This album contains photographs from the Warrnambool Dramatic Society’s 1955 production of ‘See How They Run’. Amateur theatre groups have been operating in Warrnambool since the 1850s under a variety of names. The Warrnambool Dramatic Society was operating in the late 1940s and has continued to operate over the ensuing years with the name of the group today being the Warrnambool Theatre Company. This album gives us historical and pictorial information on the performers in ‘See How They Run’. No further information has been found on the owner of the album, Perc Moore.This album contains photographs that are important as a record of a Warrnambool Dramatic Society production in 1955. This is an album of 12 pages. It is bound with two metal studs. It has a buff-coloured cover in a mottled pattern with silver printing on the front cover. It contains ten black and white photographs, two of them loose. It also has inserted in the first two pages two programmes. The album is in a cream-coloured cardboard box. Herbert Allan Leighton was an actor and elocution teacher known widely in the eastern states of Australia where he performed with his wife Tracy Hamilton. But all was not as it seemed. In 1903 he was arrested in Perth after suspicions were raised when he bought expensive clothing and jewellery for his wife. Subsequently six thousand pounds in banknotes was found under his bed. Another fellow from his theatre group was also arrested and charged with Bank robbery. Leighton was charged with receiving money that he knew to be stolen. Investigations by Perth police showed that Leighton was really, Victorian born, Norman Campbell. He had worked as a clerk for Victorian Savings Bank in Melbourne and then in the same role at Sydney Savings Bank in NSW. During this time he had amassed large sums of money by forgery and embezzlement, a crime that he spent 7 years in prison for. He then emerged as the newly minted H. A. Leighton actor and elocution teacher in Bendigo.Large format scrapbook collated by H.A. Leighton. This is a program for a local theatrical performance. It was produced and directed by Frances Sinclair and contains a number of dance and musical items. There are a number of local Warrnambool names among the performers such as K T Swinton, Rex Fotheringham, Mavis MacDonald, Miss Rooney, W Goodall, John Reid, George and June Philpot. The dancers ranged from tiny tots, Petite ballerinas, Corp de ballet to the belles De Paris. Some of the other items on the program are the Scottish Samba, Tut and Khamen and Fiesta in Granada by Ferdinande Del Campo Caravani111 and Monty Bellow the Atomic Bull & Co which would suggest that it around the time of the Atomic testing in the Montebello Islands in the 1950’s. A program which shows the artistic side to the city and associated humour and talent. It has a large number of names of those involved in the production and performance and would be typical of concerts performed around the country at that time. As one of Geelong's finest forwards, Lloyd Hagger was relatively tall and possessed the ability to take high-flying, spectacular finger-tip marks at chest height as he tumbled over packs. His accurate punt and drop kicks resulted in many goals for the team. He became well known for scoring many acute angle goals. A mobile performer who could kick effectively with either foot, he played with equal effectiveness at centre half-forward and full forward. His durability was remarkable. The "Q" Theatre Guild was formed out of the Kew Light Opera Company in 1957. It marked the transition of the company that had initially been directed by Lance Nicholls to one directed by Beatrice Oakley. It continued to perform in the Kew Recreation Hall, but, with its demolition in 1960, and the opening of the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road, moved its productions to that venue. Marion Tilley, the creator of the scrapbook in which the photo is pasted is given credit for designing and making the costumes. Set design was by R. Jewell. An annotation underneath the photo identifies two of the leads: Carla Jeffries and Alan Wilson. The photograph was taken on the night of 21 or 27 June when Jeffries performed the title role, a role she shared with Val Breen. A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. The performers were the RAAF Central Band. Held in December each year. The photos from 1995 show President Millie presenting flowers to Inez Bruce, Gwen Gunn and Irene Noll. Usually the concert was the time the Widows Clubs presented Legacy with funds raised through their fundraising each year - in this case $21,000 - and the president acknowledges with flowers. The article mentions that over 1,800 widows came together for the concert despite the rain and bad weather. The RAAF Central Band was conducted by Sq. Ldr. This is a program for two plays staged by The Arcadians in 1934. This drama group was originally known as the Warrnambool High School Ex-Students’ Dramatic Society and was founded in 1925 by Colonel Langley, the Head Master of Warrnambool High School and his wife, Edmee. The Arcadians drama group was still operating in 1947 and proceeds from the productions went to the Warrnambool High School, funding many school projects including a tennis court, a Senior English prize and Watson Hall. By 1934 a special project was the funding of the ‘Langley Library’. Notable among The Arcadians performers were Colonel George Langley (in the early years of the group), Horace Jones, an English teacher at the school, Syb Carpenter, Bill Earle, Mary and Ron Mack and Nancy Humm. This programme is of particular interest as an example of the plays staged by the well-known Warrnambool drama group, The Arcadians.This is a programme made of two sheets of green paper folded in two to make eight pages. The printing is in black. The sheets were originally stapled but the metal staples have been removed. The inscription is handwritten in blue ink. ‘N. J. A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. Often the performers were the RAAF Central Band. Held in December each year. The photos from 1994 show President Woodward presenting flowers to Gwen Gunn, Vera Lang and Irene Noll. Usually the concert was the time the Widows Clubs presented Legacy with funds raised through their fundraising each year - in this case $16,200 - and the president acknowledges with flowers. The article mentions that over 1,200 widows came together for the concert, and the RAAF Central Band was conducted by Sq. Ldr. The Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7 was held for three months in the Town Hall/Council Chambers/ Mechanics Institute buildings with additional temporary buildings placed on the Liebig and Timor Streets corner area. It was one of the biggest events ever held in Warrnambool with an estimated 70,000 attending. John Villiers, the owner of a glassware and crockery shop in Liebig Street and a well-known theatrical performer, had a large display stand at the Exhibition. He displayed glassware items from Britain and Europe and sold souvenirs of the Exhibition. Villiers engaged Mr Bartholomew, a Melbourne engraving artist, and he gave engraving exhibitions at Villiers’ stall. Glass etching had not been seen in Warrnambool previous to this. No doubt many of his engraved objects were sold and this glass tumbler would be one of these. This is a valuable and significant item because:- 1. It is an important souvenir from the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7, the only one we have from Villiers’ stall. 2. It is an example of what is believed to be the first etching on glass to be done in Warrnambool. The identity of ‘M.R.’ is not known. This is an etched glass tumbler from the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. It is plain glass with a solid base. Two photos from the 1970 Annual Demonstration. One is the Governor of Victoria - Sir Rohan Delacombe shaking hands with Ivan Layton (executive officer of Melbourne Legacy) with President Simonson watching. The other is of two Junior Legacy performers in costumes presenting flowers to Lady Delacombe. One of the girls is Carmen Ellul, the other's name is not known. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium.
