Miss Jane Elizabeth (Jean) Pearson is second from the left. From c1927 - c1950 Miss Pearson had the cake and confectionery shop at 147 Union Road. It was later a milk bar, next to Henry Jamieson’s radio and electrical shop. Miss Pearson sold Farey’s cakes which were very popular and in a trellised-off section also served morning and afternoon teas. Her sisters often helped. Silversticks, white knights, licorice straps were among a wide selection of sweets to be bought for 1d. – or even ½d. Jean was one of a large family born to John William Pearson and Agnes Yeaman. Jean was born at Riddell's Creek in c1884. She died in 1966. She had 3 brothers and a total of 6 sisters. Lillias Irene and Grace Stewart died in infancy or childhood, so the other sisters in the photo were (not necessarily in order): Ethel Agnes born in 1885, who married James Charles Robertson; Catherine Myra born in 1887, unmarried; May Dempster born 1891, unmarried; and Stella Christie born 1897, who married Cecil Hunt Aston in 1928. Jean was in business as a confectioner at 3 High Street, Malvern in 1927; in Union Road 1941-1949 and resided (presumably in retirement) at 37 Mayston Street, Hawthorn in 1954. At the later address May and Catherine are also listed variously in 1954 and 1963. (Ref: electoral rolls). The Hawthorn address was the 'family home' - address of John William Pearson who died in 1944, appointing Jean as his executrix. A narrative of Miss Enez Domec-Carre's work with Melbourne Legacy. Appears to be text of a speech made on her retirement which was on 31 December 1970. Enez was the supervisor of the girls classes held at Legacy House for 36 years. She organised many annual demonstrations and was held in high regard by Legacy. The library at Legacy House is named in her honour. See also a newspaper article at 00978 which outlines her achievements, a summary of her career at 00458 and 00129. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy as assistant to Mrs Gilles (wife of a Legatee) later became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. This photograph has been variously identified as "Miss Jennings", "Emily Jennings", and "Ilma Jennings", and also as "Reg Jennings' sister" and "Reg Jennings' aunt". It is most likely of Martha Emily Jennings, born 1876 (known as Emily), the oldest daughter of Jonathan and Martha Jennings (née Bersey). Martha Emily Jennings had a brother Reginald (born1899) and also had a nephew Reginald (the son of her brother William Jonathan Jennings). It is unlikely to be a photograph of Ilma Jennings (a daughter of William Jonathan Jennings and niece of Martha Emily Jennings) who was not born until 1909. Cuttings from the Ballarat Courier, date from around 23 August 1971 following the closure of the Victoria St lines and part of the Gardens route. Includes a poem titled "Vale, the Tramways!", written by SMP, an item by a staff report going to to school by tram in Victoria St and Sturt St ""Will miss the tram".
