National Wool MuseumBook - Wool Classing Note Books, John Griffin, 1941-1943
John Griffin’s wool classing exercise books from 1941-1943 when he was a student at the Gordon Institute in Geelong. John and his father John Henry Griffin owned a farm in Dunkeld and bred fine merino wool. One year they topped the wool sales figures for the area, in the late 1940s. There are four books in total. One book is on the topic of Veterinary Science and is from 1941. It contains information on topics such as birth and early lamb life, bone structure and other internal organisms of a sheep, such as the heart. Another book is on Wool Classing with topics such as wool scouring, dipping, shearing and micron counts. The third book is on general shearing shed knowledge. This includes a diagram for rolling a fleece, correct method for stamping a wool bale and branding abbreviations. The final book is on the History the Merino Sheep. It is a long form essay answer booklet. The Gordon institute and wool are synonymous with one another, the first class in wool sorting was offered at the Gordon in 1891. With much of the wool clip sent directly to England at this time, The Gordon's focus soon shifted to wool classing and marketing. By the 1930s, The Gordon's wool school was renowned as the state's wool industry training centre. Early specialist short courses were offered around Victoria to assist wool growers in preparing their clip for market, with modules on sheep breeding and pasture development included in the programs. Anne Griffin’s, John’s daughter, donated the exercise books to the National Wool Museum in 2021. Book 1 is predominately blue circular cover with cream background. Middle of book has pink highlighter mark. Reverse of book has an Arithmetical Table and a Multiplication Table in a blue ink on cream paper. It also has four black ink markings Book 2 is predominately blue circular cover with cream background. Book has red tape across the spine. Reverse of book has an Arithmetical Table and a Multiplication Table in a blue ink on cream paper. Book 3 is predominately blue plaid cover with cream background. Middle of book has pink highlighter handwriting which has been crossed with the same colour, leaving the text unreadable. Reverse of book has an Arithmetical Table and a Multiplication Table in a blue ink on cream paper. Book 4 is predominately blue diagonal striped book with cream background. WINLATON 1956 - 1993 • Established in 1951 with the name “Winlaton” the property was a children’s home run by the Mission of St James & St John. • By 1953 it was acquired and ran as a state facility under the same name (Winlaton), for female offenders and for girls under protection orders - otherwise known as ‘wards of the state’. • By the time of its closure in 1993, it was operating under the name “Nunawading Youth Residential Centre”, housing both males and females. WINLATON YOUTH TRAINING CENTRE By 1956, the state had constructed a purpose-built facility at Winlaton which would cater for both girls, and young women, who were under either a protection order/ward or who were female juvenile offenders. Some of the juvenile offenders were transferred to Winlaton from other facilities such as Turana, originally called the Royal Park Depot, due to overcrowding, or from convents. With the new facilities Winlaton, supposedly, could offer a separate training, education and treatment regime for those girls or young women who had been admitted under protection orders separately to those who had been committed under a custodial order. With this focus on training and rehabilitation the facility had 3 residential sections, or cottages. A Winlaton “trainee”, showing signs of good behaviour and progress, could be promoted up through any of the 3 cottages and likewise demoted down with bad behaviour. However, by 1957 one of the 3 cottages at Winlaton housed sentenced offenders and wards of state together. A 4th hostel – named ‘Leawarra’ - was added in 1959 which functioned as a reward, or privilege, for residents deemed worthy. Of note, this hostel kept offenders segregated from wards of the state. Juvenile offenders were termed as “trainees” through the Social Welfare Act 1960. By 1985 Winlaton was restricted to only providing programs for young offenders. Two legatees with James Tierney and his Corps of Commissionaires service medal. The notes on the back infer that Legatees were involved in the commemoration of James Tierney's life by arranging his burial at sea. An article in The Age 6 Jan 1953 mentions that Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927. He also became one of the two Commissionaires at the Shrine of Remembrance for 12 years up to 1953. The service medal he is receiving in the photo comes from the Corps of Commissionaires Association (Australia), which has information at http://www.thecorps.com.au. A summary: "The Corps of Commissionaires was founded in London 1859 by Sir Edward Walter KCB. The