warrnambool, making it one of the oldest family businesses still operating in Australia.This chair is of considerable interest as it comes from the Swintons stores in Warrnambool and this is a business that has been operating in Timor Street since 1865.This is a wooden ( bent wood) chair with a round seat attached to the back by wooden screws. The seat insert, possibly basket wear is missing. There is a lower circular piece of wood under the seat and this is broken at one end. There are four bowed legs. The back of the chair has turned wood with three middle slats and two sides attached by wooden pegs and screws. The seat has two bent wood handles, currently detached . Five Truscott brothers came to Bendigo from Cornwall and after seven years mining Anthony Truscott opened a grocery store in 30 Havilah Street, Long Gully. Anthony Truscott (Bap 24/2/1856, Cornwall - 21/9/1913). At the age of 18 Anthony went to America but soon returned to England. At about the age of 24 he came to Victoria c. 1880.. He worked in several mines for the next 7 years before opening his grocery shop. In 1907 he was the president of the Bendigo ANA. In 1915 he was the secretary of the Long Gully fire brigade. He died of dropsy and Brights disease. Edward Truscott ( 2/6/1844 - 9/10/1916) Edward and his wife Ellen lived in Smalley Street, California Gully and at 30 Dowding Street, Eaglehawk. He is buried at Eaglehawk. William Truscott (c. 1853 - 14/10/1911) William was a JP. He was also the first President of the California Gully Progress Association in 1910 John Truscott (1/2/1837 - 6/8/1919) John went to America as a young man where he married Christina Grigg and had several children. He arrived in Australia in 1862 with his family. His wife died shortly after the birth of her baby, and John quickly remarried to Catherine Alice Willis and had more children. He was the mining manager at the Hercules and Energetic Mine at Long Gully from 1877. he still held this position in 1882.Newspaper cutting titled Prominent family to reunite written by Susan Turpie. No date. Five Cornish brothers Anthony, Thomas, William, John and Edward Truscott made their way to Australia after mining work in Cornwall began to dry up. They settled in Long Gully and California Gully and later spread out to Strathfieldsaye and further through the region. Jean McDonald organised a family reunion which had activities at the Long Gully Uniting Church, the Long Gully Uniting Church Hall and Lake Weeroona.
