The Kew Historical Society’s collection includes a wide range of leisure objects. Many of the items are European-made, generally of British origin, however there are a number that were made for the Australian market by Australian manufacturers. In the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, there were large numbers of games produced for children and adults. These included: arcade games, board games, playing cards and puzzles. A representative sample, many now rare survivors, can be found in the collection. John SandsPty Ltd is an Australian company that produced board games from 1929-78. Contack was first produced in the U.S.A. but the original versions date to 1886. The board game is played by 2-6 players who match colours and tiles to gain the highest score. This item is linked to the 'HMAS Encounter', possibly made on the ship c. 1913. In 1916 this ship visited a then unnamed island off the Western Australian coast, where the crew discovered two bronze cannons protruding from the sand. These cannons now in the WA Maritime Museum, Fremantle, have been linked to the "Mahogany Ship" legend by historian K.G. MacIntyre. Cribbage is a very popular card game, particularly with naval personnel. This cribbage score board belonged to Alexander Charles Forsyth who used it aboard H.M.A.S. Encounter in 1913. He was a stoker, service number 3086, from New South Wales. H.M.A.S Encounter, the fourth warship of that name, was built at Devonport Dockyard, Tasmania, for the Royal Australian Navy in 1905. She was a second class protected cruiser and in 1909 was lent for three years to the British Admiralty. In 1913 (the year marked on this cribbage board) she was in New South Wales and Queensland waters and in World War One she served in the Pacific region, taking part in the capture of German New Guinea. She was finally scuttled in 1932.Social significance: an example of leisure activities in early C20th. Historical significance: link to "Mahogany Ship" legend through H.M.A.S. Encounter. This is an interesting item with social significance as cribbage was a popular game, particularly in the 20th century, and it illustrates the pastimes of a generation past. It was given to Warrnambool and District Historical Society by a Wangoom couple and so may have local significance if A.C. Forsyth was related to this couple. H.M.A.S. This quartz and bluestone monument pays tribute to James Galloway the founder of the the eight-hour day system that gave workers the right to stop work after 8 hours without any penalty. The system was widely celebrated as a world first and Australia became known as a workingman’s paradise. Eight hour day is translated as: Eight hours of work, eight hours of leisure and eight hours of rest. In 1880, the 8hr day Anniversary Committee decided to mark the establishment of the 8hrs day by erecting a monument to the memory of the pioneer of the 8hr movement in the colony, James Galloway. The campaign for the Galloway monument was so successful that one year later on 21 April 1881, and after the longest 8hrs day procession to that date, the Mayor of the City, Councillor A T Morrison, imbarred the monument at the foot of Sturt Street, Ballarat. The monument is of historic significance to the people of BallaratGranite spire with four cast iron drinking fountains and marble tablets. Part of a collection of goldfield artifacts recovered from the Ovens Goldfield, including the Buckland Valley. The collection also included a large amount of Chinese pottery and artifacts also goldfields bottles, jars and mining implements. Collected by Aldo Gios late resident of Myrtleford. The Bright & District Historical Society purchased the collection of Chinese artifacts in 2010, included in the collection were other items of interest including this pipe and others similar.Relevant to the goldmining history of the areaPipe made of clay and embossed on both sides of the bowl. A typical leisure activity for children of this era was a doll's tea party. The Methodist Children's Home in Cheltenham was founded c1880 to provide housing for neglected children from the inner city. The Founders aimed to provide regular nourishment, a stable environment and integrate the children into the local community thereby improving their education and lives. However new settlers to Cheltenham area who were seeking a healthier and more respectable lifestyle for their families were not happy to share Church and School with the Home's Children. (see 00561) 1950's saw a new direction for the support of children and families in poor and difficult situations . The new Burwood Homes Facility opened in 1951 and children were transferred from Cheltenham in 1952. The land was sold to the St John of God, Catholic Order in1953 who maintained an orphanage until Myer Pty Ltd bought the site in 1967 and constructed the Southland Shopping Centre c1892-1953 The Methodist Children's Home Cheltenham was founded to provide