original aim was to provide to employment and welfare support for veterans of the Crimean War. The Corps of Commissionaires was established in Australia in New South Wales in 1939 and became based in Victoria in 1946. There are Corps members in all states in Australia from all three Australian military services. Our members range from World War 2 veterans through all conflicts to Timor and Peacekeepers. The Corps is currently an ex-service, welfare and philanthropic organisation that is located at the Veterans Centre in the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, Victoria." The details of the three legatees mentioned are: Legatee Samuel J. Benson (Lieut.Commander) – born 12.7.1909, inducted 17 October, 1950, died 26.7.95. Served in WWII with the RAN for 6 years. He was a Junior Legatee before the war, and Legacy found him a job in the office of an Adelaide Shipping Company. After the war he became a Master Mariner, Sea Pilot. He was proposed as a Legatee by Stan Savige. Legatee Donald J. Simonson (Captain) – born 21.5.1920, inducted 27 July 1953, died 11.7.2010. Served in WWII in 39th Battn., Decorated with M.C. Worked as an Importer and Manufacturers Agent after the war. President of Melbourne Legacy 1970. Legatee Adrian Beattie (Captain) – born 21.3.1920, inducted 10.10.1950, died 8.8.1989. Served as a Signal Officer in 24th Btn. 1302.1 - A4 size, 88 page report on Melbourne's tram and bus system produced by 'Tram & Bus Strategic Review Committee' in May 1992. Report printed on white paper, with blue covers, stapled on sides. Report examines cross linking of trams routes and many other recommendations regarding services, union awards, ticketing, opportunities for expansion, reliability, revenue impacts, driver only trams, workplace reform, staffing, revenue protection and tourism opportunities. Book titled "Tramway Permanent Way" presenting a series of lectures by MMTB Per Way officers in 1928 at Hawthorn Depot. Contents in order: 1. Handwritten note from Chris Jacobson on Metropolitan Transit Authority of Victoria memo paper forwarding a copy to Warren Doubleday of the BTPS in Feb. 1988, with date received stamp at depot of 19/2/1988. 2. Photocopy of a memo on Metropolitan Transit letterhead from K. C. Has a strong association with tram crews, possibly inspector (Dave Kellett?) in Ballarat. Prepared by Dave Kallett to undertake follow ups and to assist in the training of crews by checking their knowledge.Black gloss paper covered notebook or address book, titled "Where is it?, use by Dave Kellett? as a note book to record questions for tram drivers, when acting as an inspector. Note book has tabs marked for "A to W". Notebook consists of four sections, sewn into the spine, with glued full page covers. Gold block on top and bottom edges. Last few pages torn out. Each page ruled with blue and red lines at the top. Has a decimal currency conversion table in the front inside cover and a 1967 calendar on the rear inside cover. On bottom of rear cover, stamped, "Made in Japan". Handwritten questions cover various driving and electrical aspects of the trams, both 4 wheelers and bogie trams. Significant in being a detailed set of instructions for the Forest City signalling system that was operated by the tram's trolley pole. Details of the locations and crossing loops where used, primarily around the loop and through Bridge St. and how it operated. Prepared and printed by the SEC during 1965.Five page, foolscap duplicated document, stapled in two locations along the top edge, titled Forest City Signals, and dated 20-1-1965, giving details about the Forest City signalling system installed in Ballarat. Explains how the system operates, gives instructions, details of the system, location of the loops, trams following each other, power failure. Also gives details of how the Bridge St system operated and the switch at Grenville St. Gives instructions for running out of the depot. Notes history of dispute, MMTB, SEC, Adelaide, Hobart, Launceston, Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. Details basis for decisions of Contract of Employment, additional rates for trackman, time allowance at commencement and finish of duty, meals, training of traffic employees, special night allowances, margins. On bottom of page 5, the formal award commences: gives details of award duration, rates of pay, contract of employment, margins compared to the basic award, additional rates, hours of labour, shift work, overtime. holiday work, call forward and call back to duty, spread of hours, Saturday and Sunday work, special night allowances, time allowance at commencement and finish of duty, attending for duty, reporting for duty, meals, acting out of grade, surpluses and shortages, annual leave, sick leave, free travel uniforms, training of traffic employees, reports, union notices and punishments. Was stapled for all 13 pages with three staples on left hand side. Pages 10 to 13 have become unstapled.
