Clothing - Protective Wear, Pinafore, 1950s
One of a collection of fourteen items of protective wear and household textiles donated by Lisa Sylvan, a long-term resident of Kew, Five of the items are homemade aprons made and worn by her mother. Of the seven pinafores, three identical but differently sized pinafores were made in her parents' factory, while the other three are handmade. The handmade aprons and pinafores are representative samples of women's work, possibly from published patterns, using fabrics originally deigned for dresses. Typically, contrasting fabrics and colours were selected to provide visual interest. The donation also includes a hand embroidered linen supper cloth and a commercially produced 'birds of Australia' printed table cloth. Most of the collection derives from the 1950s.Although not uncommon, hand-made protective clothing in the form of aprons and pinafores often represents samples and styles of 'women's work' using remnant fabrics often designed for other purposes. While generally utilitarian, women found means of gracing these items by the use brightly coloured fabric or patterns, the positioning of pockets and the use of contrasting fabrics to provide visual interest.Navy blue and white pinafore picked out with sections of plain blue fabric on the pocket, waist and bodice.protective clothing, handmade clothing, costume accessories, lisa sylvan, pinafores, fashion design, women's clothing -- 1960s, fashion -- 1960s -

The donor, Bob Lennox believed that these were the work of his great-grandfather William Lennox and his builders. William and his son were plasterers and often used the shell motif which is seen on the pediment of the buildings. These two terraces were part of the retail development of five terraces along Canterbury Road which were constructed on land subdivided from the parcel of land originally owned by John Woodhead. The Alan Holt register of properties in 3127 gives a list of proprietors / residents at the beginning of each decade from 1890-1980. There are also earlier photos depicting these buildings in the collection. These buildings have been included in the City of Boroondara Heritage Overlay Union Road Commercial Precinct 2011, Surrey Hills. These buildings were amongst the first commercial buildings serving the area of Surrey Hills and followed the extension of the railway from Camberwell in 1883.A colour photo with rounded corners taken from slightly diagonally across Canterbury Road from 2 double-storey Victorian style buildings. Programme - Order of Service, Commonwealth of Australia, State Funeral [for] The Late The Honourable Sir Wilfrid Kent Hughes K.B.E. M.V.O. M.C. E.D. M.P., 1970
A resident, and parliamentary representative of Kew, Wilfred Kent Hughes was elected to the Victorian Parliament in 1927. He switched to federal politics in 1949 and remained an MP until his death in 1970. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.Handout - "State Funeral. The Late The Honourable Sir Wilfrid Kent Hughes K.B.E. M.V.O. Original Document, Residential Qualification: Aden Armstrong, Circa 1900
This is an original Elector’s right certificate of 1900 for the Warrnambool Electoral District. This entitled the owner to vote at elections held for the Legislative Assembly in the Government of Victoria. The voter had to be male and resident in the electorate( in this case Warrnambool). This certificate was issued to Aden Armstrong an undertaker with a business in Timor Street opposite the Old National Bank which was at the corner of Kepler and Timor Streets. The Registrar who signed the certificate was Richard Geilhofer. The certificate was one of the items in the Henri Worland collection of historical society in 1973 by the Warrnambool City Council via Keith Arnel the Town Clerk. The timeframe of this document is on the cusp of major electoral change in Australia with the Federation of Australian states happening in 1901 and the granting of the vote for Australian women in the various states over the next decade. This item would have been a common item at the time as all those entitled to vote had to present same. It has local significance with Aden Armstrong being in business in Warrnambool for a number of years.Cream coloured paper with black text. Victorian coat of Arms at centre top of document. Drawing of lady holding shield on left side Handwritten information is written in faded black ink. Blue stamped number 137050 on top right corner. Back is printed with notes for the elector.Signature and date 1/11/00 at top left. Warrnambool is stamped in dark blue twice at top. Aden Armstrong of Lava St Warrnambool, Undertaker is written on the form with his signature at bottom right. Also signed by the registrar of the day, Richard Geilhofer. Date is also included 24th January 1900 elector's right certificate, aden armstrong, warrnambool, warrnambool undertakers -

[from EDHS Newsletter No. 39, November 1984:] MALDON TRIP A bus load of members and friends travelled to Maldon on 28th October. This proved to be a long but enjoyable day. Peter Bassett-Smith provided an interesting commentary on points of interest along the way. At Maldon local resident, Mrs Frances Gray, guided the bus around the many interesting features and entertained members with her lively and knowledgeable comments. Because our usual driver, Bruce Ness, was recovering from an illness, Mees Bus Lines provided a replacement driver at the cost of the company. Mees have provided us with excellent service over a number of years, but this action goes well beyond what could be reasonably expected, and is very much appreciated. Work on paper - Photocopy of newspaper cutting, "PHILLIP ISLAND/A place to fall in love"
This article was written by an English visitor named Elsa Christian who was touring Australia and New Zealand with her husband Frank in their own small van. The article was published in the Australian Women’s Weekly, magazine, March 1966. Elsa writes she wanted to visit four Australian locations before she died: Ayers Rock (actually Uluru), the Snowy River project, dolphins at Coolangatta and the Penguin Parade at Phillip Island. These destinations were all very popular in the 1960s for both Australian residents and overseas visitors. Because the roads were becoming better too many locations, self guided tours in small vans for cars towing bond would caravans were becoming more popular means of seeing AustraliaThe article is significant in many ways. 1. Indicates the places English visitors commonly wish to see in Australia. 2. Describes the growing trend to self- drive van/camping holidays. 3. 35mm Slide, Alfred Hall, corner Curtis and Grenville Streets, Ballarat circa 1950s
Demolition appears to be under way in this image of the Alfred Hall. It was built in 1862 for the visit of Queen Victoria's son Prince Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh, across the Yarrowee (which formed the municipal boundary) apparently because the municipalities of Ballarat and Ballarat East could not decide who should have the honour! The Alfred Hall held many of the city's events over 89 years, but was symbolically locked up the day the Civic Hall in Mair Street was officially opened, in August 1956. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. When Mrs Strange died some years ago, her extensive slide collection was sorted through and those relevant to Ballarat were gifted to the Ballarat Library. alfred hall, curtis street, holden cars, ballarat -

35mm Slide, R.A.A.F Missile on parade, Ballarat Circa 1956
Part of a parade on Creswick road, showing the R.A.A.F Wireless Air Gunner School no.1's (WAGS) float. The display shows a missile and a few of the Cadets aboard. The location of this photograph was easily identifiable by the large chimney in the background along with Coltmans (presently Aldi) The missile though fake looking is in fact a real missile known as the Red Dean, and was supposed to be the largest air to air missile developed by Britain but was never fully developed and all work on it was cancelled in the 1950's Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. When Mrs Strange died some years ago, her extensive slide collection was sorted through and those relevant to Ballarat were gifted to the Ballarat Library.millitary, raaf, r.a.a.f, wags, parade, ballarat, missile, red dean