safe accommodation and education for neglected children from the inner city slums. This piece of functional Trench Art was made by Stewart Noble during World War 2 (circa 1940) while serving on a Mine Sweeper among the Pacific Islands. It is believed that the bullet spoon was chrome plated after the war, while he worked at the Government Aircraft Factory. Trench art is described as any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war, or civilians where the manufacture is directly linked to a war. The making of trench art was a popular past time during leisure hours at the front, where skilled military personnel created the items. Common examples of trench art are decorated shell and bullet casings, and items carved from wood and bone. Trench art has been in existence since the Napoleonic wars however it was most common during World War 1, and to a lesser extent during World War 2. This bullet spoon has historic significance because it is an example of the type of functional or artistic small items, that were made from war scrap during spare time by soldiers or other personnel associated with a war. The Ozone Coffee Palace was built in 1890-1891. It was designed by Mr J McLeod. It was grand in design and decoration. The term Coffee Palace was used to describe temperance hotels which were built during the 1880’s -1890’s. They typically were multi-purpose and had a large number of rooms for ballrooms and leisure activities. Coffee palaces were aimed at families in coastal areas and inner city locations. Examples of some are The Windsor Hotel Melbourne, Ozone, Queenscliff and Kilbreda Convent in Mentone. The bottom part of the advertisement is a testimonial written by Brassey and Sybil De V Brassey, Lord Brassey being Governor of Victoria around 1895. Their visit to Warrnambool and their stay at the Ozone sparked a much needed interest in the Ozone. In 1896 the price to stay at the Ozone was two pounds two shillings and it remain in business for several years but in 1910 it closed after losing money for many years. It remained closed until it was bought by Mr Howard Lawson in 1920. It continued to struggle financially. It was burnt down in February 1929. When the Ozone was built in1891 it was the largest building in Warrnambool. It occupied a prominent position on the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets. The grand architectural style in which it was built, was used for a number of similar buildings throughout the state. Mirrabooka means Southern Cross. The Melbourne Movie Club was established for those interested in Moving Pictures and all its branches. 'A place to go to spend a few leisure hours, a select dance, parties, picnics, amusements, to learn the art of picture acting and make up, to take part in the Company's productions, dramatic art, to have a jolly good time, etc.' The Melbourne Movie Club has a spacious premises at 184 Exhibition Street, Melbourne, with a floor space of 10,000 square feet, where scenes and sets were erected for the use of Club Members. The Club had full moving picture producing equipment such as big light plant, stage effects, scenery, and cameras. A telescope is an optical instrument used to make distant objects appear nearer and larger, this item is small enough and designed to be portable enough to fit into a gentleman's pocket while out walking. This type, size and manufacture of the telescope was designed for general everyday use for bird watching and general observation of subjects while out walking. This item was not for marine use as its focal length is too short and could only observe subjects that were not too far away. The New South Wales Railway Institute affectionately known as “the Institute”, was initially established to provide a higher standard of educational learning for NSW railway employees. As well as employment related training, the Institute was tasked with stimulating growth and intellectual development of employees in the arts, social, leisure, and physical recreations. The NSW Railway Institute was formally opened on the 14th of March 1891 and at the time was the only institution of its kind in the Commonwealth. The Albury branch of the Railways Institute was formed on March 1, 1921. This included the building of a Railway Institute building as part of the Railway precinct in 1921. On Tuesday 7 October 1952, the Daily Advertiser, Wagga reported that a move had started at Albury for the establishment of a third bowling club. The new club formed would be the Railway Institute Bowling Club and the suggested site was on Albury City Council land at the corner of Young and Smollett streets. The Albury Railway Institute opened its bowling greens in February 1956. It later became known as Windsor Park Bowling Club. In 2003, the Bowling Club was liquidated and was amalgamated with the Albury Soldiers Sailors & Airmen’s Club. After changes to their operating model, the club building was demolished in 2013.
