Black and white copy of original photograph which shows the shop in Sussex Street owned by J. H. Morgan, the shop and dwelling owned by Richard Ching (telegraph pole in front), and the shop and dwelling owned by Annie Brown (née Nicholls). A small building between Ching's and Brown's shops may be the workshop of Dan McMillan, bootmaker. What appears to be a laneway between the Morgan shop and the Ching dwelling was once occupied by the Surface Hill Hotel (demolished c.1911). The original bank and residence were built in 1862, and the building was extended in 1873-74. The three windows on the left of the photograph are in the original building, and the windows and door on the right of the photograph are in the extension. The brick building was cement-rendered at an unknown later date. In 1904 the Bank of New South Wales built a new banking chamber & residence on the west side of Sussex Street next to the Post Office, after which the earlier building became a private residence. It was lived in for many years by members of the Lewers family (Samuel Lewers had been first manager of the Bank of NSW in Linton) and was purchased in the early 1960s by Stella Surman (née Todd). More recently it has been used as an antique shop and tea rooms, and it is currently a private residence. This photograph was taken in 2014 by Gary Hunt.One of three colour photographs printed on a single sheet of photographic paper. The Morgan family ran a store in Sussex Street from 1894, known as the Linton Economic Store. It was run between c.1906 and 1930 by J.H. (John Hutchison) Morgan, between 1930 and 1956 by R.H. (Robert Harold) Morgan, and between 1956 and 1964 by S.E. (Selwyn Eric) Morgan. Alwyn Roberts worked at the store from about 1946. See information in Charles & Alwyn Roberts family file. Carrie Murrell ran the newsagancy in Linton for more than fifty years.Black and white photograph of two men (Bert Rutherford on left, Alwyn Roberts on right), wearing grocer's aprons, standing next to a truck which is parked outside H. Statutory Declaration, George Perkins, Linton, 1868
Honora Perkins, the daughter of George and Julia Perkins, was accidentally killed when a cart in which she was travelling home from school was overturned near Linton.Statutory declaration, handwritten on pale-blue lined paper, written (presumably by Samuel Lewers) for George Perkins, who could not read or write. Asserts that George Perkins has insufficient money to pay for the burial of his child Honora Perkins, who was accidentally killed on November 30th, 1868. Dating the photograph: This copy of the photograph (Registration no. 2015-12) was donated in 2014 by Peter Stapleton, who understood it was taken in 1919. The Shire of Grenville offices in Linton were built n in 1939, and replaced the original Shire Hall which was built in the 1860s. At the time the offices were built, Linton was the headquarters of the Shire of Grenville. The Shire of Grenville ceased to exist in 1993 following municipal amalgamations, and the offices are now the Linton offices of the Golden Plains Shire which has its headquarters at Bannockburn.Colour photograph showing a single-storey cream brick building, with a flagpole and various memorials outside it. Photograph, Mary Linton née Dunlop (Mrs Joseph Linton)
Photograph is part of Old Lintonian collection ; No. 4. Mary Linton, nee Dunlop, was born in 1809 the West Indies, and married Joseph Linton in Scotland when she was eighteen. Mary and Joseph Linton migrated to Victoria in 1839, and took up a pastoral lease in the Wardy Yaloak district which they called Emu Hill. They had eleven children, ten of whom survived to adulthood. Mary died in Ballarat in 1887. This image was copied in 2020 from a facebook post by Marcia Penny, a descendant of Linton's Craine family. Information with the image on facebook said the original photograph had been in a McIntyre family album (the McIntyre family was connected to the Craine family by marriage).Digital copy of an original photograph and its mounting card, which shows a coach drawn by two horses. Photograph is dated by the inscription, which identifies the head teacher as "Mr Dugard". Mr A. Duguard was head teacher for only one term in 1914. Note: Teacher Annie Sandow is also named in the inscription on the back of the photo as "Mrs Cull", as she married George Cull in 1915. In 1900 this shop was a stationer's and newsagency owned by George Smith. It was then owned by Annie Nicholls (afterwards Annie Brown), and later by Ruby and John Sandow. Their daughter Kitty married Reg Jennings and the shop became known as "Jennings' Milk Bar". The shop evolved into a grocery/general store/confectioners.
